I make messes all the time! I get an inspiration and I pull enormous amounts of fabric out of the these nice neat drawers. And when I figure out what I really want to use - I put most of it away again. This method of storage was an absolute necessity 15 years ago when I left my husband and started on my refugee year. I needed to continue my passion in a portable way. Drawers work well.
