I have seen some beautiful RWB that are not screaming bright or over powering. Consider the Reds and Blues often seen in Civil War collections and use cream rather than white. Those might work for you. Or intersperse some medium blue or gold with the RWB. Just some thoughts. I have the Carpenter's Star on my to do list for a nephew, just haven't found colors that look like him yet.

So beautiful, oksewglad!

The second QOV. This will be finished shortly. 63 5" squares made from 1.5 " scrap strips. 1 7/8 yards of stash..bought 3 yards of light fabric to finish so a net gain of 1 1/8 yards. Sashes are 3.5 cuts and outer border a 5 inch cut. Hope to have enough backing leftover to bind. 4 yards of backing provided by QOV group.

Conchalea 09-06-2020 12:08 PM

OK, if you used the yardage to finish it, I don't consider that a gain. Only if some goes into stash does it count as a gain in stash.

Oksewglad: Very pretty quilts!

I finally finished a quilt top! I have been sorting/organizing, not only my sewing area, but also other places in my house. I needed a break from sewing, I believe.

This is Harmony and it is from GEDesigns. I wanted to use a dark background sometime and this one was it! It’s 70.5” by 81”. For now, it will go into the church quilting pile to be finished when we meet again. However, it is really pulling at me to finish it so if I figure out who needs it, I will pull it out and finish it.

oksewglad 09-06-2020 01:52 PM

That's a striking quilt, Connie!

Irishrose2 09-06-2020 02:49 PM

Oksewglad, I like the golds and tans with the RWB. That would work well with the 'old' Marine's living room. Very nice.

Cattitude 09-07-2020 03:18 AM

Oksewglad, nice finishes! Two very different looking rail fence tops.

Retiredteach, fun and colourful, right up my alley. Gudrun has some striking designs, doesn’t she?

AUQuilter 09-07-2020 07:57 AM

Oksewglad, beautiful QOV quilts! Like the way you did them. Retiredteach09, Gudrun's designs are so inspiring and your fabric choices really make it shine. Thanks for posting.

I admire how productive you ladies are, and how beautiful your work is. And then you give it away. You are special.

Iceblossom 09-07-2020 10:34 AM

Just wanted to check in with everyone and see all the wonderful uses of stash and talent!

Also to say that the fabric I ordered from Jordan Fabrics came very nicely and timely and I love it and do intend to use it on the round robin -- if I can with what has gone before. And if I can't well it's on the "I want to do something with this soon" list. It took about a week to get to us, which is shorter than I figured. On our trip that starts in about a week we are going through Grants Pass where they are located but it is still closed to the public due to Covid. I still claim a birthday exemption that is unlikely to get used, but there should I need it.

Such beautiful and creative work from all, today I'm finally getting around to making my husband a special mask or two to wear on Bowling night. Leagues will be opened soon, but not to the general public like me.

Irishrose2 09-07-2020 11:32 AM

Grr. Hurrying doesn't work with quilting. My quilt has two very different colored blocks made of nine patches and HSTs so I felt comfortable working with one of each at a time so I could chain sew. Yup, sewed a red/black strip of three blocks to a strip of red/white blocks. Seam ripper time. Thank goodness it's only 18 1/2". I will finish these blocks today and start the sashing!!!!!

I need y'all to remind me why I'm here. There is a jelly roll calling my name. I don't need it, I wouldn't have time to use it, but I WANT it!

Conchalea 09-07-2020 01:23 PM

Irish, we all have that fabric that calls to us with a siren's song. Odyssus put wax in his crews' ears. Will that help you?

retiredteacher09 09-07-2020 05:11 PM

Thank you for the compliments. Gudrun Erla does have inspiring designs that look hard but she makes them easy.

Irish2: 🤞for not adding it to your stash, 🥰

Rff1010 09-07-2020 11:58 PM

Forgive me sisters and brothers. I have fallen...and fallen HARD.
Went to Joanns for backing from the flannel sale. I had some but not enough. Ended up bringing home enough for 2 other backing. (But it was a sale!)
Then, my current project needed material for 1.more border. I had purchased something at a LQS and when comparing the leftover scraps...realized it was exactly right. So I go to the LQS. Where they ran out of said perfect fabric! But instead 2 items from the sale section said "Please, we would like to come home with you." And as previously mentioned- I'm a sucker for a sale.
So $60 spent - 13.5 yaards of flannel( 3.5 will get used in backing) and 3 of quilt cotton acquired. AND STILL NO BORDER so I have to go out again.

Cattitude 09-08-2020 01:43 AM

Rff1010.....I don’t think the extra flannel is a fail as backing is a staple. Well, unless you have another 100 yards of flannel backing in your stash!

as for the quilting cotton......sometimes you need a fix and 3yd is barely a stumble if it tides you over for a while!

joe'smom 09-08-2020 06:48 AM

Irishrose2, you don't have to resist that jellyroll forever, just resist it for a week. And then resist it for another week. Something else might supplant it in your affections if you wait long enough, and then you can resist that for a week, LOL.

Irishrose2 09-08-2020 01:31 PM

I don't have to resist it too long. Several sites are down to just one or two. If i wait, it will be sold out. My big blocks are done - one has a bad point, but I decided enough is enough. It will look hand done this way. On to sashing. I will get this done before my grandson moves to Japan.

rryder 09-08-2020 01:57 PM

Rff1010- Happens to the best of us. Here's a hand back up onto the wagon.

Rob

Irishrose2 09-08-2020 08:11 PM

Rff1010, You did well purchasing that much fabric for $60. Better that $40 plus shipping, for 2 2/3 yds ( a jellyroll).

Rff1010 09-08-2020 11:26 PM

To set is human, to forgive divine. Thank you for the ministry and grace everyone.

Conchalea 09-09-2020 06:53 AM

Irish, those pre cuts certainly are expensive. Karen Brown, on YouTube as Just Get it Done Quilts, worked out a chart showing how much more we pay for each type of precut. As logic would indicate, the more cuts made, such as 2.5" squares, the more expensive they are. Sometimes they're so easy, though!

Iceblossom 09-09-2020 10:53 AM

Had to go to Costco today to get cat food. Bad things happen around here if/when the cat gets cranky!

While there I bought a set of 10 heavy duty banker boxes to start fresh ($25) my stash sorting/storage. I'm hoping that most of the stash will fit, it will sure give me a good visual whatever happens. I also looked at plastic containers but don't really want to use them and my money goes a lot farther with the cardboard. Some of my existing boxes will probably still be used but maybe they can be the potential project boxes. These last for office storage for years, can handle the weight in them and stack nicely up to 4-5 high, but I have shelves. I do have to replace boxes periodically but will probably have at least 5 trouble free years.
https://www.costco.com/Bankers-Box-H...100355478.html

I see this as a long involved project with boxes periodically in the hallway off and on and hope to have the closet cleaned out by the end of the year. I know, that sounds like slacking but there is a lot involved, basically every piece of fabric I have will be touched and potentially ironed/refolded.

Today though, first step is to start a new designated solids box and get that taken care of. Baby steps and doable projects, I like that. I start out with a goal and try to chunk it into 15-30-60 minute increments. 30 minutes is a sitcom, 60 minutes is a CD and if I think I can sustain longer than that, I put in an old movie that I don't actually have to watch. I often sing along to Disney movies like The Little Mermaid.

retiredteacher09 09-09-2020 05:17 PM

Iceblossom: Baby steps and doable projects are a great start. I have purchased some of the Banker’s boxes also. I’m not sure if they are heavy duty or not but they have served my purpose for file folders, fabric, etc. The funny part, though, is I had emptied a couple when I was sorting pictures and memorabilia. I wanted to flatten them and had a hard time figuring how to do it. Lol! It was simple once I reversed the set up process in my brain. 🤷‍♀️

I’m hoping to finish a leader/ender quilt top in a few days. I am also making progress on my newest UFO so fabric is being used.

Conchalea 09-10-2020 04:17 AM

Yesterday I completed Scrappy Stars, a Pat Sloan free pattern. Except for sashing the entire top used stash fabrics. It's about 65" X 80". I put a border I made from sewing strings onto used fabric sheets. I sew many together after I make several string blocks then trim the length to 6", then I cut the entire length in half, ending with double the length in a 3" piece. I had so many that i didnt use 2 halves of the same length & still have a lot left. I also bordered another completed top the same way in July. I will have to buy backing, though, as none of what K & i have between us will work. I've decided to gift this to my 73 year-old cousin who fell 3 weeks ago & broke her hip. She's in a rehab facility for PT, & has had been allowed no visitors since this happened 2 weeks ago. I sent her a pic before I added borders & she loved it, so it will be hers.

oksewglad 09-10-2020 05:14 AM

So good to use those little bits up Conchalea!

Last night started quilting on a quilt completely made from stash..pieced the backing too. Not sure what I will use for binding as there will not be much left from the backing which is used in the top as well.

retiredteacher09 09-10-2020 05:02 PM

Conchalea: Great use of stash. I really like that pattern. It will be a nice gift for your cousin.

oksewglad: Great use of stash for you, too.

I’m looking forward to seeing both of your finishes.

oksewglad 09-10-2020 08:05 PM

I was going to go quilt tonight...a busy afternoon at work left me whipped so I became a couch potato instead...tomorrow another work day so Saturday looking to finish it up.

Conchalea 09-11-2020 03:45 AM

K & I went to the Goodwill in a neighboring town since our town doesnt have 1. We do have a thrift shop, but the owner is in quarantine so it's closed for now. We found several single sheets & 1 set of sheets. I chose a terracotta queen flat for the back of Scrappy Stars, so we'll sandwich that today. We sandwiched a UFO from K's daughter with a back we pieced from a too-small sheet & some large orphan blocks in the same color family. We have greatly reduced the amount of UFOs found in June, using mainly fabric K had. We bought backs for 2 kid quilts, because neither of us had that color scheme. Most of what we found in 2 big closets is now fitting in 1 plastic tub. K's husband & daughter are both thrilled that we are clearing out all these tops & unused fabric & making useful items that will go to help people in need.

Irishrose2 09-11-2020 08:05 AM

Conchalea, How fortunate you are to have a quilting buddy and bless the world at the same time!

Iceblossom 09-11-2020 10:47 AM

Go go Conchalea, so happy you have access to your stash again!

I've gotten my solids box replaced. Took the hand dyes out of the bag I bought them in and off the chair in my bedroom and they pretty well fill up their own box. I had planned to work with those this year, but as I've said, I've had a hard time starting my own projects and after six months of sitting it was time to put them away. Straightened up the green box, I've been playing in there lately and stacked it up along with the batik box that I don't think I'll be adding anything.

And I've set up a designated to be sorted zone. It's quite large...

rryder 09-11-2020 12:55 PM

Good job sorting through things, Iceblossom-- doing a little bit of time really adds up.

Today I received a large box of very nice fabrics from my neighbor across the street. Her mother loved to sew and had good taste in fabrics. I can use just about everything in the box. The question now is, where to put it? I have been using up my stash, but not enough to have room for everything she gave mehttps://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/shock.png. I might need a hand back up onto the wagon, even though I didn't buy any fabric... what do y'all think? Does this count as a fall? it might be as much as 50 or 60 yards..... I haven't checked, just looked at what was there.

Rob

Cattitude 09-11-2020 03:22 PM

rryder...... “Gee thanks neighbour, those are some gorgeous fabrics you want to give me gratis but no thanks, I really don’t want to add to my stash right now”. Words that would never, ever be spoken by any sane quilterhttps://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png
I think you get a pass on this one!

retiredteacher09 09-11-2020 06:49 PM

Conchalea: Way to go in continuing to reduce stash.

rryder: Donations don’t count in my book. Congratulations!

Conchalea 09-12-2020 04:29 AM

Irish & Ice, yes, it's great to have a sewing buddy and have access to my stash again!
Yesterday I used denim from worn out jeans to patch 3 pairs of blue jeans, so a slight reduction there. Since I moved here in late May, my constant sewing has prevented snacking, so I've lost 11 pounds. This means I can fit back into the patched jeans, & I had to take waist tucks in the jeans I bought during my limbo time while most of my clothes were in storage. Another benefit to full-time quilting.
K & I sandwiched 3 quilts yesterday, including my Scrappy Stars, which I began quilting. I'm sewing along all sashing, then I'll try diagonal lines across each 12" block. I'm using my new Baby Lock, which has a big throat. We roll the quilts into what we call anacondas, & so far my fully rolled quilt has fit in the BL throat with no crowding. It's great!

oksewglad 09-12-2020 09:28 AM

Conchalea, do you have a BL Jazz? They have such a nice big throat and work well for quilting. I'm thinking that this will be my next machine. I'm not into embroidery work and just want a good sewing machine.

Conchalea 09-12-2020 12:03 PM

OK, yes, a Jazz II. It sews smoothly & I've certainly been enjoying it!

WMUTeach 09-12-2020 04:55 PM

Time to check in with my moratorium pals. I have been sewing but not much finished. One top ready for layering. I also finished making 16 Chemo bags for the local hospital - three yards of muslin out of the stash. Ta-Da! And today my granddaughter and I made three dog beds for the local ASPCA. She picked out fabric from my stash, I sewed and then she stuffed them with the little clippings and small pieces of fabric and batting that I collect and save. She is not interested in learning to sew but she loves animals and thinks that this is a terrific project. Total removed from my stash is about 4 yards of fabric. Oh, and I started cutting a baby quilt for a last minute baby shower. Hurry, Hurry, Hurry! Jelly roll from stash and back purchased. Nothing in my stash to match in any way. Photos by the end of the week!

Iceblossom 09-13-2020 06:44 AM

Yesterday was the first birthday party for my grandbaby :) Joyous celebration even with the smoke in the air. Imagine twilight at 4:00 with the sun an orange frisbee in the sky.

Next couple of days I'll be doing minimal fabric playing but will be putting the house in order for our trip, we still intend to leave on Wednesday despite smoke and plague. I'm assuming I'll be off-line, but we can also assume I won't be going hog-wild buying fabric (but it's starting to sound like a really good idea...). Jordan Fabrics is still closed to the public, but I ordered fabric from them for my round robin which I've already confessed to, and that was the only fabric related stop originally planned. (don't think two yards at full price is worthy of my birthday exemption but it might be all the fabric I get) Still haven't gotten the RR, but I'm thinking it will go very well indeed with the top.

Hubby will be doing trip preparation things like checking Diners, Drive-ins and Dives to see if we are going past anywhere we want to stop. Not from Guy, but from the cooking shows I think there is BBQ in Vancouver, WA I want to look into. He has Voodoo Doughnuts in Portland on the itinerary even though we won't be going through there at a good time... he wants a maple bacon donut or whatever. It would be better timing on the way back, there is a Eugene location now but I think he wants that original ambiance.
