I'm a little sad
 

I see so many talented ladies and so many gorgeous quilts on here and yet it doesn't seem that a lot of people appreciate how much work and money goes into the quilts. This includes the quilters themselves, seems that we are always undervaluing our hard work and effort. Makes me a bit sad.

don't be sad. the joy is in the quilting.

Those who do not quilt have no idea of the money ,time and effort that goes into a quilt. Those of us that quilt usually do it for the love of the craft and self satisfaction of our work. I never sell my quilts, I gift them to those who want them. So far all that I have given away have been loved and taken very good care of.

Ah, cheers up...the experience of creating a thing of beauty is its own reward. I appreciate your sentiments and totally agree, the craft came from need to what we know it today, a very expensive hobby. Fortunate are those who can receive financial gain from it. Another aspect is, we are helping to keep the craft alive. What are others ideas on promoting the art and expense of the cottage industry of quilt making?

Yes is is sad but loving to do it makes it all worth while!

We do it because we love it ! Nothing sad about that!

I am not going to let something I am so passionate about make me sad. If it comes to that I will know it is time to finda new hobby. I am very new to quilting and do not see myself selling any quilts in the near future. Right now I am sharing with my family and they certainly seem very appreciative of what I am doing. I do it for enjoyment - sure hope I can afford it for a while to come. I am hoping to build a hefty stash before I retire.

You're correct that non-quilters don't appreciate the amount of work and talent that goes into a project, but our fellow quilters certainly do. I've always wished that I could be an artist - I can see something and think I could paint that, but what comes out of my fingers is not what I'm seeing in my head. With quilting, I can express myself artistically and what I see in my head actually comes off my sewing machine. How rewarding is that!

I changed my view of how non quilters react to my quilts. I was given a gift by an artist friend of one her paintings. The painting was excellent but I did not like the subject of the painting at all. I appreciate the thought and effort and I know for her it was a very personal gift to give. Every time I see the painting I feel bad because I don't like it. I think of this painting when I think about giving a quilting item as a gift.

I just had this discussion with another lady the other day. And you are right, alot of people don't realize the time, effort and money that goes into a craft, be it quilting, rug making, knitting or painting.

Sometimes you get lucky and get the appreciation of someone who realizes what goes into your craft and doesn't argue about the price!
