I have not been here since 2021 and have not made any quilts since then.

Having problems finding my way around. I posted a question about machine quilting. I have a baby quilt that I am working on and will do the meandering on the quilt. I enjoy doing this and have done a lot of table runners.

My question was about needing to add on to the length of the backing.

Where do I go to post, maybe I did not post in the correct area. Maybe it did not even post. Silly, me I did not even right down the name of my topic so I could search for it.

Hi Loralee! Welcome back! You can always track posts that were successfully posted by going to your member page (click on your name to the left of your message) I looked for your last post and it was in 2021 so likely the earlier post didn't really get uploaded.

Are you trying to figure out if you have enough backing to do your meander machine quilting? I think most people like to have about 4" of extra batting and backing over the size of the flimsy on top. I don't know if there is a hard and fast rule for that. If you baste enough there shouldn't be shifting so four inches may be too much.

Hi Loralee, if you are machine quilting it yourself on your DSM as little as a couple inches on the edges is more than enough for me.

There are a couple of way to get to the link for finding your other posts. If you click on your name above as the thread starter - a pop up comes up that gives you the opportunity to see your other posts. That being said when I do that this post is the only post I see other than your 2021 posts. The second way is in the upper right corner there is your user name with a down arrow - click on the down arrow - which gives you several links related to your account

Getting to your other question - you will want to leave yourself a little wiggle room but you will not need a lot. I would probably go with 1-2 inches. Assuming you will baste it first, there should not be a lot of movement on the back. The reason that longarmers ask for 6-8 is to load the quilt and have room around the center so that the machine has room to freely move without hitting the clamps that hold the quilt taut.

One post said if you are machine quilting it your self on your DSM.......Do you know what DSM stands for?

I still do not know how to reply back to any post other than yours and don't know why.

Sorry, that was my post, DSM is domestic sewing machine…. Meaning your own machine you use for stitching.

Thank you for clarifying it. Yes I am using my Pfaff sewing machine. Not a quilting machine. It easy very easy to do the machine stitiching
with this machine.

Right now I am using my Viking machine. Since the machine that I need won't be ready for a while I will have to wait.

I am going to add another fabric to extend the length needed for the backing. I am wondering if the seam from sewing on an extra fabric would make it more difficult sewing over the seam. The batting for the quilt is very thin. Perhaps I could press open the seam and it would layer flatter, just an Idea.

My question is has any one else added another piece of fabric to extend the backing on their quilt and if it worked ok on their machine? Of course machines may all handle stitching differently.
