Lovely work and I'm happy to hear of everyone's safe returns home - although the loss of a business is always a sad event - I agree twas smart shopping.

joe'smom 09-24-2020 08:20 AM

Irish, I'm sorry to hear about your LQS! That seems like a very unfair set of circumstances.

petthefabric, such an ordeal for you and so many others -- my heart goes out to you.

Irishrose2 09-24-2020 09:02 AM

The LQS has found a new location. It's on the edge of town with good parking and all one floor so the owner won't have to run up and down stairs to longarm on breaks. Very nice landlord. Moving will be a hassle, but it will all work out. The other small shop owners downtown will be the losers. The quilt shop is a destination for groups - there aren't many quilt stores within 50 miles and the women cruised the other shops while downtown.
It's time for my least favorite part of quilting - pressing the completed top and back.

Anyone else amused and delighted at the though of a LQS as the anchor store??

This little project was squeezed in yesterday because I desperately needed the storage space occupied by the 4 pillow forms. The panel and print yardage was to become a wall hanging for my sewing room....alas no wall space. Nothing suitable for piping in my stash, I will add stuffed binding later, maybe aqua, maybe mustard. One more cat themed fabric dealt with...,yeah!

Notwendy 09-25-2020 10:07 AM

Cattitude - those pillows are adorable! Mustard or aqua would look great as a stuffed binding but, they are also great as-is.

Iceblossom 09-25-2020 02:38 PM

I was able to find my sky blue background for this month's Round Robin from stash and I'm definitely using the fabric I bought for it. Yay me :) Looks like I'm not using my birthday exemption or those 2 yards for the round robin or maybe the bag of scraps will have to count.

Have been getting back into "real life" now that our trip is over but still having fun. Yesterday I finally got my knee x-rayed (it was not good on the trip), and today I picked up my glasses that had been lost somewhere between the factory and my doctor's office before the trip. That's another big yay, they do work better with these contacts than the old pair.

Yesterday Hubby said he felt the Goodwill was calling him, but apparently he/it was confused because I got a full, in-box, never opened Fiskars set of a standard (18x24) mat, 6.5 x 24" ruler, and rotary cutter for $12.99. I've been waiting for a sale to pick up a new mat and now I have extras!

The pillows are cute. Mustard would be my choice but they do look great just the way they are.

Cute pillows, Cattitude!

A great find, Iceblossom!

WMUTeach 09-25-2020 05:26 PM

Cute Kitties, Cattitude. Never saw those four previously. A perrrfect touch for your couch. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/hug.gif

Adorable pillows, Catitude.....i love to make pillows so forms don’t hang around too long at my house. Lol..

Rff1010 09-26-2020 03:33 AM

Catitude - those are cute! My vote is for mustard.
Iceblossom - great rescue from Goodwill!

I have been pretty "quiet" this month, but here is a finish. Top was from a Riley Blake jelly roll that I had in my stash, batting pieced from scrap. I did need to purchase backing. I stumbled on a Riley Black coordinating fabric from a LQS and bought two yards. Thought I would be able to make a second quilt from the jelly roll but , the jelly roll scraps are ones that I don't like with the backing yardage. Ah, well, I will find a place for all of the scraps. I have another top on the design wall, all scraps from stash. Hope to finish by the end of the month.

Irishrose2 09-26-2020 12:02 PM

WMTeach, That's a very happy quilt. I like it.

retiredteacher09 09-26-2020 05:00 PM

WMUTeach: Very pretty! Great way to use up strips.

rryder 09-27-2020 04:40 AM

Great pillows, cattitude- I like them the way they are.

pretty quilt, WMUTeach and way to go on using stash!

Rob

retiredteacher09 09-30-2020 05:22 PM

I used almost 21 yards of fabric this month. I don’t usually do backings, but this month a couple of backings are included with that number along with 3 tops. I put a backing on a quilt for a friend’s daughter who wanted to save her great grandmother’s quilt. The top was made from polyester squares mostly. So add the 21 yards to the 45 or so yards I donated of mostly Christmas fabric to a garage sale fundraiser and I have reduced my stash by 66 yards approximately! Wahoo!

rryder 10-01-2020 03:12 AM

Good job, Connie!

WMUTeach 10-01-2020 04:15 PM

Amazing, Retiredteacher.! I have never tracked total fabric used per month for any of my current projects, UFOs or moratorium finished. Humm, some thing to try just for the fun of it. Educators are such data gatherers. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/boy.gif

retiredteacher09 10-01-2020 04:32 PM

WMUTeach: A few years ago, I read that other people were keeping track so I decided to give it a try. I’m not as good at recording my purchased amounts but this year I only purchased once because of the virus so that was easy. Donations that I receive aren’t included in the tally. It does feel good to do data gathering I like and not the kind I needed to do while teaching. 🤷‍♀️ Fortunately, I taught first grade most of my career and didn’t need to do as much as teachers in upper grades.

petthefabric 10-02-2020 05:28 AM

I've planned to buy fabric today! Yeh! A treat. I want to buy fabric and I'm going to treat myself. Last night I perused my stash for a new project. Collected fabrics and thought of designs. Now ready to get backing for 1 project and 1 matching fabric for a stack, it nees a torquise.

juliasb 10-02-2020 05:53 AM

I did it https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/frown.png I bought 6 yards of CoC fabric last week and I sent it back todayhttps://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/eek.png! Yepper I sent it back. That was a first for me. I decided I didn't need it after all. Besides it did not 'feel' right to my touch. I have never sent back a piece of fabric no matter how bad the quality or ugly it was. Much less a pieces as versatile as a CoC fabric is. I was sad but proud of myself. I did not succumb to my desire to buy more fabric. I hope to do better next time around and not buy at all.

you done good! This is one of the prbs with online shopping.

Irishrose2 10-06-2020 07:59 AM

Good for you, Julia. I'd like to not buy online fabric unless I am familiar with the manufacturer, but sometimes it's hard.

I fell off the wagon and ordered that jelly roll that was calling my name. I don't feel bad as it will be cut as soon as it arrives and the quilt will use a lot of my black/white stash. I'm pleased I didn't order it until I had a use for it.

joe'smom 10-06-2020 08:58 AM

I am continuing with my compulsive prepping of planned projects. I finished with the stash quilt prepping and have moved on to the FQ bundle quilt prepping, most of which are also augmented by stash fabrics. I had a design failure with the latest one, or rather, a pattern choice failure. I used the 'Field Greens' pattern, undeterred by the fact that it requires strong value contrast. I have both light and med/dark fabrics in the background, and my medium pinwheel color doesn't really stand out well on either, LOL. It will still be pretty, but not quite what the pattern intended.

Irishrose, You aren't off the wagon rather you are applying the truer purpose of our moratorium. We want to use what we have and buy only what we have an immediate use for. This will keep us from building up stores of excess fabric. Good for you!

Irishrose2 10-07-2020 08:13 AM

MSUTeach, I agree. One jelly roll will use up a lot of b/w and I'm sure I can build a back from stash, too. It's a win-win. By waiting, I found it at a better price, too. It was very pricy most places. Just need to get the red/white/black quilt finished before the pretty ombre JR arrives.

Iceblossom 10-08-2020 11:26 AM

Another day of sorting fabrics and cleaning up ahead of me today, but some days it actually feels good and is what I want to do.

LOL, not so sure if today is one of the good days or not but I'll least make a start by making a new box for "small collections". I have some loose groups of things I decided belonged with each other, and need to go through the existing box as well, think I've used up enough that even with some new groups it will all fit in one box. Then I have to think of the likelihood of things like am I ever really going to use a lot of dog fabrics in a quilt again and maybe it's time to pass the collection to a quilter that will.

I have some things to do and get done before Thanksgiving and hoping to do the Bonnie Hunter Mystery again this year. If I start now I just might make it :p

Jelly Roll From Stash

1 Attachment(s)
My latest finish. The fabric for this quilt is all from stash including the batting and back. I used the MSQ Jelly Roll Race #3 pattern but cut 2.5 strips from my stash. I would do this one again. I am not a big Jelly Roll Race fan but those little triangles gave it a different appearance scattered over the quilt. Used up about 7 yards of stash and I call that good. This quilt will go to Project Linus later this month along with a baby quilt and another to be determined.

Rejoice in your cleaning and sorting, Ice Blossom. Boy it feels so good to be free of what you won't use, what you forgot your had and to organize what you have on hand when you need it. I learned by experience! https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/boy.gif

retiredteacher09 10-08-2020 04:39 PM

Iceblossom: I hope you made great progress today.

WMUTeach: Very nice! I will need to check out that pattern.

oksewglad 10-08-2020 04:59 PM

I went over to a Mennonite store for zippers...2 farm jackets need new zippers and I knew they would have some nice metal ones. Of course there was fabric, too. Bought some light gray flannel wide backing and a gray wide backing. not sure what I will use the flannel for, but it was nice and soft. The other piece will be used on a quilt that when I did buy the backing, I didn't get enough. So have to make a quilt to fit it! Also a couple of half yard pieces of gray tone on tones. But I got a good deal on the zippers!

entangled 10-09-2020 03:06 AM

Beautiful quilt, WMUteach! I love those colors and agree -- the just something about triangles. I'm adding this pattern to my list of quick (but cute) quilts to make someday.

tranum 10-12-2020 06:55 AM

Spent no money at JoAnn Fabric yesterday but not by my choice.
I need about 24” of DMC tread in a certain color. Just a few empty bins & of course, what I wanted is sold out.
Getting low on light gray thread so it’s on sale, I’ll pick up a supply. None to be had.
Next time.

Irishrose2 10-12-2020 11:16 AM

Had to hit two fabric stores in order to find sashing for my next quilt. Hobby Lobby has what I want, but it's too thin - white dots on black. I ended up with white paint splatters on black. Hoping for the best.
One store was in the country, so I had a nice color tour getting there.

Cattitude 10-13-2020 04:35 AM

You are a machine WMUTeach! Two more nice ones and with completely different styles. Nice to mix it up!
I will be making a trip to my favourite shop next week for their annual sale. Their prices are the best around by far and every October they have a week of 10% discount across the board. I have matched up my stash widebacks with completed quilt tops and find I require 5 more. Also need to stock up on a few solids and blenders. I think that will be it for me as I have enough kitted and planned projects to keep me busy for at least the next six months.

I am not too worried about succumbing to Black Friday sales this year....my main problem in the past has been with online purchases and I think the sales this year won’t be good enough to tempt me. Fabric continues to fly off the shelf for these retailers and so why would they offer deep discounts? I don’t blame them at all for “making hay while the sun shines”!

Iceblossom 10-13-2020 07:03 AM

Well... I made some progress but I just had my plans for today change somewhat.

Putting on some loud music and doing a couple hours of fabric sorting would probably be better than messing around on the computer :)

I really like this quilt, WMUTeach... great use of scraps...

No purchases for me for several months now. I had to go into Joann’s the other day. Haven’t been inside one all year but I only purchased a skein of chenille yarn I needed for a project. I didn’t’t even wander into the fabric section... took some strength, tho...lol.

Irishrose2 10-20-2020 07:49 AM

I finished the red and black quilt, but my pictures won't load. Now on to a baby quilt. Purchased one yard of fabric for it.

WMUTeach 10-20-2020 04:42 PM

Is this true confessions or a celebration for the bargains I walked into? This morning I went to a local quilt shop to pick up some fleece for donation projects. As the three of us were loading our cars, the manager of the store came to us and said, "This is the last day the shop will be open. Please shop and you can have 50% off everything." The owner of the shop passed away very recently but we had no idea the store was closing its' doors. This was a long standing business in town. So sad to see this top quality Bernina dealer and fabric shop go by the way because no one wanted to buy the business. The owner taught classes, was a stunning long armer and carried a good selection of top quality fabrics and on and on. Well $350 dollars later, I walked to my car with 6 yards of wide back and 36+ yards of miscellaneous fabrics, to deepen the color selection of my stash. I also purchased a collection of little odds and ends that I always said I would buy sometime later. Today was later! I have quilting gloves, fabric pen, a 16" square up template and on and on. You get the idea. I feel blessed and thrilled to have some new fabrics to work with this winter all at a beautiful discount. It makes all my efforts to use only my stash this year all worth it.

Conchalea 10-20-2020 05:40 PM

Fabulous luck, WMU! I don't run into many bargains myself. I think this was your reward for staying on the wagon so long.
