Shirley Temple curls

I am in my 80's and was wondering if any of our older quilters remember their mothers wrapping their hair in rags for Shirley Temple curls. I have googled it, but I remember my mother twirling the hair vertically on the rag not what was shown on google. Any ideas???....grandchildren would like me to fancy them up for Christmas. Thanx

My mother used to do my hair that way. We called them "long curls" I have slept many of nights with those pink sponge "rollers" in my long blond hair. Today you can do it with a small curling iron, but it takes forever to do and doesn't stay in as long. Just pull the sections out to the side and wrap the curler and let dry. Mom used to comb them around her finger like a spring. :) Have fun, sounds like you will.....

I remember kind of doing a pig tail wrap around the rag then bringing the end up to the beginning and securing. Does this make any sense? It's been a LONG time ago! Good luck!
Merry Christmas.

My Grandmother would wrap the hair around the rag with a tail left over and would wrap the tail around the curl and then tye it to the end I was holding on top of my head.

I remember mom fixing my sisters hair with the rag curls, but she never did mine that way because my hair did the curls that way naturally.

It was somewhat different for me. I always had naturally curly hair and my Mother woud take a section and brush it around her finger and it would make long curls. Sounds really simple doesn't it? Well, I remember my hair sessions every morning to be very trying and I would usually complain and cry. But to this day, I am very thankful that my hair is curly.

My mother did my older sisters hair that way. Thank goodness my hair refused to curl. If I remember correctly, she dampened the section of hair and used the rag/cloth like a roll curler. She wrapped the hair around the rag ( in the center)and when the section was all wound up, she tied the 2 ends of the cloth into a loose knot. Forgot to add she did it the night before so the hair dryed that way by Sunday morning.

I used the pink foam rollers and got the look - but can be uncomfortable for sleeping :) my friends mom used the rags make them long enough to be able to know - don't wind them too tight - have fun

I always had long curls when I was small and Mom used rags curlers too but I have no idea how to do it.

My mom would wrap my hair in those pink foam curlers - then I would sleep in them - not very comfortable - then my hair would be curly or frizzy - curling iron is so much easier.
