Facing a quilt

My quilt group was introduced to facing a quilt instead of binding. I looked it up online. Does anyone have experience with this way of binding a quilt?

One of my guilds has an opportunity quilt finished this way. The quilt uses a border print for the last border and this was the perfect way to finish the edge without losing any of the border print. And it lays really flat.

I have faced a few quilts. Just last Thursday, I had a friend tell me that she cuts away the batting only after sewing on the binding to avoid a slight bulge when turning the facing back. I am going to give that a try next time. I like to sew a line around the edge after turning to keep the facing to the back. But it can give you a wave.

I cannot think of any reason why it would not be a great finish in lots of applications. For instance, I think it would be especially good for scallops or other non-straignt line edges. Typical binding is hand stitched on the back; so, why not a facing. I would turn the outside edge of the facing under 1/4 inch and press or stitch in order to be able to finish the back so it is hidden.

I use it when I want to finish an edge that is not straight like Grandmother’s Flower Garden hexagon edge.

There is an excellent video by Joe Cunningham on facing quilts on youtube.

With my art quilts, I prefer to do facing rather than binding. Google search:

Facing vs Binding video by Debby Cresanto

Very easy and I am happy with the results.
