Teen: Great restraint at JoAnns. I can’t remember when I was there last.

WMUTeach: I’m sad the fabric store closed but you got an awesome deal. Enjoy sewing with your new fabric and working with your new tools.

I think you did extremely well. 50% off LQS fabric- I might have done the same thing.

I also purchased a collection of little odds and ends that I always said I would buy sometime later. Today was later! I have quilting gloves, fabric pen, a 16" square up template and on and on. You get the idea. I feel blessed and thrilled to have some new fabrics to work with this winter all at a beautiful discount. It makes all my efforts to use only my stash this year all worth it.

With your productivity, this will go a long way in getting UFO's and WIP's finished.

WMUTEACH , Congrates on your great buy. I know how sad it is when a good store closes.

The wedding quilt going to Japan. It's much deeper colored than the picture. The pattern was a mystery quilt here on the QB by Paint Me Judy. I added the sashing and cornerstones - it was too confusing without them in my colors. I made most of the blocks five years ago while I was having a new floor laid. I only purchased the black for sashing and the black/white dots to fill in the back.

Beautiful wedding quilt, Irish!

I don’t know about you, but, over the years I have collected small project kits and have never made them. I have a couple of small totes full of them....So, I decided to make one a month... here is the first one. Tiny pillows, of course. Pre-printed fabric with elements of applique and hand embroidery. I actually added the chenille yarn trim on 3 of them from my stash..

WMUTeach 10-23-2020 05:04 PM

Snazzy pillows, Teen. good house decorations or gifts. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/wink.png

Battle Axe 10-24-2020 12:39 AM

You quilters are doing so good and I just fell off the wagon. I have such a hard time resisting gold and silver streaked fabric. I did pass up the fabric store on my way to the bank....well sort of...Once it was closed.

rryder 10-24-2020 04:08 AM

Irishrose- the quilt is gorgeous, they’ll love it!

Teen- those are some cute pillows.

I’ve been stuck in crafting doldrums for the past few weeks. I think it’s because the Big Butterfly UFO is still unfinished. I’ve had more problems with that one quilt than with anything else I've ever done. So I decided to take yet another break from it and try to finish some placemat UFOs. With careful cutting, I had enough fabric in my stash to make the binding for the placemats. Yay!
Now to put it on and stitch it down.

Rob

WMUTeach 10-24-2020 05:51 AM

Rob, some times that is the best strategy. Set the thing aside and plunge into what you know you can do. That feeling of accomplishment often is just the little bit of encouragement to prepare your mind and fingers to attach that challenging piece again with new perspective of "Yes, I can !",

Rff1010 10-24-2020 08:06 AM

Like others Ive been in a bit of crafting doldrums. This school year - teaching with some kids in front and some at home on the computer....its for the birds! And my husband got Quarentine for exposure and surprised me by ripping up some nasty old carpet in my sewing room. Much appreciated and needed to be done - but really put a kink in my activity. Last night I got back to a scrappy project - Lemoyne stars from Missouri Star pattern. Made 2 blocks and went to bed. So very tired....all the time....

If you know a teacher - call. Send virtual hugs and real pizza. And you are a parent - please be understanding.

Teen 10-24-2020 02:04 PM

Rff1010....I feel for you! So many kids will be left behind with this schooling schedule crud despite the best efforts by you and fellow teachers. In my small community, we had a high schooler take his life this week. School cancelled until further notice. Just awful.. my heart breaks... I called school and offered grief counseling so I’ll be busy next week. Trying to put together some zoom group counseling for teens, too. Might be helpful for teachers to take 30 mins a day for a group session to just talk with the kids about whatever they want to talk about. Take the pressure off them for a bit. No easy solutions that’s for sure.

I’m finishing up the applique, finally, on my gazillion HST quilt. Haven’t been able to work on it much with all that is going on. I hope to have a picture next week to share with you.

2020 Fabric Moratorium joiner

I did this last year and have not bought anything new except for a couple of backings. I did not have the right fabric to piece a backing and wanted to have it whole so as to be a second sided quilt. I'm in for 2020 and will be in for 2021, too!

WMUTeach 10-24-2020 04:12 PM

Auj, welcome back. We understanding buying and using what is needed to complete a quilt. On the whole, we are refraining from buying just because we "like it" and trying to use what is on hand in our stash. Welcome, and happy stashing digging. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/boy.gif

retiredteacher09 10-24-2020 05:34 PM

Teen: Adorable finishes! So sorry to hear about the student. Thanks for offering up your skills for the other students.

Battle Axe: Here’s a hand up!

Rob: Sometimes stepping away is necessary. I did that with one of my recent finishes and it ended up going in a totally different direction. Lol!

Rff1010: Thank you for everything you are doing to make school work for the students. My school district is in hybrid mode right now. I’m not sure who or how the students are being taught when they are in their 2 distance learning days though. I do know there are teachers who are teaching only distance learning students. One said she has 26 students online. I decided not to sub for now. It wasn’t an easy decision but it was a smart decision. A couple of my teacher friends told me last month that I made the right decision to stay away for now. The online teacher verified that too. I know teachers are working harder now than ever but they know it needs to be done but I can’t even imagine how any of you can stay awake after work.

Auj: Welcome back!

Another finished top. I started out by looking for something to go with the blue tree repeat fabric. I had about 42” of it so decided to cut it into rows for horizontal sashing. The organization of my stash over the summer came in useful because I knew where to find the animal squares and then I looked in my realistic animal stash and found the other prints. It took some time to get the top made but I’m happy with the outcome. 69.5” by 80”

WMUTeach 10-25-2020 04:53 PM

Good use of your stash Retiredteacher, I would not have thought of splitting the trees fabric into rows but it certainly works with all of your other pieces. Another fine finish.

Rff1010 10-25-2020 05:45 PM

RetiredTeacher- that's lovely work and a goodly size. Somebody's going to be cozy this winter!

Teen 10-25-2020 07:06 PM

Great finish, retiredteach... creative use for that mountain fabric. Looks cool..

rryder 10-26-2020 02:05 AM

Good job working out the placement of the animal squares and use of the tree fabric between. Nice finish, Retiredteach!

Rob

joe'smom 10-26-2020 09:27 AM

retiredteacher, that turned out great!

retiredteacher09 10-26-2020 06:42 PM

Thank you for the compliments. I’m working on another top with the remaining blue tree strips and more realistic animal fabric. After I finish this top, it will be back to sewing pre-cut squares from my church group along with finishing a couple UFO tops.

Synnove 10-28-2020 09:28 AM

Thanks for the invite!

Hi y'all! I would like to hop on board with the rest of you even though it's wayyy late in 2020! I have been whittling down my stash throughout the year with increased quilt making because of the lockdown . . . does that count as destashing? https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png I went on such a fabric buying binge the end of last year, being snagged both by black Friday sales and by end of year sales online that I really have got to stop! Well, ok, I did also buy yardage for the borders for the Bonnie Hunter Star Struck quilt I'm finishing up. It's in autumn colors -- I'm always inspired by the beautiful leaf colors at this time of year. I'm glad to join with the rest of you who "shop the stash."

Conchalea 10-28-2020 10:41 AM

Welcome, Synnove! I have not set a good example for Moratorium members. *shame on me* two weeks ago K & I went to this county's quilt shop. She bought fabric to make an art quilt, while I bought some backing for my RWB quilt plus a fall panel. I've been sewing on the panel. The next week, we went to Joann's where I bought more blue & red fabric for the RWB. Today, I added to my jump off the wagon, because Pat Sloan showed a holiday tree panel. I bought 2 of those for me, 1 for K, plus a little coordinating fabric. K called me later to enthuse about a sale at a fabric store. I'm trying to resist even looking. Not sure I'll be able to resist the siren call.

Teen 10-28-2020 02:09 PM

Welcome, Synnove!! Glad you joined us. Those Black Friday sales are killers but with the Virus, it seems like quilt shops are treating every other weekend as a “huge” sale so my emails are getting ridiculous and the temptation never ends. We are here to cheer you on!!

Conchalea...I saw that Christmas tree pattern, too...so cute...but I have plenty of Christmas stash to make one so that is what I am doing. I love Pat! Stay strong!!

i have a lot of the FQ bundle left from my recent quilt project so I am going to make a couple of more quilts to finish it up. I just watched a tutorial from Lori Holt I’m going to use as one pattern. Super quick and easy...

WMUTeach 10-28-2020 06:19 PM

I am working on the Christmas tree from Pat Sloan right now! I laid it out with my stash of Christmas 2.5 squares but ended up using a holiday jelly roll I have had for a couple of years. The pattern is fast, easy and can be done in 2.5 squares or 5" charms. I will post a photo of a finish in a day or two.

Here is the link to both mini charm and 5" charm trees pattern. https://www.ilovetomakequilts.com/charming-trees.html

Baby quilt from GGGrandpa's shirts

1 Attachment(s)
Strictly improv piecing, this little quilt is ready to send off to the new baby in the family. MrOk's great niece had a baby boy last month. I picked out some of his dad's shirts to make this little dinosaur quilt. I also used some neutrals and farm related fabrics as he was a farmer. He always read the newspaper so added some newsprint. The dinosaur was made from a shirt sleeve with a pearl button that makes the dino's eye. The back is a gray flannel plaid; binding some dark plaid flannel gifted from some one. Again no yardage was harmed in the making of this quilt.

Oh and I used my new pole hanger in the basement to hang the quilt from.

rryder 10-29-2020 02:26 AM

Love the dinosaur quilt, oksewglad!

I love this quilt, Ok!!! And your words will stick with me when pondering whether or not to buy more fabric, haha.

Panchita 10-29-2020 06:47 AM

That's a wonderful dinosaur quilt oksewglad! And I love the history behind it too, makes it extra special.

:-)

Irishrose2 10-29-2020 07:57 AM

OK, your dinosaur quilt is darling.

Karamarie 10-29-2020 12:19 PM

I was doing so good until someone gave me 3 totes of fabric a month ago. I took what I thought I might use and passed on the rest to another quilter. It was good fabric but at 75 I am not taking on a lot of big projects. Right now I am making a black and white quilt with a burgundy piece in the center in every other block. No pattern just sewing strips together to make blocks and turning each block as I put together. I don't know how I ever acquired so many black and white pieces of fabric but you all know how it goes.

petthefabric 10-29-2020 12:28 PM

Just pulled small pieces of greens to make a quilt. Have a book and pattern I've been wanting to try. The green area is showing empty spots. After 4 yrs of this-I'm making progress.

Have two quilt tops that need backs. Waiting for a planned trip to Fresno to shop.

At a new-to-me friends home, noticed every exterior area of every room had stuff, covered in dust. It was hard to find enough space to have 10 for lunch. Reminded me to not accumulate stuff. Also, DD and SIL are moving across the nation and are showing pictures of getting ready. Last one was miss-matched socks. Just another reminder, I don't need all this stuff and sometimes it gets in the way of what I want to do.

The trees are beautiful red/yellow/fall.

retiredteacher09 10-29-2020 04:36 PM

oksewglad: Precious quilt for the new baby. My husband had pearl snaps on some of his western shirts. Brought back a wonderful memory when you mentioned a pearl button.

Karamarie: I have a lot of black and white fabric too and mostly through donations to my church group that somehow was put in bags for me to use. Lol!

petthefabric: Way to go with an empty spot in the greens!

Irishrose2 10-29-2020 04:46 PM

I have my black and whites collected for a wedding quilt. I'm trying to work the ombre jelly roll into it. I paid enough for it that I need to use it right away. I think I have a pattern worked out, but for once, I will make just one bock before I cut too much.

I cut out a baby quilt today. I've used this pattern so much, I'm getting bored with it. New colors for me - very soft gray and soft aqua.

Conchalea 10-30-2020 06:03 AM

Pet, I think we all need to be reminded that "stuff" we don't use (or need) is just a collector of dust. I moved in May & had to pack up my house, a hugely daunting task. I did most of it myself, & gave away huge amounts of clothes, craft supplies (which I gave to various schools) & I still have too much. I do not consider fabric in that group, but...
I want only objects that please me, or I can use, to be in my space. Now to find a way to use some gifted fabric in my collection.

petthefabric 10-30-2020 06:53 AM

Especially this time of year, in low humidity areas of the nation and forest fires raging-smoky air, dust is a real issue. We even have air purifiers going 24/7. Anything extra (stuff), is extra work dusting. My studio reminds me I'm an artist, not a house keeper. So keep artist stuff that is contributing to my enjoyment and developement. I see a stack of CD's, not used in years....dust collector-out of my life!

petthefabric 10-30-2020 06:55 AM

They're in the trash and where they were is marked by accumulated dust. Made a housekeeper issue-once over and it's done.
