From "Never" to "Now"
 

years ago, when slotted rulers (for cutting several strips without having to move the ruler) appeared on the market I had no interest. "I'd never waste money on one of those." too flimsy; too slippery; if one cut is wrong they'll all be wrong; etc, etc

Slow forward to now ... I do have a studio cutter and dies for the strips i am most likely to need, but i don't have all of them. I also no longer have knees and hips that can hold me up for extended periods of time without a lot of moaning, groaning and whining. (seriously ... they complain like crazy.)

I did, however [and i suppose, foolishly] pick a project that requires a bazillion strips in a size for which I don't have a die.
sooooo ... after all these years i decided to gamble on one of those slotted rulers. (hey! some people gamble in vegas. I risk my nickles on new gadgets. I probably win a lot more often than i would at the slots.)

will wonders never cease? i found one the right size for my cutting mat and my budget. it's a lot sturdier than the first one on the market and it is more efficient. which leads me to wonder ... did i wait to long to get one? or luckily long enough?

another of life's little mysteries.

I have the big and small Stripology slotted rulers. I use them a lot and I have the Go cutter but like you not all the size strip dies.
I was given a June Taylor one and it is flimsy and moved a lot on the fabric causing me to ruin cuts. I used the Stripology one at a retreat and it was so much better.

I have two of these -- one has 1/2 inch slots, the other has 1/4. I think they are June taylor, I don't use them for cutting long strips, but I do use them for cutting those strips into sub pieces. I recently did a baby quilt and needed a lot of 1.5 x 2.5 and 1.5 x 2.0 and 1.5 x 1.5, so I cut WOF by 1.5 strips just with my ruler, then used the slotted tool to cut the smaller pieces. Speeds up the process quite a bit.
I have an accuquilt, but the only strip die I have is 2.5. Just can't bring myself to pay for additional dies!

same here. they were never inexpensive but i got a nosebleed the last time i looked at current prices.

I also have the Stripology cutting ruler and love it. If they ever come out with a 36" wide one with quarter inches, half inches, three fourth inches and one inch size all in one ruler I'm buying it. No matter the cost!

They'd have to go to a different material and greater ruler thickness.

A large strip cutting ruler is going to be very heavy. One with 1/4" width strips is going to be extremely "floppy"/unstable. There's no structure left to it when you make all those long slits.

That's why the smaller ones can have the narrower cutting widths and the larger ones must have wider cutting widths. It's physics/materials science.

How timely! I used another person's June Taylor slotted ruler at Singer Sewing Day when she spied me cutting 1 1/4" squares for a new pixel quilt. Game Changer! I came home and instructed Amazon to bring me one! I would like a larger one, so now that I know they are easy and time-saving, I will seek one! BTW, I did find it slippery, so I stabilized my 2 # weight.

MKC....oh I know that! Different thickness and all....but please allow a girl to dream once in a while.

I bought one years ago but you had to fold it up so many times to fit under the ruler and yes, it was flimsy to the point I snapped one corner of it but I taped it and it worked just fine for me until I ordered the larger one I think last year. I gave the damaged one to a friend. I'm very happy with the larger one but you still have to be careful with them as I sliced right thru the side of my index finger late one night. Rule #1, don't cut when you're tired which I was doing so I paid the price for it. THought I'd never quit bleeding but finally I did. I don't have one of those cutter machines with dies, etc as I have no where to store it plus to me you waste a lot of fabric but that's just my thinking, what do I know? Anyway, I love my slotted ruler and use when ever I can to save me time and energy.
