flannel quilts
 

I'm making a flannel quilt. Flannel squares on top and flannel for backing. I might use thin batting inside. Do you think that is the right thing to do or will it be too hot and heavy?

I use cotton batting and love the weight of it.

Too hot and heavy depends on where you live and how warm you keep your house. I live in western Washington with cool wet winters and slightly less cool and wet summers. We keep our house heated in the low 60s during the cooler months so here I think it would be just about right. I'm in the process of gathering old men's flannel shirts for a quilt and I plan to make it like you describe. If you heat your house into the mid or high 70s, or live in a warmer climate, it could be on the warm side.

I make quilts with flannel tops and backs. I use poly batting because I like the loft. Not too heavy for me at all, but I live in Missouri--not sure if it would be too warm for the south.

I have a nice cuddly quilt with flannel front and back and cotton batting, I LOVE it!

Is it a rag quilt? I use 3 layers of flannel in my rag quilts. That means more fabric to rag, and also I don't have to sew those x's through the blocks to keep the batting from shifting.

I like using a single layer of flannel as the batting. It's incredibly soft and "supple" ... absolutely no stiffness to it. And since it's a woven fabric you don't have to quilt it densely.

Note that you don't see the quilting much, this might be a bonus :)

Depends on where it's headed. I'd take batting in mine, but it gets cold ehre.

I made one just like that & it was just right - even for Southern CA.
