I am making my granddaughter a quilt -the top is done - she does not want it thick - is it alright to just put a backing on it without backing???

Can you clarify your question? Are you wanting a backing or no backing?

Batting comes in various weights, you can even take a 4oz batt and split it in half for a 2 oz. I would stick with poly batt if you are going to try that. You could have a top and back it with fleece for a cozy but still lighter quilt (no batting). You could us flannel as a filler or some folks have been using poly-felt if you want a little weight but still really thing. Really it is all up to you and what you want to do.

thank you all for the input !

I have made light quilts with no batting and just flannel or fleece on the back. They are not too thick and not heavy, but do give some warmth.

If I don't want my quilt to be too heavey and my Charity quilts that I make I use Fleece as a backing. NO batting just fleece. Is soft and just heavey enough. Seems my family Like the fleece backing. They are warm too without the heavey feeling

You could use flannel or muslin. Or nothing inside.

I would use flannel as batting it is still light weight yet gives it a nice drape.

Yes, you certainly can do a backing with no batting. I actually have a lovely vintage one done like that; and it was originally called a "summer quilt" the owner's granddaughter told me.
