Singer 201-2
 

Hi All, I just picked up this Singer 201-2 this past weekend. This machine was built in 1951 according to the serial number and does have the Centennial badge on it. It sews really nice and is in decent shape for the age. It also came with the zig zag and buttonhole attachments which I may never use, but you never know. I've wanted one of these for awhile and just wanted to share. I'm excited to use this for quilting which is why I purchased it (my Brother's throat space is very small). It also came with the cabinet, also in decent shape. I have played around with it, but my husband doesn't want me to use it too much until I can get it oiled (I just ordered some and waiting for it come in the mail). The cat really likes it too and wants to help me sew by eating the thread.

What a beautiful machine. Congratulations! I'm assuming that feed dogs don't drop ... how are you planning to quilt ? Stitch length to zero and some kind of covering for the feed dogs ? I really love that huge harp. Width and height are great.

I purchased a walking foot for the machine yesterday and a quarter in patchwork presser foot this morning. I don't do much FMQ so not having the feed dogs drop won't be an issue. I thought, though, I did see somewhere that they do drop, but it also may have been a different model (maybe the model 15). I was tossed up between the 15 and 201 when looking. The model 15 has a slightly smaller harp size. These old Singers have such a gorgeous design (looks and function), that I just had to have one.

It certainly looks in such nice condition. Where did you find it ?

The 201 is a great machine. I have one in the garage waiting for a place to put it. I serviced it when I bought it, and it purred like a kitten. Don't forget to fill the grease cups.

It was on Ebay with free local pick up so no shipping involved. It was about an hour's drive from where I live and not a horrendous drive other than a lot of construction on one part of the route of the interstate.

You have a Rolls Royce there! Congratulations! I have 2 awaiting cleaning and oiling. My husband just bought me a 201k hand crank, and I can't leave her alone!

My dilemma now is do I polish it or leave it as is. I am leaning towards leaving it since it shows that the machine was well loved and used. It is 72 years old on April 25th according to the serial number database.

I also found a receipt from 1957 in the box with the zig zag attachment, how cool is that? The zig zag attachment was purchased in Flint MI.

BTW, did you know that Singer gifted a 201 to Queen Elizabeth as a wedding gift?
