Scissor Queen you are awesome - what will power.
I am up to 35 crumb blocks and the garbage pail is full of snippets. Both the beige-yellow and the purple bags are almost empty. There is hope - one scrap at a time. |
I totally agree--will power Queen she is!
WTG on the crumb blocks MQuilter. Today my Quilt Buddies finally got together--hadn't all summer. We tried the disappearing pinwheel. Like the outcomes but hate have to deal with all those bias edges. We put together 3 blocks and will finish off making a table runner. We dug from our stashes of course. One could just make HST's the regular way, but the finished pinwheel must be equally divisible by 3. May take some time and figure it out as we really liked the options. Instead of making a pinwheel make an hourglass block and you get another different looking quilt block. http://www.chinovalleyquilters.com/u...joy_pdf_os.pdf |
Finally finding time to read the latest posts. Love the pics that have been posted lately. Martina..your scrappy quilt is great. I am making a backing from my stash and still working on it. Trying very hard to shop stash for rest of year but our guild is taking a road trip on the 30th to a quilt shop and getting a 15% discount. I will try to stay strong. Hope this thread continues for next year. It has really helped me and evidently some better than others. Who mentioned only buying 1 yard of fabric this year! Wow! I am bowing to you! Hang in there everyone..the wagon is still rolling along.
OK: Really like that block, thanks for the link. Sigh, yet another set of ideas that would be so much fun to make. Sandy: Who are these "others" you refer to? Looking around, see no "others" (just have to stay away from mirrors). Has anyone else noticed the renewed enthusiasm on the Board? Just another reason to love the Fall, I call it the beginning of quilting season.

Thanks so much dottie dodge! I will check it out for sure. Last night did make a 12" version and loved how it went together once I got the large HST's made.

http://www.quiltingboard.com/tutoria...t-t251803.html I made a couple samples of the disappearing hour glass in small sizes. They came out so cute! |
I've been there and printed off the chart...Thanks for making it.
Is the smallest size you sampled started with the 4 1/2 squares or did you try to go smaller? |
Emma, I think you are right about renewed interest. I think I am finally done with trips for this year...at least anything longer than a day. Hoping I can visit the QB at least once a day from now on. Trying to concentrate on just getting one thing done at a time but all the other projects keep calling my name. Paper...thanks so much for that chart. You are a math whiz and I bow to you.
I am so happy to get this...I do not like math...it scares me!
As I am cleaning off my sewing table I keep finding more treasures. Yesterday it was large triangles from a previous project. So I made HSTs with the remainder of the snails fabric and with a little finesse, I have 49 (7x7 layout) 6" blocks for another top. Hope to find some time to put it together today. I also found a pretty yellow in my stash for the sashing of the crumb blocks. That stack has grown to 42 (6x7 layout). Feels good to play with the stash. It's kind of like meeting old friends again.
Sounds like fun Martina...I'm taking a break from cleaning--yuk but my DS and BIL are coming on Tuesday for a 2 night stay. Not that they would mind my mess because they won't, but I need to function in my kitchen and living areas when I have company. Got 7 qts of tomato soup out of the canner this morning too.
So wish I was "meeting old friends" instead. |
I just moved and now have a larger then life sewing room..it used to be a formal living room/ding room combination and is now my very own quilting studio. I have 80% of my fabric out of plastic bins and ruler folded on to shelves. I was so surprised at some of the beautiful "old friends" that I had totally forgotten about! I am so inspired all over again..can't wait to get back to quilting, instead of unpacking and cleaning!

Miss Giggle: You know we would love to see pictures.
Gonna pick up my new baby tomorrow. Wonder if any fabric will come home with me as well. Want the baby to ride home in comfort. <gggg>
Martina: New machine, new project. Simple as ABC. Have fun! Show us pictures.
DH is making fun of me for being so giddy. I told him that the more he makes fun of me today the more it will cost him tomorrow. He's still making fun of me.......ohhhh wellllll.
Martina and Missgigglewings...so happy for both of you and Emma is right...we want pictures. I think both of these reasons (new machine and new sewing digs)...deserve an exemption from a fabric moratorium!

I am marching and caring a sign ...............pictures want to see pictures from the M & M girls. I have been oh so good, did finish 4 more and final Halloween 10 minute table runners......wheeew. now that's out of my system............2 have to be delivered, one mailed to my SIL in SC and one for me. Later all............calla

Well, the new baby is home but she is still in the box. We have to fix the wall in the sewing room first. (Had all of our ducting replaced and had to tare out the closet. We are also closing off the door to the bathroom to get more wall space in there. No need to bring the new addition into that mess. She also doesn't have a name yet. Right now I have Luwanda and "Lady Tara" as options.
But I can link you to the Baby Lock site so you can see what she can do. I can't stop smiling. .....and yes, 5 yards of absolutely delicious fabric came home with me along with 3 FQs that will be sent out for the swap. (It was solids, blender, and civil war - nothing in my current repertoir.) http://www.babylock.com/quilting/crescendo/ |
OMG! Its a female version of HAL. Just beautiful and that 11" throat space makes me absolutely green. I understand you don't want to unpack her in the middle of a lot of construction but I swear I would have her out on the dining room table. Had to watch the video twice, a truly amazing machine. Congratulations on your new baby!
Thanks Emma. Been thinking of a name and the one that seems to stick is "Anutie Em"
Since I'm Auntie Em to several nieces and nephews I'm going to choose to be honored. Has she been out of the box yet?

There is a noticeable change in my solids and purples. Maybe there are some new color choices in the future to use up some of the other colors. By the way found the colors I needed for the mystery quilt along. No purchases were made, I'm so pleased.
I'll tell ya what. move a good size stash as many times as I have and not buying new fabric gets easier and easier with every move. It's been moved 7 times since 2005. It got heavier and bigger every time. |
No, Emma, she is still boxed up. We had to have all of our ducting replaced in the house so my sewing room closet got dismantled. We decided to use that extra space to enlarge the bathroom. So first, the closet wall has to be closed off and we decided to close off the other door into the bathroom. (Need wall space in the bathroom.) So I don't want to pull a brand new machine into sheet rock work.

I just realized that I got around any moratorium handed down. My sister GAVE me 52 fat quarters, and many yards from her stash. Since I did not pay for it, I am in the clear. YAY!! (actually I did not join, so no one can yell at me) :-)
Boston--we don't yell...we just say "we understand."
Boston: No, no yelling around here. Once in a while a deep sigh is heard but mostly over our own transgressions. Martina: The sheetrock thing, been there done that. We had a home improvement that took six months. We literally had a white Christmas. The tree and all its ornaments were covered with plaster dust. Your construction sounds like it will be great when its finished, larger rooms are always better. After mine I swore I would live in a hovel before I ever did major construction while I lived in the house. Nearest I ever came to being a homicidal maniac. Auntie Em is definitely better in her box for now, a big something to look forward to.
I think I need to get in on this one. I know I have far more fabric than I will use in my lifetime, especially since I am nearing 80 in two months, and I don't have any quilters in my family.
FM: Although I'm a mite younger than you I have exactly the same problem. No quilters in my family to take over the load and I know if I sewed all day everyday for the rest of my life I would never use it all up. While there have been many falls from grace this thread really does help me to think about my purchases. You are more than welcome to join us as we battle out addiction.
Boston, we only yell in commiseration or to cheer you on. Never in a bad way. What a nice gift you got from your sis. My sister is only into outdoorsy things (the girl even has her own chain saw and fancy chain saw pants). She keeps telling me she'd share the wood with me. lol
FM welcome to our group. So glad you could join us. I do not see any future quilters in my family either so will have a gigantic sale when I get to the point where i can't quilt any longer. My problem is that I take all the orphan blocks and scraps that friends do not want because I can't bear to see them go in the trash. I could probably make 20 scrap quilts with what I have now. Just taking the time to sort everything out would take a year at least. I am trying to do Bonnie Hunter's scrap organization thing but life always gets in the way. Have a class next month taught by Pam Buda so need to see what I need for it. Hopefully, I can pull from stash. Martina, how exciting to get a new machine. She will patiently wait in its box until things are ready for her. Happy for you!
My family also does not include any future quilters. There will be a big sale at my house when I no longer need my stash (and someone else will be confessing about their great garage sale purchase!). I don't feel guilty in the least about having all this unused fabric, however. The way I look at it is that my hobby is one that accumulates stuff. I have one friend who's a golfer. Do you know how much it costs for a round? If I spent that much on fabric on a weekly basis, my stash would be much, much bigger. I have other friends who frequently enjoy an upscale meal and others who take a cruise every year or so. When their money has been spent, they have lovely memories & photos, but nothing tangible that accumulates in their closets (and under their bed and...) I enjoy the whole quilting experience: cutting, sewing, pressing and shopping!! I just now need to concentrate on the first 3 aspects I've listed to balance my quilting hobby experience.
Princess: Totally agree, its the evidence that gets us in trouble. Just as you said, the amount most people I know spend in a restaurant far surpasses my fabric purchases even in a bad month. It is easy to pull a queen size quilt from my stash and I rarely buy fabric with any particular project in mind. To be honest, if I ever find I don't have enough of a certain fabric (blenders, solids, and focus fabrics) to shop my stash I will buy to flesh out the inventory.
We'll said PP, my friend attended the Bonnie Hunter workshop too. The guild meeting was so informative........calla
I've been gone for a week or so, been reading to catch up on whats happening here...you all have been busy! Lets see, Princess went to Bonnie Hunters class, so did Calla, there's a New Baby among the group (you will love, love, love your baby lock), FM says no one but her quilts in her family..lots of 'same heres' heard on that one, and I'll join 'same here.' I down loaded a chart from Princess, love the chart, Emmas got lots of quilts done and it goes on.. love it here.
Now I humbly bow my head and ask for lots of understanding, I bought 5 yards of fabric! Had to piece 72 little 6" blocks and needed a background to show them off. I cut enough 6 inch blocks out of the new fabric to go between the pieced blocks and set them on point. Yay! it worked. I will have enough left to use on some other things needing the same background. I've spent some time at our home in southern Utah the past few days and am ready to dive into quilting stuff again. |
Here it is, October already!!!! Officially the challenge is over in a month (The November 1 end date is left over from prior years, I think I'll also change that next year. Maybe it should end on U.S. Thanksgiving so we can go crazy on Black Friday??) Bonnie Hunter's workshop was good. Picked up a few tips and bought her newest book, autographed of course, but just seeing her quilts in person was just amazing!!!! My yardage stash is pretty much all neatly folded, but my scrap stash is just stuffed into containers, only separated by cottons & batiks. I was inspired enough to cut up & organize the much smaller bin of batiks. Boy, does that take a long time, but I think the result is worth it! Just looking at those stacks of cleanly cut fabric, ready to be paired with some of my yardage stash is inspiring!
How's the fall going for everyone else? |
Rhonda: Welcome back, you've been missed! On the 5 yards, think you squeak by on the immediate use clause. Princess: I always forget the Moratorium ends. Maybe if I dangled a sizable shopping spree at the end, it would be a positive incentive. Somehow doing it on the last month seems, well how can I say this, devious. How did your new quilt start at BH's workshop go? Have tackled my scrap bin several times, now have a full box of neatly cut scraps. So time consuming! The real answer is doing it as you go along. Trying to do that. The remaining bin is waiting for a day, that I want a mindless task.
Emma you are so right, cutting the scraps as we go keeps them under control, except when there's that pretty piece you really really like which will look soooo good in a mini--so back to the untamed bin it goes:D I like the idea of cutting scraps with a quilt in mind--the quilt takes shape as I'm zipping away with the rotary cutter. Yes PPrinceess, it's a BH quilt. Sounds like a fun trip for you.
For me the Moratorium never ends. I have way to much fabric:shock: |
