I will be quilting this by stitching in the ditch of the black sashing - then in the center square of each block. Then stitching in the ditch around the borders. Don't know about the 5 inch black border - whether I need any more quilting there. What do YOU think?

i'd suggest simple diagonal crosshatch for the border ... to carry over the "theme" and flow of the triangles.

that's a really nice quilt. i have triangle point envy. :P

If it were me Rainbow, I'd do some quilting in that 5" border. That seems to be a pretty large area to leave blank. There are a lot of pretty border patterns out there and that would be a fabulous place to show off some of your quilting, whether you're doing it all on the machine or mixing it up with some hand quilting! If you want to machine quilt the whole thing, you could do some simple free-form leaf motifs along the border. Those are fairly easy and quite showy. :) Or just sew straight lines on a 45 degree diagonal (maybe 2" apart?) going out in either direction from the center out to the corners. It wouldn't have to be anything too complicated since you're doing a sitd in the center of the quilt. :)

2 inch border hatching sounds GREAT. Worried about leaving so much unquilted with the black area.

    THANKS TO ALL !!!

Love the sashing - it sets off those gorgeous blocks perfectly.

The quilt is almost complete....border and then binding.... I/we (my husband and I) are really pleased with it... but I have this final (??) question.

Should I sew the border in black thread all the way up to the outside edge of the sashing border....or just in the black border area??? This is only my second border that I have made and do not know the "rules" for this..... I know, I know....whatever floats my boat, but remember, this "boat" will be going to someone else.

The bottom border comes from the point of the sashing to the point of the quilt....the top border goes across the point side-to-side.... All border lines are either lined up with the half-squares or the center of the sashing. The sashing is sewn stitching in the ditch. The black border has stitching next to the burgandy border....

Any help/suggestions would be appreciated. Again....Should I sew the border in black thread all the way up to the outside edge of the sashing border....or just in the black border area???

    Dunning quilt with border question.

That's a good question Rainbow! And a tough one to call. If I were doing it I'd lay some of the black thread across the whole area (along the marked lines) that you're wanting to quilt and see if you can't get some idea what it will look like. You won't have that density of thread of course, but it might give you some idea how it will look when it crosses to the contrasting colors. I like it when my stitches show, so I'd probably just use the black thread. But another option would be to use a muted charcoal gray thread. It's more neutral and might work better on the combined colors. Try that and see how you feel about it. I've taken tops into the store with me and laid the threads across my work to audition them. No one's ever minded my doing that. I don't unwrap much though, just a few inches.

Rainbow, love the quilt but sure don't envy your knees and back!
The best $80.00 I ever spent was on 2 -6ft banquet tables. still have to move it from side to side but and still has some bending over but nothing as painful as the one and only I did on the floor.

BTW great job on those points!
