What an interesting idea, Leslie. I had to chuckle because I would look like death warmed over in some of the Civil War prints that fascinate me, LOL. Soft, dusty colors are horrible on me -- it's bright white and strong contrast I do best in.

In good fortune, I didn't want to use the orange so I wandered around a shop looking for a fabric with 4 distinct colors that I liked together. I found one that actually had more so then I walked around and pulled one fat quarter of each color and looked at them together. Then I chose fabrics from stash and shopping that went with the 4 fat quarters.

Thanks for explaining your process, Pagzz! I really can't buy fabric for the mystery this year, so I will have to come up with a palette from my stash. I have quite a bit of navy and red, so I think one of those (if not both) will have to factor in. Looking forward to the release of the intro and colors at the end of the month!

That's a great way to use a focus fabric Pagzz. Thanks for explaining your process. I love her mystery quilts and last year I made it in solid yardage instead of scrappy. This next year I plan on making it in "my colors". I'll use your way to get a pleasing palette. I hope.

Update on the blue and brown Smith Mountain Morning (trial attempt). I really didn't like brown and blue together. So I put the top in the Honeyville Quilt Show and Sale. It sold. That forced me to make another one. I chose purple and green and Harriet will deliver it to Essenhaus when she does her teaching there in mid October.
Since I didn't know if I would get it back in time for the class, I started another one.....a red one that got too red. See it on Virtual Quilting Weekend thread.
