WMUTeach, that's a wonderful idea!

oksew, what a gorgeous fabric. It looks quite gypsy-ish and mysterious to me. Can't wait to see what you do with it.

I just love this wonky look (blocks slapped up on wall) but am not clever enough to figure out how to sew it this way. My question is, do you like this dark sashing or would you use a cream tonal?

WMUTeach 11-25-2020 03:18 AM

Joe's Mom, I like the sashing. It frames the blocks and brings unity to the whole quilt. Even in your pictures the blocks seem to pop and show off themselves.

Rff1010 11-25-2020 08:29 AM

I actually like the white better. Looks more innocent...which makes no sense I realize but it's the description that leaps to mind.

Teen 11-25-2020 01:22 PM

I like either layout, joesmom...lol.. sorry, not very helpful but I like the simplicity of the first and the boldness of the second.

Teen 11-25-2020 01:33 PM

Here is the QOV I made from those strip pieced orphan blocks I found in sewing closet. Entire quilt from stash...and, I found some backing in stash... all good...lol..

Irishrose2 11-25-2020 02:27 PM

joesmom, I like the darker one.

Teen, your quilt will warm your uncle's heart. My aunt who has to be close to 90 made one for my brother. He has hung it next to his bed so he can see it rather than over the headboard where he couldn't. I like the corner blocks. They stand out with the simpler ones on the sides.

joe'smom 11-25-2020 03:44 PM

Wow, Teen! That is a very dynamic quilt. I imagine your Uncle will be thrilled with it.

retiredteacher09 11-25-2020 04:48 PM

joes'mom: I just made some wonky blocks. I saw a picture and I wanted to try a few. I made 4 and they all tilted the same way. I realized I needed to trim from the back if I wanted to make them tilt the other way. Oh, my! If you want to try wonky like your first picture, I would add a big sashing around them and then take a square ruler and tilt it to the angle you want and trim. It was a tough concept for me to tilt my ruler and cut. I haven't snapped a pic yet.

Teen: Your quilt top is awesome! Lucky uncle!

We have a extra VQW which starts today.

Teen 11-25-2020 05:25 PM

Thank you everyone!!

joe'smom 11-25-2020 06:45 PM

retiredteacher, that makes sense! Thanks!

Synnove 11-26-2020 06:37 AM

A finish entirely from stash!

I just finished glue-basting the Tiny Houses quilt (pattern from Missouri Star) that I completed from stash. Each house uses such small pieces, and it was so much fun to throw a huge variety in there. Some is from years back, some is from a bag of scraps given to me by a friend, and the backing is so old I can't even remember where/when I got it. The batting was originally for a lap quilt which I never made, so it fit well into this baby quilt. And now, on to FMQ! And then back to my attempt to make another dent in the stash.

rryder 11-26-2020 08:17 AM

Joes Mom- I like the white best because it really emphasizes the wonkiness, but the dark sashing looks good too.

Teen- neat QOV and congrats on getting it all done from stash!

Rob

retiredteacher09 11-26-2020 05:03 PM

Synnove: Welcome to the board. I look forward to seeing a picture of your Tiny Houses quilt. It’s fun to find just the right fabric to use in a project, isn’t it?

Vasilisa 11-27-2020 05:23 AM

This has been already said, but the current pandemics really makes it easier to not buy what is not necessary, as I keep staying at home and not shopping in thrift stores. A few days ago I made my first online fabric buy since spring and I somehow avoided not buying anything just for stash. Maybe this is because I bought plenty of fabrics for the ongoing projects and my greed for pretty new things was satisfied... for now...

Conchalea 11-28-2020 08:06 PM

Since it's now post-Black Friday, I suppose the moratorium is officially done for this year. I jumped off the wagon early, buying some Christmas tree panels for for K & myself. In turn, she bought one with an old red pickup in front of a barn for me. Today we cut border fabric for that panel. She's already quilted & bound her panel. I'm falling behind because I've been riding my motorcycle. In November alone I've ridden 1140 miles! My club has mileage contests & I want to reach 10,000 miles for our new year, which began November 1. So sewing has been set aside for several days.

oksewglad 11-28-2020 09:37 PM

I went off the wagon, too. Went to a LQS to the east of me about 45 miles. I had to head for an errand that direction anyway to just kept going! 25% sale and brought home 10 yards. Bonus...3 yard piece is just perfect to use in vertical strips on current UFO I'm working on! Ready to start cutting the strips I need.

WMUTeach 11-29-2020 04:20 AM

Still on the wagon. With some mild persistence and determination, I can see the difference in my stash from January 1 to now, November 29. I feel as if I was on a fabric diet. When you learn to eat less on a regular basis, you are not as hungry as you thought you were. Translate that to buying fabric. I find that I am not drawn to "special deals" or unplanned impulse purchases. I have a much stronger "delete" finger on my right hand. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/wink.png When I am "hungry", need fabric for a specific project, I "eat" but do not buy more that what is needed. This year I have also learned about the fabric that I have in my stash because I keep going through it over and over for projects of all kinds. Because of learning about my own stash, when I came upon a local quilt shop that was closing and their 50% off bargains, I knew what fabrics would be used with what was already on hand. Thus fewer "snack foods" that go with nothing and more coordinating colors, patterns and so on to fill my plate.

I will keep my seat on the wagon and continue to "eat" from my pantry of beautiful fabric. Hope to see this wagon on the road again in 2021. I need to maintain my diet attitude and become the svelte quilter that I know I can be. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png

oksewglad 11-29-2020 07:30 AM

WMUTeach. I love you analogy! Well said.

petthefabric 11-29-2020 01:06 PM

Finished another top-3yds. Need to shop stash for back. Checked once and nothing jumped. Will need to hunt harder.

Cattitude 11-30-2020 05:24 AM

My experience has been similar to that of WMUTeach (nicely put, brava!). This week I filled my cart twice because I was “allowed to” and yet it didn’t take a ton of willpower to hit the delete button. I did not have a large stash and managed to reduce what I did have significantly over the last 11 months. In fact all but a few blenders and maybe 10m of miscellaneous prints are kitted up for projects. I even used up at least half of my scrap bin. Bottom line is I have become much more discriminating. The one thing I splurged on this morning for Cyber Monday was a machine. Last spring I picked up an inexpensive machine for piecing so that I could keep my Janome set up for FMQ. What I didn’t account for was how much I would regret not getting speed control. Funny how you get used to things. This morning I purchased a Singer Quantum Stylus 9960 at an excellent price. Pre Janome I had a version of this machine for 20 years, it was a tank. I am hoping for more of the same with this one. The other machine will go to my 10 year old niece who is ready for an upgrade from the toy machine she received a couple of years ago.

Julienm1 11-30-2020 05:37 AM

Went to my3 fav web sites for quilting. Found kinda good deals, loaded up cart on the web sites, looked at the note I've taped to my computer, NO MORE FABRIC, and deleted the shopping. I just need to continue to shop my stuff and keep on digging into the tubs to see what treasures are waiting to see the light of day.

oksewglad 11-30-2020 06:25 AM

Now that Black Friday has passed...Great control pet, Cat, and Julie!

retiredteacher09 11-30-2020 06:25 PM

Cattitude: I like my Singer Quantum 9960. I have newer machines now but plan to set it up in my office to work on projects upstairs and in the sunlight. lol!

My LQS has coupons for the month instead of Small Business Saturday and one of them is for 40% off fabric for any day we choose. There are other coupons too and we can put our coupons in our choice of prizes to try to win after we use it. I think this was a great idea to keep people from crowding the store last Saturday. Only 3 customers can be in the small store at once.

I need some blenders-navy blue, brown, and an olive green. I haven't purchased any fabric since early March.

WMUTeach 11-30-2020 06:29 PM

Cattitude, a new machine is not fabric so you are doing very well. Having an efficient set of tools makes our work so much easier and fulfilling.

Yeah, Julienm1! That strong delete finger is alive and serving you well.

I passed on my 50 masks this afternoon and that is 6 yards out of the way. Now I have an exchange block quilt to assemble. I made my blocks all from stash as well as backing and batting. Photos eventually along with yardage calculations.

joe'smom 11-30-2020 06:58 PM

Very inspiring discipline, ladies!

Thankfully we Do Not have any Fabric Moratorium Police!

Iceblossom 12-02-2020 04:02 AM

I'm still struggling with non-quilting/non-covid stuff in real life as well as the current round of covid restrictions for us here in the Seattle area. This year has not been one of my more productive or just good years in general and I will be glad to put it behind me.

Got a big lift this past week with the return of some of my donation tops that have now been quilted by a fellow reasonably local (we meet halfway) board member who wanted some tops to quilt down. She has a long arm and is considering going professional but not feeling confident yet and especially wanted some practice with her system's robotic features. I'll need to get some pictures.

I pulled my Bonnie Hunter mystery project fabrics out of stash, but need to get going and make a bunch of HST before Friday or I'll be officially behind... I did ask my Tuesday Group ladies for some grays, and now for a couple more reds

Am still doing well with the temptation of fabric, need to order some black but think I can do that without adding anything else to the cart. At least I can do so on line, is harder to actually walk past fabric in a live store.

Rff1010 12-02-2020 06:59 AM

I am applying for a Small Business Saturday - but not Saturday - exemption. My local LQS is having a sale *specifically* on blenders
They also got a new line called Constellation that looks really pretty. I think I'm going to try to leave some money in the local economy.

petthefabric 12-02-2020 01:16 PM

Yesterday, I arranged a quilt on the design wall. Found a large piece for a back and pulled fabrics to coordinate. Think it looks good so starting to sew. Uses ~10 yds fabric. Still can't post pictures.

Conchalea 12-03-2020 04:59 AM

Rff1010, no exemption needed now that we're finally in December! Officially our moratorium is from Jan 1 to Black Friday, so you're good. In these Covid times, local economies need cash influx. Good for you & the store!
as for a 2021 Moratorium, I plan to start a new one near New Year's Eve. Having a fabric moratorium on the board seems to be a tradition. Plus I've seen new people join, so I think it's a good idea to continue.

oksewglad 12-03-2020 06:51 AM

Thanks for hosting Conchalea. I will be following again in January! I enjoy seeing what is all done with our past purchases.

Conchalea 12-03-2020 07:40 AM

I agree, OK! All the creative uses of stash is inspiring.

ka9sdn 12-03-2020 07:47 AM

Even tho I seldom comment and never send pics I read everyone of these. I have ben using my stash for about 4 years now and buy only occasionally so I love this. Thanks for doing it. Will be watching.

Irishrose2 12-03-2020 01:37 PM

I am not buying from Black Friday to January 1, either. I simply have too much fabric and that stuff is heavy. I see my house sinking into oblivion under the weight of fabric and books. That keeps me from purchasing anything I won't use immediately. I did buy a 1/4 yard this week, but it will be used as soon as it's washed.

Ditto, Irish! Not buying anything. I was able to clear out one whole shelf of precuts this year so that makes me very pleased....plus used orphan blocks and used 2 bolts for backing....plus a myriad of other projects I used FQ leftovers. I have a stack of beautiful fabric I have no immediate plans for so I am wrapping these up for Christmas present for SIL. She’ll be over the moon...that’s about 10 yards and will keep her from having to shop for a couple of months with a fresh infusion of new stuff..

Thank you, Conchalea, for hosting this year and volunteering for next year! You are a jewel!

I won't promise to not by anything, but I will promise to buy only what is needed for a specific project. I am sure I can refrain for three and a half more weeks.https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png

See every one and many, many more in January!

I thought I would buy at least something for backgrounds with the end of year sales going on, but really I just have no enthusiasm for buying fabric at the moment. That's a good thing, right? I have enough stash and enough variety that I really need nothing. And then today a friend gifted our charity quilting group with two and a half large totes loaded with fabric! I pulled a muscle in my back carrying it into the house. The ladies are going to be delighted with the haul when we meet again.

Irishrose2 12-03-2020 09:00 PM

Synnove, sorry to hear about your back. It does reinforce what I said about fabric being heavy.

retiredteacher09 12-04-2020 05:53 AM

Ouch, Synnove! Have fun going through the tubs with the ladies.

As I was out of blue, brown, and green blenders, I used my 40% off a day of fabric shopping at my LQS. I also used the $5 a yard coupon on a clearance piece. My total purchase was almost 29 yards. I like my fabric cut into 1.5 yard lengths so I cut them, serged the ends, washed, and dried all of the fabric. Now I need to wait for my JoAnn’s fabric order to be ready for pick up as I needed some solid fabrics (not grunge, tone-on-tone, etc) that my small LQS didn’t have in stock. I haven’t bought any fabric since early March and those were also blenders. I’m still way ahead in the use vs bought category.
