Above is what I posted yesterday about my find. And here are the pics and the links I used to research for sure what it was. If I am wrong, please correct me.

http://www.sandman-collectibles.com/...r-machines.htm

Using this site, I decided it must be a model 66-16. But, I answered the questions without the machine in front of me, and with only what I could see on my camera, so may decide differently later when I have a chance to examine it more closely.

http://www.singerco.com/support/model_number.html was used to determine it was one of Singer's earliest machines, and going by the serial number, it appears to be made in Elizabeth NJ USA in 1930.

From what I can find, Featherweights were first made in 1933, and so this must be the cast iron (my hubby says it seems like it is) predecesor - the SewHandy? I can't remember where I got that info...

Anyway, I think it is a great find, and whether it works or not (I haven't had time to play with it yet), it will be a beautiful addition to my quilting area.

And a suprise hiding inside the cabinet...attachements!

Register number helps identify the machine.

Not sure what the motor number can do for me?

Beautiful end or side plate, just needs a little cleaning.

While walking down the street, I thought it was a vanity they were throwing away - til I saw the cord!

Curious, I peeked inside to see what kind of machine... oh, gracious! Was it a Featherweight??!!

Pulling it out, I found a beautiful machine, seems quite well cared for.

Great find! We have a couple of nice pieces of furniture resuced from dumpsters in Lincoln years ago. I think Lincoln must have the nicest trash around!

roseOfsharon 04-13-2010 08:45 AM

How lovely a find! Just clean her up and try her out later. The cabinet can be refurbished too, I think! Congrats on the Dumpster find!

CraftsByRobin 04-13-2010 08:50 AM

That is a totally awesome find!

Tiffany 04-13-2010 08:56 AM

Wow!!!! I can't believe someone would just throw that away. You know whoever owned it originally would just die if they knew, or turn over in their grave! What a great find. I must admit I'm experiencing a bit of quilter's envy at the moment.

sharon b 04-13-2010 09:16 AM

Great Dumpster diving!!! We don't have dumpsters in our neighborhoods, but I have walked the neighborhood and gotten some great stuff.

Here is a great tip, if you live near a college town, go drive around campus just as the sudents are going home for the summer. My friend told me she picked up 6 sewing machines one day!

Wow, that is amazing! I work at a college, and I can verify that everything imaginable is thrown away - it is easier than hauling cross country, or paying to ship it when the student flies!

sharon b 04-13-2010 09:27 AM

I live near Notre Dame and they no longer throw things away  The students leave it in the dorm room and after they all leave the college collects the items and then has a HUGE yard sale. Granted the money goes to charity, but now they even charge you to get in to look at the items

Cool idea. Surprising the money goes to charity - what with all the budget cuts schools seem to be taking lately. As long as it was in the housing contract "any left items will be forfeit" it should be good.

wow to die for

RedGarnet222 04-13-2010 10:00 AM

It's not a featherweight. But, it is a cool find and you will have some fun fixing her up and using her. there is a group on yahoo that is a board to ask questions about singers. If You want it let me know, I will search it out for you.

KGoodhand 04-13-2010 10:24 AM

Chasing Hawk 04-14-2010 07:42 PM

Nice find, some years back I found an antique settee frame behind a store. I asked if I could have it. I reupholstered it, and refinished it. Had it appraised (the set it at $1500.00). I gave it my sister as a Christmas gift.

cassie69emt 04-15-2010 03:36 AM

Looks just like teh one I have sitting in my living room, wait let em see if its still there or if hubby threw it out LOL

Quilter2B 04-15-2010 07:28 AM

Do you think the motor number might hold a clue as to when she was made? Like '56? I don't know for sure but it was just a thought :?:

Kara 04-15-2010 07:30 AM

What a find!!!
Looks like a beautiful machine!
Hope she works, or takes little repair to do so. And the cabinet will be beautiful with a little TLC, too
:D

iltoaz 04-15-2010 11:21 AM

That reminds me of a little coffee table a friend of mine gave me, and I gave it to my son. Someone took the metal end legs of an old treadle sewing machine, cut them down a little more than 1/3 from the top part. The box part where the sewing machine lived, that was turned into a large shadow box with a nice heavy glass for the top. The CT is heavy but it is pretty. I didn't have anywhere in my house to put it but my son sures like it. It's in his living room.

zz-pd 04-15-2010 05:28 PM

that is really neat. thank you for sharing. Penny

How nice to be rescued by someone as interested as you...Whoever originally used it would be so happy if they knew where it is right now!

KarenQuilts 04-16-2010 01:08 PM

Can you locate the Model No.?

Below is quoted from:
http://sewingmachinerepair.blogspot.com/

"On most Singer machines the model number will be a 2-4 digit number, often followed by a letter, and located immediately above or below the stitch length lever or dial on the right front vertical part of the machine. For example 401A, 2010, 185J, 201, 301, 221k, etc. Sometimes the number will be painted, or a decal, and on the older machines it may be on a tiny riveted plate."
