We are seven months into our fabric moratorium BUT anyone can join at any time :) The official end of the moratorium is 1 November 2011. That’s only 4 months away. (The end is in sight).

Here’s a quick summary of the guidelines/rules:
• no fabric purchases to start a new quilt top (till 1 November 2011)

“Allowed” purchases include any item required to finish an existing project (either WIP or UFO), including but not limited to:
• batting
• backing or binding fabric
• fabric (if nothing in your stash will work)
• thread or notions
• fabric purchased on a plan prior to 1 December 2010 (e.g. block of the month)

So why are we doing this – the reasons are as varied as there are people involved. Some of those reasons include:
• de-stashing
• focus on finishing WIPs
• financial constraints

Want to bend the guidelines/rules a little? Sure – go for it. Some have chosen to:
• commit for a shorter period of time
• buy fabric if a really good sale comes along
• setting a budget for how much they will spend each month
• use 1 fabric from their stash each month
• purchase new fabric for volunteer projects

Cheers

I've been good for the last month :)

But... I made a really radical decision and to be honest I really don't know how I am going to cope.... What I did was cut up all my credit cards and close the accounts. Eventually I will get a debit card (kind of like a credit card but money is already in the account). That is a long way off...

So - no new purchases for me for a LOOONNNGGGGG time :(

I closed out my credit cards 2 years ago...and later found out that doing that drops your credit score...I didn't know that before hand or I just would have paid them down to zero and not used them.

Anyways, glad I know longer have them...even if the credit score dropped. I use my bank debit and paypal debit card for everything and don't have any problems when I travel or make purchases on-line. And like you said, the nice thing is knowing that you already have the money to pay for it.

Good luck.

I'm hanging in there, also. I had a weak moment at the LQS a week ago and bought 1 yard of fabric to finish a quilt top that I was working on. I have some that would work, but!!!!!!

Still keeping the moritorium in my mind. I have not bought any yardages at all. I bought a jelly roll and charms a few weeks ago when I met another NE quilter at quilted threads in NH. But it is set aside for my DH to give me for my b'day this month. I also have gone to Salv. army to get a few remnants . I traded charms with a QB member for an I spy quilt. So far I have made5 I spys, and 2 more to go. Cutting scraps to make yoyos. Do not know what Ill do with them.

I feel great not spending mucho $ on fabric..I still look...butdo not buy. All that new fabric is so expensive.
I will probably continue on this trend all the time. I love fabric it is a shame not to use it.

I have only allowed myself the 4 Bs since before Christmas 2010...Backing, Batting, Border, Background. I haven't added to the stash, yet!
D

My goal for 2011 is to use up as much stash as I can.

My only purchase last month was batting. The pieces I had left could only be used for very small wall quilts or table toppers. I made a window quilt for my mom and have finished 2 of the 4 table toppers/runners I am making for my 4 adult children. (Forgot to take pics. Will post when I get pics.) That has used up what batting I had. The last 2 the batting will have to be pieced. Everything I made this month came out of my stash or was a UFO/WIP. didn't even need to buy backing. YEAH!!!!
I am determined to keep the quilting needs confined to the sewing room. That way there is only one room that gets messy when I am in create mode.

I put mine in a drawer and don't carry them. No temptation.
