WMUTeach, love the autumn vibe on that one! And the blocks are really interesting, does it have a name? Great job!

Ta-Da! This evening I finished an exchange block quilt from 2011. I used fabric from my stash for the backing, the batting and the sashing. I didn't calculate the yardage but I will guess about two and a half yards of backing/sashing. A small amount, but it is no longer in my stash!

oksewglad, Autumn vibe, hum. Since this one started as a UFO, perhaps it is just cleaning up last year's leaves rather than looking ahead to this year's. Tee-Hee-Hee! Thank you for all the kind comments. |
WMUteach, I love your use of stash! Great points on the blocks.
I found a huge piece of pale blue fabric in the box gifted to me. I hope to use it to back 1 or 2 of the UFOs found st my friend's house. We didnt sew on those tops for the last 3 days, so I've been sewing on pieces inspired by a quilt made by my grandmother or her mother. It has butterflies of different fabrics in squares. Sadly the entire quilt is threadbare with the colors faded to almost nothing. Her hand stitching in black is still visible. I traced 1 butterfly & made freezer paper templates. I cut 28 butterflies from a variety of floral fabric also gifted to me. I'm machine-sewing them to neutral fabric squares (part of the gifted fabric). I'll intersperse squares of bright fabric, all stash, next to the butterfly squares. I've cut 28 bright fabrics, 28 neutral fabrics, & this quilt should end up 7 X 8 blocks, 75.5" X 84" without borders. I may add borders to the sides. Fabric on hand will decide that for me. My machine has a blanket stitch, very similar to that on the original, so I'm sewing them all with that. I'm thinking of using the original as batting, if it has enough structure. Thoughts on this plan? |
Like your plan to make a replica of the butterfly quilt. I have no experience with reusing batting from a previous quilt. Much would depend on its quality and condition I guess. Waiting for a photo or at least an in progress photo.

Finally, permission to speak up.
I scavenge in Chicago's alleys. I don't go out to scavenge, but I bike and walk through them and they're a special place if you're not worried about looking dignified. Furniture, clothes, books, appliances, office supplies. Two relevant scavenges: Leather from perfectly good couches and, here's the stash, the entire stock of a closed bridal boutique. I got perhaps a quarter acre of lace, damask, and some other rich-looking stuff I can't identify. Bolts and rolls of it. Along with a lot of non-bridal prints and knits, etc. Okay, I feel better now. |
Conchalea..I have resued batting. The previous quilt was a tied quilt so easy to snip the ties. This was a polyester batting, too. Actually it works pretty good in a denim quilt as it's light without adding too much weight to the quilt. Also sandwiching it in a minky backed quilt works well for the same reason.
Doug vH...what a haul; nothing wrong with keeping usable items out of the landfills! I see you are a "newbie'...welcome to the board. |
My Hope's to use the original quilt as batting fell.apart today, literally. The quilt stank after being stored who knows how long in unknown conditions, so I tried washing it. I felt I had little to lose, since the fabric was falling apart anyway. It fell the rest of the way apart in the dryer. So i have found memories of it on my bed as a child, & now I'm making a new one. I'll post pictures of the old & the new in a different post.

Conchalea- I'm so sorry for your loss! But it lived a good life.
WMUTeach- that is really pretty! |

Welcome, Doug! Man, you got quite the stash and it sounds like it was quality stuff. Looking forward to see what you create with the goodies....because you are using it,right? Lol...Keep safe while scavenging! |

I am waiting for triangle paper I ordered to start my King bed quilt so I'm not starting anything new. I've kitted up another quilt, though, with stash and that felt good. |
Hola Teen,
Using that bridal stash is the third item on my list. I actually got a heavy duty machine (White Rotary 77) and I'm learning to sew to use scavenged leather from couches in Chicago alleys. I bought my first rock amp in decades and the amp cover was a cheezy, ill-fitting piece of vinyl. I thought I could do way better with the great upholstery leather. Meanwhile, I have a lifetime of saved memorabilia fabric that I've always wanted to quilt. So this forum is my spirit guide. See you around the threads. Doug |
You go Doug, and stay here with us!
I have become quite the thrift store shopper, at first through necessity but then I found I could find all sorts of things for free or close to it. It's just amazing first what companies want for new stuff, and then what people throw/give away... Seattle is a relatively wealthy area and I'm just pleased to pick among the discards of the rich folk. I quit almost all new fabric buying a long time ago, but thrift stores are my problem area. Semi-fortunately for me, with Covid precautions, thrift stores were closed months ago and are just now opening up again so I've had months of very little temptation and zero purchases. A lot of people found time to clean out their closets and such, but the thrift stores were closed and you couldn't even throw things away, because the trash truck drivers were out solo instead of having a helper so the weight limits and other restrictions meant nothing extra could go. |
I've been cutting my RWB scraps to use in a couple of QOV. I have enough squares cut and sewn to put sashing around. I will have to get a neutral tomorrow when I'm at work. I also have enough 2" strips cut to sew a rail fence quilt..I was planning on putting a border on it, but then maybe I have enough to make a bigger quilt. Also have pieces cut to make a strippy quilt from the RWB fabrics. I haven't checked stash to see if I have enough of a suitable piece to use for unpieced strips.

Doug is awesome! (Cheering section!)
Meanwhile I have spent $90 recently at LQS solely to give them some cash. So much pretty fabric... .. |

I posted this same quilt on the Birthday Swap thread, but It also fits here. All materials are from my stash: Top, batting and backing. It is super easy and uses up about 6 yards of fabric. I plan on making it again only bigger and in greens and yellows. If you are a newbie, each step for this mystery quilt has lots of clear photos and accurate directions to guild you along. A good teacher. The pattern can be found at https://www.daysfilledwithjoy.com/20...a-long-step-1/
|
WMUTeach, I like the quilt - colors and pattern both.
|
I like it a lot. I think it could be strip pieced as well to make it go faster. What's the final size in your top?
|
Pretty top, WMU teach. Makes me want to dig into my stash and start something new...

Oooo, thanks for the idea WMUTeach, I have more blues than any other color in my stash and recently found a nice piece of pale that might be just perfect for the background.... also just a nice setting option for using a large scale print in the center instead of the pieces, those little squares on point in the cornerstones really makes it interesting.
|
WMUTeach: Very pretty quilt. Thanks for sharing the link. I need to save this idea.
Iceblossom: I like the idea of a single block in the center. I have lots of 6.5” squares cut that could be used in the center. It would be a great way to use up 2.5” squares sitting in a drawer too. |

Approx 40 x 56 gift for a friends new grandbaby. 100% from stash - including the batting (seriously - its a jigsaw puzzle in there)
I used the envelope / inside out method from Alana Crafts YouTube channel. Really happy with the results. Nickname: fastest baby baby quilt in the west. 2 hrs to piece top and about 4 to quilt and finish. Batting took longer so I'm not counting that time. I have more of all 4 fabrics so I might make another "spare" to have around. Are spare baby quilts a thing?? |
Cute fabrics Rff. Spare baby quilts are a good thing. I always have requests when none are in hand
|
Rff1010: Very nice! Great job using only stash.
|
Because the batting is a jig zaw, I think it needs more quilting. Wonderful baby quilt.
|
A cute quick quilt,Rff1010!
I just figured out stash fabric for the QOV quilt I'm making...1 3/4 yards plus the 1/2 yd for binding and will use 2 3/4 yards new fabric in sashes and border. Onward to the next one soon. I will have used almost 3 yards of stash plus the binding and will need to get 1 yard for the border. |
First, my good news. I used 1 yard of stash fabric & 1 of stash batting for a baby quilt. The top & binding is from 2 jelly rolls I bought at the start of lockdown. All my stash was in storage at that time.
Now for the confession portion. Since I have the cowboy themed quilt simmering in my mind, today's ad from Jordan fabrics caught my eye. Perfect colors, perfect prints, so I ordered a layer cake ( my first ever) & a jelly roll. The fabrics I already have are mostly muted browns, blues, & sand. This fabric will be used in my quilt, so won't go into stash. But at the same time, I worked on my butterfly quilt yesterday. All the fabric in it is from stash. I sewed sashing & trimmed some blocks yesterday. I have 28 butterflies appliqued on neutrals, & 28 bright squares to alternate between them. I'll sew black outlines on the butterflies & add borders. All from stash. |
Good going, Conchalea. I'm glad to hear that the cowboy theme is still working through your mind and you found what was needed, even if you had to buy some of it. You had "prevented from using stash" exemptions.
I really like the layer cake size, that is the same as my 10" swapping squares and is quite useful/workable. My round robin project arrived yesterday, this is Row 2 if you don't count the center. I'll be using all stash but the amount is tiny, is only 25" square or so now and I'll be putting on ~6 inches. Still, it's been fun to go pull the pieces and some of them were washed for the first time making them more usable for the future. |
Way to go Ladies on using stash.
Now that my studio is more cleaned out, i felt I could take a breath and start a new quilt. I've been collecting pictures of ez quilts to give for comfort quilts. So, I've got one layed out on the floor (ran out of design walls) that'll use ~5yds. Came out so nice, I've pulled another group to do the same quilt. Feels good, and all because I clean up my studio. Long ago lost tract of yardage used this year. |
WMUteach....I really like your blue quilt. Great way to use 2 1/2 sq. I'm going to save that.
Rff...cute baby quilt...I try to have a couple of baby quilts on hand...so quick and easy to do. I have a couple of patterns that I typically use unless baby is family...if family, I spend a bit more time on design. I have 2 lap quilts that I've set aside for same purposes. I'm working on my king quilt with the the gazillion HST's. That HST paper is working great so it's coming together pretty quickly.. Been able to pull from stash the colors I needed...so far so good. |

Iceblossom, thanks! I liked your western fabrics, they just didn't quite fit the colors of the fabrics I already have.
Here is the baby quilt I finished earlier this week. I used the walking foot for triangles in the square blocks. I thought it would be a nice contrast. After practicing swirls on a pillow top, I FMQ'd swirls on the red borders. Getting that muscle memory imprinted right before working on the quilt really helped my swirls. All are free of eyelashes! I used super magnets to hold the quilt on my fridge. |

Update on the butterfly quilt. I have all 28 butterflies appliqued on the neutral squares & sashing attached. Today I started putting black highlights on the butterflies. Depending on how many photos I can attach, I may have some of my grandmother's original quilt. The fabric had faded to near-white, in the few places where it hadn't worn all the way through. It really was beyond saving.
|
nice log cabin and quilting, Conchalea! And, that butterfly quilt is going to be amazing. Sorry about your grandmother's quilt, though it sounds like it had a great life and was well loved.

Conchalea....your Quilting looks fantastic on the log cabin. Well done! And, butterfly quilt looks so vintage. Love it! So so cute...
|
Conchalea: That’s an awesome baby quilt! The quilting is great too. I enjoy hearing about your progress on the butterflies. I think I may have a block or 2 of butterflies that my DMIL made that didn’t make it in a quilt.
