Variegated threads are my favorite!! I tend to make quilts with lots of fabrics and a mix of colors in them and a variegated seem to work so well with most of what I do.
Meander in a stipple sort of way? I could just do some wavy stitch diagonally, but I always do that cause it's easy and fast. I need to work on my "quilting" skills, but I don't want to ruin it!!!

Gayle, thank you for posting your pictures, it is a beauty...those fabrics really are something else :D
Heres a couple of quilting patterns that I downloaded, the rose motif could be continual, after finishing the last external petal, simply create a vine effect away to the next area you want a rose, you could also add the odd leave in between I think, I practiced this one and it's quite good to do :D

You could do something like this: http://www.patternman.com/shop/item.aspx?itemid=768 This pattern looks more sophisticated than kindergarden drawings, but it's freeform enough that the quilting doesn't have to be perfect.
