    Vintage Applique Butterfly Quilt

Last year I acquired a vintage applique butterfly quilt top. Each butterfly is made from a different fabric, and they are all interesting prints. The background of each block is made from a sugar sack, with faded printing still visible on some of them. I added a border, and Mom quilted it (with a little quilting done by me and other family members). We chose a batting that didn't require close quilting, so that we could make good progress on it while I was visiting her last winter.

We made our summer trip to Mom's in ND last week and put on the binding. We had so much fun doing this quilt, and it is now on the queen sized bed in our guest room. It will be treasured!

Wow! Imagine all the hands that have worked on this quilt and love that everyone put in to it. The butterflies are so pretty and iconic. I wish I had saved this top: It reminds me so much of my mom and Ma-ma (her mother).

That's a delightful quilt! It's so nice that you were all able to work on it together. That will add to its charm.

So pretty and a bonus that you worked on it with your mom. Butterflies are beautiful and so is the quilt.

there's something about an old quilt! yours is beautful, and i hope you had everyone sign it! what a great family piece! i am cuddled up in an unfinished summer quilt that my grandmother made but didn't finish. it's scent reminds me of childhood summer mornings waking up in the big iron bed under the eaves. one of my favorite places on earth! guess i'd better finish this quilt if i'm going to use it. nut then the scent will vanish. what to do.?

I just love this quilt. Thanks for posting the pictures. I have been collecting 30s repro fabrics with a similar quilt top in mind. Thanks for the inspiration.

Nancia. I bet if you just remember your time under the eaves and how you felt, the scent will come back in your memory. BrendaK
