Empty thread spools
I'm not a hoarder. In fact, I'm usually very good at getting rid of things that I no longer need.
However, I just cannot make myself throw away my empty Gutermann thread spools. I have dozens of the empty spools. Any suggestions of what I could use them for? |
I've been saving empty spools for years -- just to see how many spools of thread I use in my sewing lifetime. Have no purpose for them and I know when it is time to empty my sewing room they will all end up in the garbage but right now they are considered a decoration in my sewing room. Even my grandkids know what to do with the empty spool!

SPool dolls, toys. Little pin cushions.

A friend once asked me for my old spools, she strung them together for her cats.

Hmmmm...... A string of them for the Christmas tree? Or turn them into ornaments by adding pipe cleaner arms and legs, a pom pom head, and some felt clothing?

I'll start saving them...just threw 2 away...will get them out of waste basket...lol

Funny you should mention that. I was throwing one away the other day and I remembered when I was little using the wooden cotton reels for french knitting. Dad put four nails into the top and then wool was wound around the nails and I would use a hair pin to pick up the stitches. It was always fun to watch the knitting coming out of the other end. I do not remember actually making anything just doing french knitting.
I was thinking as I was throwing the one away that it would be too thin and fragile - plastic - to put nails into. |
Go to Pinterest and type in thread spools. There are some great ideas there.

Last year, I sent mine to school with the neighbor kids - their teacher is going to use these in an art project of some kind.

I wrap my pearl cotton on spools for when I tie my jean quilts
