What Can Be Done?
 

A lady in our town contacted me and wanted to donate a sewing machine and other quilting supplies to our guild. A friend and I went to her house to see what she had. The sewing machine is a Janome Memory Craft 6600 which I understand is a very good machine. But -- the former owner of this machine was a very heavy smoker and even though I have left the machine outside on my patio for 3 days it still smells like smoke. I am not sure it's worth messing with if I can't get rid of the smell. Also, there is no foot pedal. I see it has a start/stop button so it could be used without a foot pedal. I did find a pedal online but it was $70. I can't stand the smell long enough to even mess with seeing if it works or not. Is there anything that can be done to get rid of the smoke smell in a sewing machine. Any help would be sincerely appreciated.

Have you tried a plastic bag with box of arm n hammer baking soda

I would call a sewing machine repair shop and ask their opinion.

Try placing the machine in a large Rubbermaid tub or box and place a bowl of white vinegar inside. Close it up for and replace the vinegar every other day until the smell is gone.

I used this vinegar trick to get rid of a really bad odor that was left in the back of my truck. I have a canopy shell and a Bedrug while transporting Chili Palmer (my dog) back home after living with my sons for a while. She smelled really bad after sharing a backyard with two male dogs.

I closed up the windows in the canopy and placed a quart sized bowl of vinegar in the back and changed it every other day for a week and the smell vanished.

Our son used this trick to get rid of old dog odors in his newly purchased house. After having a professional cleaning crew come in, shampooing carpets his house still had an odor. This got rid of it.

I just read where charcoal is also good for eliminating odors. Hope you find a solution.

Phew, what a problem.....a silly question...have you plugged in and started the machine to make sure the burnt smell isn't electronic. I know they are not the same but still......Or wipe all the hard parts with vinegar-water solution dampened cloth. In a stand or case? Separate the machine from them.

My husband put a burning carton of eggs in our refrigerator (no lie) and nothing would take the odor out, not even professionals.
He bought an ozone generator on Amazon and that thing took out the odor. Absolutely cannot tell anything ever happened.
We thought our fridge was ruined.

Great machine to get ... but not so great if it is unbearable!

First of all ... is there a smoker in your guild who would adopt the machine?
Or at least could give it a test drive or six, to ensure it is worth fussing with?


Agree with the others ... contact a local sewing machine repair shop and ask for their advice.

Be careful ... that anything you "try" does not damage your machine in other ways.

I would fear the smell is embedded in the plastic and your efforts may be futile.

I would try charcoal in the bag
