Sunflowers for the Sunshine of my Life
Several years ago I started collecting fabric to make a sunflower quilt for my daughter using a dresden plate as the sunflower. I had originally planned just squares with sashing but along the way I saw a quilt here on Quilting Board posted by roolen using a pattern from Judy Martin's Extraordinary Log Cabin Quilts book. Because of my change in plans, I ended up short on the backing fabric so added a border to the back which in the end I love the look. My husband picked out the backing fabric of the sunflowers.
The original pattern featured a pieced star where I put the dresden plate. I noticed that the pieced star block was 12" finished which was the perfect size for the dresden plate. There are over 60 different fabrics used in the front of the quilt, many were scraps left over from other projects.
I quilted it on my Janome 6900 using a walking foot. It was quite an aerobic workout pivoting the quilt around and pulling it through the harp area to sew in different directions. I used Warm and Natural for batting and have washed it so it has that comfy crinkly look.
