Hey, all. Just a reminder that it was OK to purchase if the purchase was needed for a WIP. We were just to pull back on wild impulse buying and to shop our stash first. Don't beat yourself up or carry unnecessary guilt for purchasing to finish a project. I sure liked the exercise of working with what was on hand. Yes, I did purchase backing for some of my quilts, but most backing came from stash. Thinking that 2021 will be pink crazy. I have bin of pink that was hardly touched this year. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png Hope project Linus likes pink!

OOOO Pink bear paws! Love the idea. Thanks. I am a 2.5 addict and don't mind HST so that pattern would work for me. Now I want to get into the sewing room and start. No, No, No! Must finish at least one more UFO and a few more miscellaneous Christmas sewing project first. After the new year I will start creating pink bear's paws. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png

Only one small quilt fabric purchase this year.

I finished the year with a large purchase (21m). My blender selection had been decimated this past year, particularly blues and greens. I hit the clearance section and picked up 11m to round things out a bit.
The remaining 10m was for a gorgeous line I have been resisting all year. I told myself if I remained in love at the end of the year I could reward myself for good behavior! Although 2020 hasn’t been without impulse purchases (2 charm packs and 2 panels) and it took a bit of searching to find a complete selection......I am now the happy owner of a very pretty stack of fabric. It is displayed in an otherwise empty storage cube as a monument to my improved self control |
Thank you for the photo, Teen!
That looks just like a bookcase we inherited from DHs DGM, but ours is just two tiers high (and has piles of fabric sitting on top, LOL.) |
So my trip to the LQS was successful. K bought nothing! She & her daughter went through many closets & unearthed even more fabric, so she's on a fabric diet. She did find some suitable for backing though.
I bought 2 fabric pieces for my still-unplanned western quilt. One is for the backing. It is a cream with line drawings of cowboys with cattle & the Alamo. I asked for 6.5 yards & it had 6.75 so I finished the bolt. Just in case my top needs some filler... So that bit was an impulse. The other is just over a yard of colorful cowboys on horseback, Texas flags, & the Alamo. I finished the bolt there, too. But now i shouldn't need any more fabric for that quilt, just a pattern! I want to showcase the cowboy fabric, so I'll look for layer cake layouts. |
Good for you, Conchalea! Sounds like you kitted up your project and ready to go...
Here is the FQ bundle quilt I made this last week. Finished the borders today. So satisfying to power thru my precuts... https://www.quiltingboard.com/pictur...n-t313541.html |
Teen: Very pretty! Thanks for the close ups.

Teen, what a sweet quilt!
|
Teen, your applique work is lovely. Thanks for showing it.
|
Thank you, everyone!

Teen- your applique is gorgeous, congratulations on finishing this beautiful top. Looking forward to seeing it when it comes back from the longarmer.

Well, I brought out my brand new machine yesterday -- first time -- was getting a pile of stash that needs to be stay stitched before I wash it, I also trim off all the straggles so the fabric hopefully does not tangle up in the washer. Sews wonderfully. Loved sitting there just sewing away on my machine. Have Lots More to work on.
Found a sheet of stash that will be used for my Trooper's uniform exact match to the color. May even have enough for my cousin's wall hanging for the Michigan Troop that he worked out of. |

I actually have empty bins in my sewing room!. In November I decided to have a fleece day and use up the many pieces of fleece I had. (Fleece day stretched into Fleece week and then Fleece month) So 9 baby blankets and 35 hats and 8 or so scarfs I was able to get my 5-6 overflowing bins of fleece into one 2 drawer storage unit. Earlier this year we made strip quilts for childrens charities so that cleared out space too. Also made well over 200 bags for OCC shoeboxes. I had only a few forays into Quilt shops this year so only one buy it because I like it day, 50 percent off LQS fabric so who could blame me. The moratorium has made me more choosey one what fabric I bring home. My daughter brings in more than I do because she does a lot of thrift store shopping and the Walmart dollar clearance fabric she found went right back out the door to the quilt guild for backs for childrens strip quilts. I did buy some collegiate fabric for masks this year as everyone wanted their favorite team.
Have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Sewing year. |
Good job, Lindajane! You were certainly productive and really powered thru your stash! Awesome!
I have a bunch of large Minky scraps from backings and ran across a YouTube to make infinity scarfs. Well, that’s what I’m going to do... then I’ll give them to the women’s shelter after holidays. I should be able to get a bunch done. Just in time for winter.. |
Way to go, LindaJane!
Infinity scarves sounds like a great idea and they will be so soft and cuddly. |
A last minute Christmas project that used up about 3 yards of Christmas fabric. It was a tradition in my family started by our master quilter before she passed to make fabric gift bags for our family gifts. Over the years the bags have been passed on and on and on until now we don't have any. So, this year I restarted the tradition and made bags for my brother and SIL for their gifts. They are just simple bags with a ribbon draw string. Some have squared bottoms others not and they are all different sizes from small 5 X & to 22 X 26. I have already started making bags for my nieces and nephews for Christmas 2021. Each bag will hold two potholders.
Shame on me, I did not take any photos of the bags. Will post photo when I finish more. Such an easy gift and it sure saves on the cost of gift wrap the just goes in the trash every year!! |
This is a great idea! It certainly works great for those odd shaped packages, too!
|
Working on my stash, got 2 quilts for Project Linus almost done and a jigsaw in progress. Hope to use a lot more scraps.
I didn't buy anything this year except a yard of white on white for background. I still have more than I will use in my lifetime, but am working on it. |

WMUTeach: What a wonderful tradition that you are reviving! I have done a few in the past.
dmo: You are doing a great job using your stash. |
I used 6 yards of fabric from my stash making 3 easy bags. Forgot to take pics before I gave them away.
|
Good use of stash, everyone! I spent time organizing my stash & gave some to K's daughter. But she gave me more, plus yarn, so I have more than I did before the trade. I did reduce my yarn stash a little by making & gifting 3 scarves, so the yarn stash is about the same.

Unsubscribed from the web sites that I shop from...occasionally...and get daily teases showing their special of the day. Organizing my fab and I have no business buying any fabric. Confession...today I did type M to see their special and Q for the other web site but didn't order anything https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/frown.png.

When fabrics.com or Jordan Fabrics or JoAnn's or whoever send me deals or bargains, DELETE! I seldom open them and if I need a specific fabric, I do the search and don't allow the shop to lure me into buying what I like but don't need. Not good for those businesses I understand but good for reducing my stash. |
Last night I ordered a whole lot of fabric. Planning a house warming quilt for daughter and SIL. Picked a pattern. Got their approval and color choices. Shopped my stash. Then shopped and ordered. Felt good to be in control of the purchasing process.
|
Making those Bear paws and I bought some khaki for background but the rest is stash. (I started with a half yard piece thinking that would be enough for the hats...but no....!) I can't get over how easy it was to put together. Not huge but meditative, non stressful sewing. Boy do I have scraps tho! I'm making a checkerboard border on 2 sides. All the colors coordinate so it's better than adding to the scrap pile!
|
I'm happy to see people buying mindfully, if at all.
I did buy5 jelly rolls & 1 layer cake this year, but I've used a lot of strips from each JR. I pulled several more tonight for a jelly roll quilt, Ripples, from FQS. Do I have 3 quilts already planned or in progress? Why, yes I do. But I really think this will be a fun & fairly fast quilt to make. Plus, it will reduce my stash, so I'll start it tomorrow! |
Wow, I'm so impressed with how everyone is powering through their stash! I'm doing the BH mystery first time all from stash, except had to buy some lighter neutrals, as I mostly had the tan variety. Looking forward to a new year of conscientious buying. It helps so much to be in this inspiring group!

Time for my summary of 2020 Fabric Moratorium. I managed not to buy "just for stash" for the whole year. I bought some fabrics for the ongoing projects. They filled the gap/dent I had made in the stash throughout the year, but those newly bought fabrics will go soon in big chunks as they are intended for the backs of my UFOs (the UFOs themselves are now either kitted or I have whole blocks already). And I have some plans on how to use up some more fabrics from the stash.
2020 was definitely a success when it comes to reducing the stash! |
Vasilisa: Congratulations on your 2020 stash reducing success! It’s a great feeling, isn’t it?
|
My year end summary is a successful one. I believe I spent $12 in 2020 on fabric- and it was specific for a project. A lot came out of my stash- best guess about 60 yards between what I sent to my son and what I used. The room looks like a cyclone went through but I know when I get in there & start putting away I will find I have a lot more space. I managed to do a whole year temperature quilt ith all scraps- only yardage is th Sashing and borders and it was in my stash for a few years. Another year of moratorium and I might feel like I can buy some new fabric just because I like it. - we will see. I’m going to try to finish up projects and make the kits I have this year.
do we have a 2021 moratorium started ? |
ckcowl: I would like to see your temperature quilt. Yes the new moratorium has started.
