Quilt Pattern Question

2 Attachment(s)
Hello,

I've been seeing more and more of these equilateral triangle quilts and was wondering if there was a pattern name or a tutorial for it. I would like to try making one. Also, what would be the difficulty level? I am a beginner quilter and have only worked with squares and rectangle cuts so far :) Thanks!

There are many quilt patterns made from equilateral triangles. A good source for looking at patterns is www.quilterscache. One that comes to mind is Thousands of Pyramids. There are a lot of examples on this board under OBW or One Block Wondrs that are equilateral triangles. There are acrylic 60º rulers that you can buy to use with your roary cutter to do perfect triangles. The one thing to be careful of is sewing the bias edges as they can stretch. Starch your fabric well before cutting and sew carefully.

I Love your picture of your quilt!! :D This is also something that I haven't tried yet, so I can't help you with the level of experience. I am sure there will be several quilters here that can help you out. Good Luck!!

I have not done one yet with only triangles - here is a link to the one I did.

It was tedious but not difficult. It actually was my first quilt I did after not quilting for 25 years!!

Bonnie Hunter has a free pattern on her website for Thousand Pyramids. She sews them together in a "different" way that makes them very easy. I am an experienced quilter but have been intimidated by this quilt. Since seeing her directions it on my "short" list to do. Hope it helps.

I have not tried this either but I love the one in your photo! Maybe you could try a doll/small size first to see if you like it....just a thought.

It looks like something that wouldn't be too complex, but I haven't made one myself. Good Luck.

I don't believe that would be very hard to do but I haven't done one.

the only 'problem' i see is that you'd be working with a lot of bias edges. press, don't iron, the pieces with starch to help stabilize them.

They're not hard at all and go together quite easily. Cut your triangles so the base is always on the straight of grain, then sew the rows so the bases are on the outside edges. Your finished rows will not stretch if you do that. Also be sure to press the seams of each row all in the same direction and alternate the direction in every other row. That will spin the seams where the points meet up as you join the rows. Take your time with the cutting because accuracy is really important with these layouts.

Here's mine. It's a strip pieced thousand pyramid layout of my own design (and a Hoffman Challenge finalist in 2009).
