I did this same layout for my great-neices baby quilt - I made a temple of a half circle and quilted from center out to the corner of each log cabin so that it made it look like a pinwheel! It came out beautiful and is well loved!

At first glance, I saw a pinwheel.

So, maybe just go ahead and finish it. Call it something related to pinwheels (maybe) and consider it done.

Yes, the butterflies can go in lots of places, just applique them around to catch the eye.
Unfortunately, lots of us older folks (I'm 77) will instantly identify that most hated of all symbols from WW2.

But in the long run, it's YOUR quilt and if the one it's being made for likes it, then go on and quilt it. It's not going to go on display in a public place, is it? It should keep someone warm at home, made with love. And it'll become a family heirloom, treasured because you made it with love.

I think your husband is on the money. You did a beautiful job with this and I agree that you should quilt it "as is".

Thank you all for your comments.... I am going to finish it as is and be happy with it. I am sure the quilting I do will draw the eye to that and not the blades. I too shall think of it as a windmill and will tell my DD that is what it is... :)

Me too. And I showed my DH, and he doesn't see swastikas either. It is a pretty quilt. I'd say go with your plan

I see a water wheel, I'd just go with quilting it, it will be a pretty quilt.
