Sewing with shelf liner ?
I'm thinking of making some pads that go on a high chair table top and want to put fabric on the top and that rubber shelf liner on the back so they don't slip off. It will be sort of like a place mat for baby. I don't have a pattern & this will just be a try to see if it can even be done. I tried sewing with that shelf liner & it doesn't slid very well at all on my sewing bed when I'm stitching with it. I've tried it with the liner lying down on the machine bed & have tried it facing up next to the presser foot. Either way I have to really pull it from the back to get it to sew.
Has anyone ever used this stuff & if so, how did you get it to slide easily on the bed of the machine while you are sewing it? Hope this make sense! |
I might try waxed paper between it and the machine bed. You can sew through it and tear it away when you are done.

Try a layer of tissue paper. Easy to tear off. There is also a Teflon foot that might work.

Tissue paper underneath the shelf liner should work. I have used it under vinyl and it worked very well.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! What a easy & simple solution to my problem. I'm off to try a sample right now!

My go to would be parchment paper.
It will have the slipperyness that you want ... but will stand up better than the tissue and waxed paper. Because of the shelf liner, you probably will want to change up your needle. I'd try a Jeans needle. Good Luck! |
O.K., I went with the waxed paper (before I saw the post from QuiltE...:)) and it worked beautifully! It was easy to sew through & easy to peel off and I had it in the pantry. I did use a Jeans needle for sewing. Thanks!!!

Interesting idea. I have not actually run it through my sewing maching, but it should work. I'd change your needle at the beginning and end of the project. Also, if you have a vinyl or roller foot you could try that.

I used shelf liner as the inside of a coffee cup wrap to keep it from sliding down the cup. I sewed with the fabric on bottom, liner on top. No problems at all.

I made a stack of these jar lid openers this year, and used the walking foot with no problem. (I see you already solved the situation with wax paper) https://happiestcamper.com/jar-opene...ewing-project/
