Unwanted ads

Why do I suddenly have annoying ads popping up constantly when I try to open and read postings? I use and ipad and have nt had this happen before. It causes me to repeatedly have to scroll down to return to the posting I was reading when the ad for bleach popped up!

MartiMorga 09-01-2013 07:40 AM

Can't pop-ups be blocked on an ipad?

StickyN 09-01-2013 07:56 AM

I don't have that problem on this board but it can be so annoying on others. I don't have an Ipad though.

minx'smom 09-02-2013 05:35 AM

I have been having that same problem with the bleach ad. And when I click on the X to get rid of it, it just opens it up!
I installed a free ad blocker on my IPad last week but it did not help. Very annoying.

Misty's Mom 09-02-2013 05:54 AM

Ad blocker didn't help me either. I emailed them and supposedly they're working on it. I'll not hold my breath.

Caroline S 09-03-2013 05:51 AM

Very, very annoying for me also. I also installed Ad Blocker thinking it would help. NOT. The only thing Ad Blocker did was to keep the advertisement from running. The "skeleton" of the ad still remains and I still have to "X" it to remove it as it locks up the back arrow on the header bar. AAAARRRRG! I have been running SPYBOT on my PC a couple of times a day to get rid of those lurking files. I don't want that junk on my PC.

ArchaicArcane 09-03-2013 08:39 AM

Caroline, on the PC, what browser are you using? I use Firefox and AdBlock Plus and I never see any of the ads.

The only time I see ads is on my iPhone. I haven't taken the time to see if there's a way to block them, but it irks me that I use my data plan to download ads, so I will likely look it up soon.

Caroline S 09-03-2013 02:23 PM

The browser I am using is Google Chrome. I contemplated going to Firefox. I just did not want to have any conflicts with Chrome and all of my favorites, if you know what I mean.

ArchaicArcane 09-04-2013 09:43 AM

The two browsers won't conflict with each other, and FF will have an option to import bookmarks, I think it might be able to do it from Chrome. The bookmarks problem would be more an "ongoing" one. If you save a bookmark in Chrome -after- the import then FF won't know about it. But who knows, there may be a way to keep them in sync via an add-on by now.

Caroline S 09-04-2013 10:19 AM

I just downloaded FF and am in the process of learning the ropes. Thank goodness I have all of my passwords in my address book. So far I have NOT seen any of the dreaded "forever popups". I think I am going to like this after going through the learning curve.

ArchaicArcane 09-04-2013 10:21 AM

Good to hear. :) FF has been my chosen browser for years. It's a little heavy on resources, but Chrome isn't much easier when you look at all of what it's using. Besides, no one is spying on me like with Chrome. Google weirds me out that way.

Caroline S 09-04-2013 10:26 AM

Thanks Tammi for giving me the "push" to Firefox. I know that I am going to like it and so far it appears to be faster.

Caroline S 09-04-2013 12:46 PM

Update, no more popups with Firefox browser.

ArchaicArcane 09-04-2013 10:31 PM

Awesome! Good to hear! :)

sewnsewer2 09-06-2013 06:33 PM

How do I switch from IE to firefox and will I loose anything I have downloaded?

ArchaicArcane 09-06-2013 08:12 PM

You should be able to:
Download Firefox - http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/fx/#desktop
Install Firefox
Start Firefox
Let it import your favorites, etc
Tell it yes you want it to be your default browser

Extra Credit:
Go to Tools - Add-Ons - Get Add-ons
In the upper right corner, in "Search All Add-ons" - type Adblock Plus
Choose Adblock Plus (current version is 2.3.2) and click "Install"
Restart the browser (I think, it will prompt you if needed)

Nothing gets lost.

Ditto to Tammi's response. The only thing I had to do was re-establish my passwords to my favorite sites. As with any change there will be some differences but well worth it.

Please please please stops these pop up ads!!! I use and iPad and the quilting board site is the ONLY place they appear.i have the pop up blocker activated, but this site is the only one they come to. And worse yet, they seem to bounce around and the ULTA ad doesn't have an place to close it - you have to try to ignore it. I'm ready to cancel this board.

Which part fouled up? It's usually a pretty straight forward process...

The part where you type adblock. I can't find where to do it. I am using FF right now to type this. Don't like to tool bar either.

ArchaicArcane 09-07-2013 01:23 PM

The Ad Block is extra credit, I don't think it's mandatory. Did the pop ups stay away?
Toolbars can be turned off and on on the view menu.

gale 09-07-2013 01:26 PM

try this-go to this website in the firefox browser.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/fir.../adblock-plus/

click on add to firefox

You may have to subscribe to filters. You can do that after adblock is installed. Just go to the preferences. Tools/adblock plus/preferences.

gale 09-07-2013 01:27 PM

Firefox is pretty customizable. When I first switched to it, it was hard to get used to but I did eventually. Now it's my most used browser (I use chrome for some sites).

ArchaicArcane 09-07-2013 01:28 PM

Good call Gale, As with most computer things, there's more than one way to do everything ;)
I don't subscribe to any filters, just use Adblock Plus plain and I've never had popups or advertising on the QB while using FF.

sewnsewer2 09-07-2013 01:44 PM

Ok, I downloaded adblock, now what?

gale 09-07-2013 02:45 PM

It should have automatically installed it. You'd have a small stop sign looking icon (mine is on the lower left side of my browser). If you don't see it, try closing and reopening firefox.

sewnsewer2 09-07-2013 02:56 PM

gale, I don't see it and I even restarted. I see most visited, getting started, bing, http downloads.yahoo and mail

gale 09-07-2013 07:33 PM

Try this. Go to tools/add-ons and a new window will open up. See if adblock plus shows up on that new page. If it's there, and there is a button that says "enable", click on it. You might have to restart firefox after that.

eta: what you're looking at is your bookmarks bar. The icon for adblock is on the bottom of my browser-not the top.

gale 09-07-2013 07:35 PM

Wait, try this. Go to tools and see if adblock is on the tools menu that pops out. If it's not, then it didn't get installed correctly. When you add it from the page I linked you might have to approve the installation.

gale, this is what I see.

My FF doesn't show the Ad Block icon either because I don't show the "Add On" toolbar. (View -> Toolbars -> Add-On Bar). I don't get ads though.

If it's installed, and you're not getting popups, I wouldn't worry about it. Just surf away to your heart's content. :)

Tools -> Add-Ons should show the part in red:

If you see ads on this site (not just popups, but any ads), adblock isn't working. Do you see it on your add-ons page like Tammi posted above?

nygal 09-08-2013 11:16 AM

I just had the bleach ad pop up and I am on my iPad. The x got rid of it this time. They are a pain!

I went to that window and it said my avast was disabled so I enabled it. Then I poked around and it said pop up blocked, is that it???? My pc has been running so slow since I downloaded FF, is that normal?

Also I keep getting a pop up from FF asking if I want to down load internet helper 3.1 and one that says would you like to install the plug in needed to display the media on this page. Should I??

ArchaicArcane 09-08-2013 03:02 PM

This is not FireFox that did this. FF is legitimate software. What you're describing is malware or scareware (once they ask for money to fix something or to stop something, it will cross the line from malware to scareware.).

More likely, a site you went to was infected and avast failed to stop it. This could have happened with Internet explorer / Chrome or FF. unfortunately.

The general rule of stuff like this is if you didn't ask for the software, don't install or pay for it. Internet helper is NOT good software.

Pop up blocked may be from Firefox, but I don't think it is. I've never seen that. You still didn't let us know if the Ad Block plus was in that window.

No, it's not normal to have your PC run slowly because of FF. My FF does run slowly because I have sometimes 70 tabs open, but only FF runs slowly because of that, not the whole PC. The reason your computer is running slow is the malware that's running on it. :(

This is something that several sites online can help you remove whatever's on your machine - for free, don't ever pay for it. I could help you if I was closer. Do you have a family member who's good with computers? I wouldn't be shocked to find that it's Search Conduit that you have installed. It's incredibly invasive, and I think it goes without saying that it's "bad" as well.

sewnsewer2 09-08-2013 04:04 PM

FINALLY!!! I was able to get the Adblock!! YIPPEE! I went and uninstalled a bunch of crap too. (Yes, I checked it all out before uninstalling it.) I don't see the ABP icon on this page tho.

ArchaicArcane 09-08-2013 05:38 PM

Good girl! :) I'd guess it's running a bit better now too?

As I mentioned in post #32, you won't see it unless the Add-ons toolbar is enabled.

sewnsewer2 09-08-2013 05:48 PM

Yes, I see it now on the bottom tool bar just above my system tray. How do I move it up to the tool bar?

BTW, THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH for everyone's help in this! :o

ArchaicArcane 09-08-2013 05:54 PM

I don't think you can move it to the top. That said, you really don't need it showing, it will do its job without being there. i would just turn that toolbar off.

Glad you got it sorted out. :)
