Oksewglad, I thought about this after I posted. I'd say the weave of AMB is a solid more like batiks, whereas Kona is more like standard prints. Both are high quality and can be used together but there are differences.
Would you consider that a reasonable assessment? I know from my own time in a fabric shop back in the early 80s, I developed preferences and preconceptions based on some brands. There has always been cheap fabric, but it seems to me that the feel of the greige goods for say Concord was pretty much the same back in the 80s as Hoffman, but what made the real differences were the saturation and sophistication of the dyes. With more modern fabric, I'm seeing more variation of greige goods than before but then I don't work retail and don't allow myself in shops much any more :p |

Joesmom...Great collection of scrappy’s.... I like the Cluck Cluck Sew pattern and your use of the black. I love black in my quilts. And, I like most of her patterns. I have the chicken pattern I haven’t made yet, which, btw, is on sale today, if interested.
Last night, I looked at all the projects I kitted up and got a bit overwhelmed....so, I just grabbed one and will start that tomorrow while I wait for the backing I ordered for the quilt with the gazillion HST’s I finished... here it is.. |
So beautiful, Teen! I love that soft palette, and your background choice for the trees.

Iceblossom: I forgot about my birthday exemption! 🤷♀️ I guess I better use it up.
I went into my LQS today and used that birthday 20% off coupon on Wonder Clips-50 of them. I wanted to get a couple other things but the owner came with the items as I was leaving. She said to tell the employee checking me out next week that I could use the birthday % again because it wasn’t stocked yet when I got there. Now to decide if I really need the bag pattern and/or the Christmas panel. The LQS is going to do different specials during different time periods instead of small business Saturday. I haven’t seen them yet so I better hide my purse. Lol! I decided to try a few blocks like oksewglad’s wonky legged star. I’m just not very good at improvising something like those legs. I will finish the second block and then decide if I want to make more. My thought was to use up some 4” squares and oddball triangles but it looked easier said than done. I’m also making more kits from pictures I’ve seen in different places. I am trying to use up some of the sizes I have saved that aren’t very pattern friendly for me. For example: 3 and 4” squares. I hope to get lots of sewing done tomorrow. Today was errand day after a quick Zoom BOM and I came home and crashed. 🤷♀️ I was only gone for 2.5 hours and my son drove. I guess my body needed downtime. |
Teen: That is very pretty!
|
Hope you all are doing this in 2021. I need to do this. I did the UFO challenge for the first time this year and it helped me tremendously. I have finished 11 of the 12 projects on the list. Number 12 will be done in December. I also, due to writing them down finished another 20 on top of the 11. I am on a roll and wish, I could have done this at the same time, what a challenge that would be!

Thank you, ladies...
Retired...I love that wonky star quilt oksewglad showed, too. I want to make one, as well. And, it’s good you listen to your body and rest when needed. Rested body stays well!! Today, I took all those triangle cuts created when I squared the on-point lattice quilt and sewed them all together, added sashing and a border using the rest of the scraps and made a baby quilt. Here is the link to the lattice quilt... https://www.quiltingboard.com/pictur...w-t310268.html i love this little 38” baby quilt. Tilda Fabrics are so soft and romantic looking to me. Makes me want to redecorate Shabby Chic..lol. If I’m not in my Bold & Bright zone, I’m all about Tilda.. |

Tazsew, I plan to start this thread again for 2021. I think many are interested in it, & I know it helps me try to stay on the wagon, or train. It's been called both. I've bought more than usual this year, but I taught my friend to quilt, & we stayed in & sewed all summer long. We used up a lot of new & stash fabric in our exploits. So far, only 1 piece joined my collection, as it was bought without a special purpose in mind.
|
I finished the top and back for a quilt. all from stash, ~ 5.5 yds. I tried to post it and discovered all my photo processing programs on the computer aren't working. Called my tech. First step in being able to post pictures.
|
Well, I've seen this thread for a long time and passed it buy, I mean by, and now I realize I need help NOT to buy more fabric. Seems I don't need an excuse to buy fabric: on sale, don't have that color, need more of that color, making a new project and need the right color (do I need more excuses?) So today placed the last two orders on line for my DH log cabin quilt using batiks and white tone on tone. Placed note on my computer screen...NO MORE FABRIC! We'll see if it works.
|
julie - it really isn't no more fabric. It's no more fabric that will not be used immediately. Of course, it's best to shop your stash first. BTW, did you post batik quilt made with circles several years ago?
|
Irish not sure. I know I did make a batik w/h drunkard's path pattern. Did have lots of color and it was over our sofa when I took the pic.

Two November finishes.

I have two quilts finished that fit this category as well as some other threads, Birthday Swap and one is a UFO. The smaller quilt is all from stash even back and batting ans used about 2.5 yards of fabric. This will be a donation to PL. The pink and black is a layer cake and I used the Double Slice Layer Cake pattern from MSQ and used about 4.5 yards of fabric. This one does not have a home yet.
Happy to be back on the up swing of finished work in progress. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/hug.gif |
Just found out 2nd GGB due in July. First is a girl and think I'll just sew up 2, 3, 4, gender neutral quilts and small totes, too. Forget pastels and go for loud and wild. Have a cute owl applique pattern made for friend's baby. Was so much fun to make just may do it again...if I can find the pattern. Is there a thread similar to this but for patterns? Need that with help, too.

Julie, welcome aboard. This is a really great place for those of us with large stashes to get ideas from our fellow quilters dealing with similar design or other issues.
While doing well on full price fabric, I still give myself a certain amount of thrift store shopping exemptions... My big weakness is for "pieces big enough for a back". I have plenty of little pieces and not so much anything over 3 yards. Well, I saw one today at the thrift store, 6+ yards of a nice, rather pale toned largeish scale (4-6" objects) Christmas fabric, on sale today for $10. Old me would have snatched it up in a minute. New me reminded myself that I have already given away most of my holiday fabric, leaving exactly one Christmas themed quilt already on the to-do list and that it was in primary red/green and white and already had a back. We do get a few exemptions per year, and we understand the regular temptations of buying. I still love fabric, textiles of all sorts really. There is no shame in stash! We are just trying to use more of it than we buy. Trying anyway :) |
Welcome to our thread, Julie...enjoy your time with us!
|
WMUTeach, so glad you are back on track! Your grid quilting looks great.
|
Welcome tazsews to this forum and this specific thread. Please share pictures of projects.
julienm1: Welcome to this thread. I enjoy following you in the organizing thread and look forward to pictures of projects using lots of your stash. Teen: Great use for the leftovers from a different quilt. It’s an awesome baby quilt. WMUTeach: Great use of your stash. Love the quilts. |

Julienm1- welcome to this thread.
wmuteach- cool quilts, congratulations on finishing a UFO and making the baby quilt entirely from stash! Rob |
Confession. I have a note on my computer...NO MORE FABRIC! We'll how long that lasts!
|
Thank you, Connie!!
Julie....welcome and congratulations on GGD. You’ll be busy preparing for the little sweetheart. And, a sign “no more fabric” works until the on-line fabric stores send their daily emails. I just delete them without looking at them...mostly...lol.. |
Today, I swam around in my craft closet and stumbled on some orphan blocks from a QOV I did about 2 years ago. Found a panel on shelf I forgot I had, looked up the QOV required measurements, and sat down on EQ8 and designed another QOV. Should have the top done tomorrow...and I might have the backing, too. Once done, I’ll contact my Vet friend in California to provide a recipient name. He has a non-profit that supports Vets and he is the one I make QOV’s for. IpI’ll share picture when done...

Teen, Love your comment about "swimming" in your stash. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png That is what I did last week-end. A local organization is including face masks in their holiday food/gift baskets. I dove in pulled out lots of smallish odds and ends for masks and linings. No quilts finished this week but a very tightly packed shoe box of masks by the week-end! Wow does that project eat up small cuts of fabric. I feel like I have cleaned house in my stash closet. Making masks also resulted in lots of mini scraps for dog beds! Now on to the finish!
I am so impressed with the number of folks who are finishing quilts and so on from what they have on hand. On the whole we have been blessed with an abundance of fabrics and with this year's determination, and an abundance of Covid caution, we are using our stash and that feels really good. Keep pressing on to your personal goal everyone, the end of the year is coming when we can .........do this all again. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/wink.png |
https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/eek.png I dare not swim in my stash...first of all I can't swim...second of all I would be drowning in an ocean of color!

WMUteach...using my stash, for me, has forced me to work with fabrics that I’m sick of. Lol... it helps when a piece of fabric looks different when used in another project... I’ve had this stack of deep purple scraps staring at me...I need to do something with them so I think I’m going to make some totes.. |

Have I reformed?
(Probably not) Had a 60% off coupon* for Joann's so off I toddle for a little retail therapy....NOTHING was jumping out at me as "I need it" Ended up coming home with just a few yards of White on White (because you really can never go wrong with extra WOW in stash) and nothing else. I had a project that I'm currently working on and I was looking for border fabric...and nothing looked good! I did get another pkg of batting but really escaped for much less than I anticipated. *helps that i get irritated with JAF for playing games with their coupons. Mine was for 60% off non-sale items - but this fabric was 30% off, and that one was 40% off, so nothing that was even interesting was really a bargain. |
This evening I was watching a live stream of a group of women talking about Christmas and how to make it meaningful. One suggestion was to give of yourself and from what you have rather than stressing about shopping and running about trying to find gifts for every one. Then I had one of those sparkling magical moments when I thought "I can give some of my collection of pre-cuts as gifts". My collection is not huge but some of those have been sitting for 3 or 4 years in their cellophane wrappers just stacked up looking pretty. It will reduce my stash and will please someone else in a small way with something that they can use. I have a couple of quilting gifts in mind already for a daughter and a friend. Just something to consider. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/wink.png

What a sweet idea, WMUTeach!
I kinda sorta fell off the wagon yesterday. I've been eyeing a piece of fabric at work since I cut kits for the shop (aka eating up eye candy!) I know there was only about 6 yards left on the bolt...gulp...I cut 3 yards of it for me as well as 2 one yard cuts of coordinating fabric. The fabric screams my older sister and I haven't made a quilt for her in some time. I'm thinking this as an outer border of maybe a medallion type quilt. https://www.oldcountrystorefabrics.c...45723tn500.jpg Tomorrow is an open house at the LQS plus Black Friday sale and I want to make sure I had some of this. Now to find time to make it. |
WMUTeach: That's a good idea.
oksewglad: Really cute fabric! I have been working on a kitted UFO so using up fabric. In between, I have been making a block here and there that I have found while cruising this board, on Instagram, etc.. I made 2 of your wonky star blocks, oksewglad. If I make more, I either need to use smaller squares or use my 4" squares and bigger triangles. Lol! It's been a nice diversion to try something different. I found some FG from last year. We were learning to make 4 at a time at an open Friday night sew at the LQS. I brought fabric that wasn't to my liking for all of us to use to practice sewing and then we practiced using our Deb Tucker rulers to trim them. Guess what? I got all of the FG back! I now have them ready to sew to a center square and will choose corner squares as I go. When I put the FG and squares together, I forgot I needed corner squares until I realized the last 2 FG didn't fit. Geesh! |
RetT...have fun with those wonky or maverick stars. I started with 2 1/2" squares in a 9" block.
I am working on a quilt making a 16" block...because 16 doesn't play nice divided by 3, I am using 6" cut squares and will cut the blocks to 16 1/2" to use in my quilt...need 11 of these. Then need 9 to finish at 8"...again using a 3 1/2" cut square and then cut the blocks down to 8 1/2". I am hoping this will work. Using low volume fabrics for most of the background. |
Glad to hear all of you doing so well. I fell off the wagon in August and haven’t been back up since. I think I’ll try again next year.
Happy Thanksgivings everyone. Next year I will post pics of projects I complete with this years purchases and my stash. Next year I figure all of my fabric will be from my stash again. LOL. |
okewsglad: Good strategy for getting the block size you need.
happylab: Looking forward to your completed projects next year. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours also. |
oksew, your fabric is beautiful. I am sucker for medallions or mandalas. Not much sewing going on here.
