New to vintage nachines

Hi everyone, I just purchased my first sewing machine. I came across a vintage kenmore 158.960 and was amazed by its shape and quality. The only problem is it didn't include buttonhole attachements. Do you guys know which models are compatible? I've read somewhere that the cover plates can be different sizes.

Welcome to Quilting Board. There is a section specifically for For Vintage & Antique Machine Enthusiasts at https://www.quiltingboard.com/vintag...thusiasts-f22/ I couldn't find anyone on QB with the "Kenmore 96"

I did find a manual for many machines that includes the 96 at https://www.manualslib.com/manual/55...tml#product-96 and it does not use the buttonhole plate. It uses a buttonhole foot as shown at https://www.manualslib.com/manual/55...page=21#manual

We like pictures. In order to post pictures on Quilting Board, you will probably need to reduce or compress the picture to a file size that is smaller than 2MB. How to post images can be found at https://www.quiltingboard.com/attach...020-01-17-.pdf
Don't forget to scroll over to the far right to find and click on the "Upload" button.

I have found that only the big red "Reply" button or "Quote" work to give me the paper clip icon to work for adding pictures.

Some additional info regarding reducing images at post #4 and images for the scroll and upload button can be found at #5 of https://www.quiltingboard.com/main-f...d-t312607.html

Another way to post pictures can be found at https://www.quiltingboard.com/showpo...postcount=1143
And how to use an ipad to post pictures can be found at https://www.quiltingboard.com/qb-hel...s-t318147.html

Or simply - Make sure pictures are smaller than 2MB
Click on red "Reply" button
Click on the paper clip icon
Click browse - choose picture/s. (only 5 allowed per post)
Once they show up as being loaded, Scroll over to the right side and click on "Upload"
After the pictures show up as being attached, you can close that window and go back to the screen to finish posting your post.

thanks for the link. On page 23 it does say you need a buttonhole plate for 96. My machine doesn't have the appropiate buttons to make a buttonhole.

Sorry, I miss read the 95 as a 96. I should know better ;) I don't remember seeing the one for your machine. I have a couple of buttonhole plates, but have never used them, as I prefer the Singer ones that I have used for years.

I gather that you have seen https://tumorfarmer.blogspot.com/202...olers-and.html
I went looking at the geared plates that I have. Unfortunately, two of them had no identifying numbers on them. I found another that did have a number 36205 and it was the same size as the ones that did not have a number. The tab looks to be the narrower ones measuring approximately 1 1/8" and looks like it is the same size as the one installed but doesn't fit https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-W4iECPAay...603_171916.jpg

I did find the parts list for the 158960 at https://www.searspartsdirect.com/mod...earchScope=ALL You can scroll over to see the parts break down of the different sections, including attachments. There is a buttonhole attachment that says it is for the 96 at https://www.ebay.com/itm/14452906566...evt=1&mkcid=28

Thanks for the help! I didn't buy the ebay listing as it was over 40 dollars with shipping. I actually asked a bunch of ebay sellers for dimensions of the plate. Turns out the kenmore 1752 plate fits the 96. I was able to find a really good deal on that item.
