Borders!

I have a quilt top measuring 50x60.25, I need to enlarge it to be 60"x80", can my side and top borders be different widths or should I ask how do I make it look balanced.
Thanks.

They can be different or you can add a narrow border all the way around and then perhaps a row of blocks or piano keys top and bottom and a final equal size border. Audition a few options and see which you like best.

your borders can be any size you want them to be- often they are not the same- sometimes we want more length, sometimes more width is needed- you can create borders with a number of smaller strips or you can use one fabric to make the borders- and you can make them what ever size you need them to be. ;)

If you don't make the borders the same, don't let the quilt police see it. LOL
I just finished a quilt that I added borders only to the top and bottom to make it the finished size I wanted. Looks good.

I would suggest making some 5" finished blocks that would coordinate with the existing top. Add them as an inside border on the top and bottom of the quilt. That would add the extra 10" to the height of the quilt. Then you can add your outside border to all four sides.

I've added extra borders at the ends to turn a square into a rectangle. Nobody has complained. ;)

You could also add a border to just one side and one end. That can be a neat look also!

Or you could modify a block so that it is a rectangle and add that for a border all the way around. If it was 5 inches wide and ten inches tall it would make your quilt the right size and still look balanced. But seriously, any quilt you are happy with the look of is the right way to go. I probably wouldn't add different sized borders because I'm OCD like that, but if you like how it turns out, great!

sometimes i make a small border top and bottom ---then a row of blocks that match the quilt top and bottom ---then put another border all the way around ...adds a little more interest -- than just a large chunk of border

You can do anything you want.. its YOUR quilt..
if you like different size borders GO FOR IT !!
If you want multiple borders to make the size you want GO FOR IT !!
If you want to make a coordinating 'row' to make it linger then GO FOR IT !!

there is no wrong way on your quilt..
