I have been buying my thread at Hancock's, Walmart or Hobby Lobby. I hate the multi purpose thread that I got. It is sooo thick that I have trouble threading my machine. It definitely does NOT work with my auto threader.

Can anyone recommend a great thread that not's so expensive I would need a loan???? I would like just a few colors to begin with like white, black, red, navy.

I also do machine embroidery and love my emboidery thread but I need some for regular sewing and quilting.

i buy all of my threads from Connecting Threads now...great prices, good color selection lots of choices...all better than wally world or joannes :)
atlanta thread company is another where some here buy regualarly...and superior threads (which personally i've not had good luck with)

I have Bernina machines and they seem to like Mettler cotton silk finished thread. It is expensive and the last time I purchased any I found a place online. You can do a search and sometimes find a decent price. JoAnn's also sells Gutterman sometimes at 50% off and it is a fairly good thread. Haven't tried Connecting Threads brand but that may be my next stop as even thread prices are going up.

I use Gutterman and buy beige, lavender, pale blue or pale yellow which seems to blend well with most colors. I only use black if I am sewing on black fabric. This week Gutterman thread was on sale for 40% off at Joann's so I got some.

I agree about the Gutterman and the Mettler. If you are spending time and money on your quilts use the best thread. Thread is not that expensive. And it is better on your machine, I service machines and the good thread is not as dirty.

Please consider Aurifil - it will be more expensive than you have been paying - however, one spool lasts a long time - it is a clean thread with very little lint and strong. My Bernina loves this thread!

I love Aurifil thread. It has minimal lint and lasts forever - you'll be filling the bobbin less often.

I don't do embroidery, just sewing and quilting. I love the thread I get from Connecting Threads.com. It is way more reasonable than C&C from Walmart or Hancock Fabrics. I have a Janome and it seems to like the Connecting Threads thread very well.
