I received an email from a prosecuting attorney looking for homes for dogs that have been retired from over in Afghanistan & Iraq that 2 of our Air Force members are bringing over. In the e-mail, he said that most of the dogs that are being retired after saving human lives are being euthanized because it's cheaper then sending them back here to find new homes!
My husband is callilng our local politicians in PA: Mr. Toomey & Mr. Shuster to try & right this wrong. He is also calling the American Legion & other Vet Support Organizations. We want to raise awareness & ask everyone to contact their politicians. These dogs deserve to live out the rest of their lives in a loving home!

You should start an online petition. Can't find the website that sends me occasional petitions to sign, but I know there are several.

Wow I'm surprised to read this since many stories come out on the news about Vets that bring these dogs back home with them and keep them.

I agree that these dogs serve just like we did or do and should have a good home to go to after the war.

You are so right.

Most of our retired Soldiers don't get the honor they deserve, why would they care about dogs.

Anyone or anything who serves or served our country should be honored for it, not just be forgotten and put away or euthanized.

i know this will not be popular but i have to say it. Starving babies, Homeless vets or save a dog. I dont know what one would i pick ??

Unfortunately many of these dogs suffer from PTSD as do their comrades in service. I suspect that they would be hard to place for adoption but that doesn't make them any less deserving. It may be a liability issue on the part of the armed services. We saw something on the national news about returning service dogs not long ago and the efforts being made to try to deprogram them. Unfortunately the outlook wasn't very good. Ann in TN

They aren't mutually exclusive though. This particular issue is service dogs being killed. When there's a thread on starving babies on mars or something we'll get right on it. There apparently isn't an agency to help these dogs like there is for returning homeless vets. Gees!

I don't know if this is totally true. Lucy, a dog that is traveling around to visit servicemembers came to my base today and she is awesome. She's a chocolate lab mix that loved playing catch with us. I will ask her handler, a veterinarian if she knows of this. There is a company that ships pets back to the states and I assisted my friend in sending his company's mascot Siggy (real name Signal) back to his parents house. Rabbies is really bad here. We had a member die after getting bitten so the chances of some of these dogs catching rabies is good here. There could be several reasons why the dogs are getting put to sleep but the cost of sending them back to the states is generally not a reason because they are on orders just like we are.
