Recently I lost my husband of 34 years. We have three children and have 3 granddaughters. I have my youngest daugther and youngest granddaughter living with me. I live in a small 3 bedroom mobile home. I want to start quilting. so far the only thing I have done is the breast cancer awareness quilt for my sister and the cross stitch quilt for my middle granddaughter. I have a few scraps from these. I want to start quilting but don't have the money or the stash. How do I start to build up so I can quilt?

thrift stores, garage sales, flea markets are a good way to get cheap fabric & thread..

My sincere condolences on the loss of your husband. I can only imagine your pain.
To build up your stash, you can buy 1/4 or 1/2 yards of fabric when it is on sale. I also bought the fat quarters when they were on sale. Sometimes, when I find fabric I want to use for a specific quilt, I buy an extra yard to add to my stash. Before I knew it, I had a humongous stash.... good luck! |
You can check out Thrift shops , there is alot of clothing that makes good quilting fabric. Some also have fabric for sale. Check at a LQS to see if they know of anyone that wants to get rid of some fabric. OR maybe someone on here would like to gift you some of their stash that they don't want .

Build your stash up slowly. Thrift shops have beautiful mens shirts. Word of mouth is another great way. Let people know that you are into quilting and they will keep an eye out for you.

SALES SALES SALES!!!
That's how I started when I started quilting. If you love it and the price is right! buy 3 yards. Until then only buy what you're going to make. If I had to do it again that's what I'd try to do. |
{{{HUGS}}} I know how hard this can be. I've found not only fabric, but kits, at thrift stores in our area. and, as Ann says, word of mouth. When I first started I always bought 1/4 yard more than needed....it helps build your stash. Making wall hangings or mini-quilts are fun, too!!!

i would say thrift stores

Let your family know that's what you'd like for gifts...fabric or tools. Maybe give them a wish list.

It'll happen before you know it ;) Thrift stores and old clothes were how I started.
