Summer quilt

My grandson wants a very light quilt. So I was thinking about a summer quilt ,but I don't know what to put in middle and how to get it ready to quilt

you can use pellon or just use a light material for the backing and do not add any middle

i've seen them with just cotton fabric on the back and no batting. your quilting will not have as much definition this way, though

Quilters Dream Request is a thin batting that is great for a light summer quilt.

I have doubled flannel for a light weight quilt, worked fine and still gave a little weight to the quilt.

I live in Dallas, where we have very hot summers & very little cold weather. I second the Quilters Dream batting. One thing that helps make a quilt light is fewer piecing seams. Don't pick a pattern with a million little pieces & tons of seams.

I would at least use a cotton fabric for the batting. But it depends on his definition of 'light'.
Personally, I like the Hobbs 80/20 for most everything.

Not sure how old your grandson is, but if he's at least 3 years old, I'd suggest wool batting (I love Hobb's Heirloom wool -- it's very lightweight & washes great). Wool is wonderful because it breathes, so it's warm in the winter & cool in the summer. I love heavy cotton quilts, but they are just too hot come summertime, so I switch to wool.

I did not use any batting in a table topper and it was very hard to hold onto while quilting it.

My friend made a Quilt for a Picnic Table cloth using flannel in place of batting. It worked perfectly and was very light weight.
