What the heck were these meant to be?
 

I bought these pieces, 17 of them, at an estate sale months ago. Just dug them out and they were totally nasty, stored in a garage for decades. I washed them in Borax and pressed them, and this is what I got. They are all the same shape, narrowly hemmed on 3 sides by hand. What were they supposed to be? Please dont tell me these were Sunbonnet Sue dresses.... YUCK. I will not be making a sunbonnet sue quilt. Worse come to worse I can cut as big a triangle from them and do whatever I want with them. But first I wanted to float the question in case someone recognizes the shape and can tell me what quilt they were cut for. (I'm afraid it might be Sunbonnet Sue... :hunf: ).

I love the fabrics. Some are feedsacks but some also look like late 50's, early 60's, so that's probably when these were cut. I want to make some sort of small wall hanging just to be able to look at the prints.

Looks like Sunbonnet Sue to me also. You could re-cut them into wedges and do a grandmother's fan.

I hate to be the second bearer of bad news, but I'm pretty sure those are SBS dresses. That's why they are only hemmed on three sides, and the notch in the top is where her elbow covers that area. Doesn't mean that's what you have to do with them. You could overlap them, arranging them them into a circle and applique a center over all. Maybe you could overlap them into an "S" shape. Play with them.

I suppose you can arrange them sort of like a Dresden plate or a fan, or flower petals. Doesn't matter that the shapes are not symmetrical. Make 3 groupings of six. Find a fabric to cover the notched centers. Then appliqué the 3 units onto a white background. The units don't have to be lined up vertically or horizontally, just some kind of artful and modern way.

Sue dresses. But you could be politically correct and put Sam in them.

If you don't want to do SBS -

they kind of made me think of bell-type flowers or desk lamp shades.

Yes, they look like Sunbonnet Sue dresses. But the Sunbonnet Sue quilt I made had much prettier dresses:) They flowed:)
