Hi Bonnie - I did use a walking foot and the edge of that foot as the guide for each row. It went VERY slow at the beginning and then a bit fast as the circle got bigger. Here is a link to the tutorial I adapted a bit:

The whole project is beautiful. I am impressed on your persistence in doing the circles, but they came out amazing!
