petthefabric: Hmmm! I should go through CD’s too.
|
Well, Moratorium Friends, I have slowed down in some ways but I finished 10 dog beds for SPCA. That makes a total of about 3 yards of fabric. Also, made a version of Pat Sloan's "Mini Christmas Charms" tree. That was all stash. Still need to finish the last step of the binding and add label then put it in the Christmas gift pile. Wink, Wink, Wink.
|
Well done, WMUTeach. All for good causes!
I haven't taken time to figure out how much stash I've used this October, but finished 3 large quilts and 1 baby and only bought the backing and outer borders for one of them and backing for the second; the rest stash fabric. |
I taught my husband how to sew last December. He's turned in to my stash-buster. Cannot seem to slow that man down. He loves piecing.

Mini Charming Christmas Tree

Here is my version of the Mini Charming Christmas Tree. I tried my stash of 2.5's but I did not think they played well together. (I did not have a good depth of Christmas fabrics. How could that be?) So I pulled out a jelly roll and went at it. I like it much better and I have enough to make three more trees. All four will be gifts.I used stash for background, batting and backing for all. The pattern is easy and accurate. There is also a 5" charm version. So in the next week I will have used up almost all of a jelly roll and made four gifts. Yeah!

That is adorable, WMUTeach... I’ve got my scraps set aside to make this, too. So cute. Love the colors...perfect for gifts!!
|
WMUTeach, that's gorgeous!
I downloaded both sizes of pattern for that a couple of days ago and have serious intentions... https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/biggrin.png |
Lori, that's awesome that your husband enjoys piecing!
WMUTeach, what a beautiful mini. The fabrics are perfect. |
WMUTeach: I love the colors in your tree.
|
WMUTeach making a few of these should make a dent in the Christmas leftovers! Thanks for sharing.

I'm getting close to finishing a top from stash: 65 x 55, which is ~4 yds with seam allowances, waste, etc.. Now, it's back to stash to find ~4 yds for the back and 1/2 yr for binding. This one is a keeper. Tomorrow or Friday when I feel fresh, I'll attempt a photo, no promises. I've had directions, I'm just not good at following directions.

Very cute WMUTeach.

Hey there moratoriumers :) I've been pretty quiet for me and pretty much off line the last couple of weeks. Some times life just throws a series of things that sound pretty petty and like whining when you list them out so I won't. Nothing horrible, just minor annoyances in most years seem greater this year.
I've gotten so little done quilting-wise this year compared to my normal output. The nice thing about the fabric is it can wait until next year. I've done very well on the not buying! I've sent out some donation boxes. I just finished my last round in the Round Robin project, it will go next to the maker of the center/owner. I had to do a lot of math and figuring based on the fabrics I was using and just laughed when I did indeed have "just enough" of my black yardage. Have a picture of what was left and the story here: https://www.quiltingboard.com/8430161-post1289.html |

petthefabric: Looking forward to the post.
Iceblossom: Very pretty and wahoo to just enough black. I have another top finished. It was a simple enough top but I lost all of my mojo earlier this week. My inspiration was the yard of jungle fabric. I found everything in my stash from donations along the way. The red borders were found in the last bunch of fabric my church group sent my way. Someone had taken a shirt apart. There were leftover sleeves and fronts with pockets. Lol! It worked great for the borders. I’m cutting the rest into strips. It looks better in person. 🤷♀️ |
reteach...from odds and ends you put together some nice quilts. Maybe you just need to rest and then mojo will return!
Another LQS is having a monthly scrap/stash mystery quilt. I pulled out fabrics and was ready to start cutting, but that's as far as it got. Now time for a new one...will see if I get my act together on this one. Will see how my week goes! |
Neat way to use those jungle fabrics, retiredteach!

Thanks for the compliments. I was trying to find the name of the fabric and when I found it, the website said it was rare. I can’t remember the name of it though. Lol!
I am more into a cleaning/organizing stage in my sewing room which is ok. At least, I found my missing crazy patch block, repressed it, checked it’s size (I had to take 2 seams out to make it big enough), and then put it in the correct place. 👍. It was middle 70’s today. Beautiful and totally unexpected weather for this time of year. One less day of winter as I see it. |
oksewglad: I’m trying to avoid anything new right now but the Bonnie Hunter one is sure enticing me to join. I have plenty of time but I’m enjoying working on my own things. Good luck with your monthly mystery quilt.

Oh I need another project like a hole in my head, but need to make a quilt for my brother who is moving into assisted living later this month. |
Retiredteacher, consider joining us on the Bonnie Hunter mystery! For some people, it's a considerable amount of sewing to do in a short time, to those of us who sew every day anyway, it's pretty reasonable.
I'm still looking at my fabrics and my Tuesday ladies are bringing me greys (which I had no where near 5 yards in my stash, I'm thinking maybe 1-3 yards max in all those thousands). But... today I'm going to pull out a large-ish childrens print and see if I can find enough coordinating fabrics to make a juvenile half sized project. Since she mentions in the instructions there will be opportunities to use string piecing, I'm thinking she will have larger than her ordinary tiny pieces and maybe the juvenile print would work... I didn't do many mystery type projects earlier in my quilting career, and I rarely follow anyone's patterns nowadays either. But I'm finding mystery quilts to be rather freeing in using my fabric. Hah, can't blame me if it's not perfect, it was a mystery and I didn't know. I say that now because I have plenty of fabric, earlier there was just no way I was going to drop a ton of money on stuff on an outcome I didn't know. I've liked the Canadian Quilter projects the last couple of years, it was a block a week I think 2 years ago, and then a row by row this year. I printed out the RxR and may indeed do it sometime, but pretty much if I don't do a project when planned or happening I end up not doing it. It starts up in the new year and I'm thinking of doing whatever they have going on this year. I'm pretty happy with my own scrappy style but in things I'm trying to work on now are things more like samplers and such. One of the reasons I did the Round Robin project is this sort of thing is not my style. But, if I had more practice putting together things that I wouldn't ordinarily do, I think it will help me with what I do... I'd like more confidence in putting together different blocks/types/construction techniques than I currently have. edit: Just be aware that is can be some pretty intense sewing doing it in real time and happens between Thanksgiving and New Years -- which is very busy in some people's lives but maybe not so much this year. |
Yesterday, did a trip to Fresno to shop.
Intentionally bought fabric for backs. had tops with me. The clerk measured and said "4 yds". I calculated and said 2.4 yds. Don't need left overs to add to stash. Added .5 for binding and bought 3 for each quilt. Saved ~$25. Lesson, take the calculator and figure it out yourself. |

I bought backing also for three, possibly four quilts. The LQS that is closing was open today for shopping. (Tryingn to clear their shelves.) I had a gift certificate from three years ago that I found so I bought backs before the shop completely disappears. It was hard to not by lots and lots, such lovely fabrics.

Well, no sewing today but I did some sorting of odds and ends squares. I also did a few things outside and enjoyed the weather. Text messages, a couple of phone calls, emails, and FB messages kept me busy too. Blessed with wonderful birthday wishes from family and friends.
Son #1 and I ran an errand and he bought me McDonalds for my birthday meal. Lol! He also gave me a very nice gift card to Target. Son #2 isn’t feeling the best so I won’t get to see my grandson tomorrow as I hoped. Better safe than sorry. Iceblossom: I have done several of BH Mysteries before but just can’t get into it right now. Other projects are calling to me. 🙂. I do have a few weeks to decide though. Thanks for the encouragement. I would only do 1/3 or 1/2 of the units if I joined. petthefabric: Way to go on buying only what you needed. WMUTeach: I’m glad you found and were still able to use your gift certificate. |
I haven't stayed on the moratorium too well in the past week or so, but I did use all stash fabric on my butterfly quilt. Even the backing was a queen sized sheet I had in my stash. Plus the new purchases are panels & wont be in my stash. 2 are ready to quilt right now.
|
Im thinking next week to open 2 containers with fabric packed in them. They've been that way for years because couldn't wedge in another piece of fabric. Now there are 2 empty shelves and wedging won't be necessary. It'll be like getting new fabric to work with, it's been that long.
|
Conchalea: You have been working really hard on finishing K’s daughter’s quilts plus your butterfly quilt. Your panel purchases are for FMQ practice if I remember correctly. So I think you have been doing awesome! I was looking through a box of my DMILs partially finished projects and found the blocks where she made butterflies out of handkerchiefs. One of these days I will investigate that project further.
petthefabric: Have fun going through those containers this week. |
Thanks, Retired! Yes, K & I have been working through many UFOs. She's now an accomplished quilter & binder & loves both. She's also practicing her FMQ & is pretty good at it. I've made her practice pieces & she is also using panels for FMQ. I think she's a quilting junkie now.

I had to buy backing for a quilt...I had nothIng to match...however, I found some yardage for $6/yd on-line so I don’t feel too bad about it. Also, I bought another 40/yd roll of batting. I ran out this summer and was just going to buy “by project” but I really like having that available...and it was 1/2 off.. Other than that, staying true to moratorium as we enter holiday season and close out our year.. goodness...it’s hard to believe this challenging year is almost over.
|
I really like having the batting by the roll, too. I then piece the cutoffs for another quilt. No one can tell that it is pieced. What batting do you use, Teen?
|
I so the same, ok. I use Warm & White mostly but once in awhile I’ll buy Quilters Dream 80/20 or wool if I want the loft.
|
I get the QD 80/20 from my boss at LQS. Really like it. I have 2 3 yard pieces of wool that I haven't tapped into. I'm waiting for a special quilt to use them in.

These are the latest quilts I've kitted up, from FQ bundles supplemented by stash. I plan to keep 'kitting' while I do the Bonnie mystery as a leader/ender project (we'll see how long that lasts). The first is a pattern called 'Field Greens' and the last is a Cluck Cluck Sew pattern called 'Vintage.'

Beautiful stuff, Joe'smom! Nice work and good stash use on all but I really like the color shifts in the 4th one. I'm so rigid I'm really trying to loosen up to actually make things like that instead of just appreciate them.
Am still not feeling any huge urges to buy new fabric, but I am going to order my "normal" 3 yards of black for the next year. That silly little raggedy end was all I had, but it got me through the year. As a reminder to me and for the newer members, we have birthday exemptions and then our behavior from Black Friday to New Year is actually not covered by the moratorium? The two yards I did buy for the round robin were fair use but since I don't really have anything else to confess, will consider it a birthday exemption. I'm so cheap it did feel deliciously wicked to pay full price! This year I switched from Kona Cotton to AMB for my solids. There are some differences, I wouldn't say the AMB is really lighter but it feels/handles silkier. The selvedges on both the white and the black are quite large, about an inch and so I have to watch that while cutting, but the usable width is still reasonable. http://www.clothworks.com/AMB |
OH thanks for posting joe'smom! My fav is the simple large block quilt. Great use of fabrics all brought together with the cornerstones and border. What size are your large squares if I may ask?
Iceb, we have used Kona, AMB, Bella solids and Michael Miller at the LQS. I can always tell when I cut MM fabrics for a customer...it is so silky. All of them are great. Primitive Muslin also has a silky fabric, but it is not solid. |
oksewglad, those are 9.5 in. squares, and the cornerstones are 1.5 in.
|
joesmom, my fave is the first one. the secondary angles and bits of triangle are unique.
