Above is what I posted yesterday about my find. And here are the pics and the links I used to research for sure what it was. If I am wrong, please correct me. http://www.sandman-collectibles.com/...r-machines.htm Using this site, I decided it must be a model 66-16. But, I answered the questions without the machine in front of me, and with only what I could see on my camera, so may decide differently later when I have a chance to examine it more closely. http://www.singerco.com/support/model_number.html was used to determine it was one of Singer's earliest machines, and going by the serial number, it appears to be made in Elizabeth NJ USA in 1930. From what I can find, Featherweights were first made in 1933, and so this must be the cast iron (my hubby says it seems like it is) predecesor - the SewHandy? I can't remember where I got that info... Anyway, I think it is a great find, and whether it works or not (I haven't had time to play with it yet), it will be a beautiful addition to my quilting area. And a suprise hiding inside the cabinet...attachements! Register number helps identify the machine. Not sure what the motor number can do for me? Beautiful end or side plate, just needs a little cleaning. While walking down the street, I thought it was a vanity they were throwing away - til I saw the cord! Curious, I peeked inside to see what kind of machine... oh, gracious! Was it a Featherweight??!! Pulling it out, I found a beautiful machine, seems quite well cared for. |
Great find! We have a couple of nice pieces of furniture resuced from dumpsters in Lincoln years ago. I think Lincoln must have the nicest trash around!

How lovely a find! Just clean her up and try her out later. The cabinet can be refurbished too, I think! Congrats on the Dumpster find!

That is a totally awesome find!

Wow!!!! I can't believe someone would just throw that away. You know whoever owned it originally would just die if they knew, or turn over in their grave! What a great find. I must admit I'm experiencing a bit of quilter's envy at the moment.

Great Dumpster diving!!! We don't have dumpsters in our neighborhoods, but I have walked the neighborhood and gotten some great stuff.

Here is a great tip, if you live near a college town, go drive around campus just as the sudents are going home for the summer. My friend told me she picked up 6 sewing machines one day!
