Since I finished my RWB last week, K & I needed another project. We have many strings & string blocks & found some interesting patterns online. We've decided to make wheelchair lap blankets for our town's nursing home. K called them today to see if they want them, & how many they need. Yes, they do want them, so we have an outlet for our projects! The number of wheelchair bound residents amazed us. 11 men & 24 women. Keep in mind this is a tiny community in a county with about 18,000 total residents. We don't have the only nursing home in our county. We didn't ask how many people in total live there. We need to get busy making string quilts.

Worthy endeavor, Conchalea!! They will so appreciate and make use of those. String quilts come together quickly and perfect pattern for this...have fun..

I received an email from Moda showing off their new fabric line Freya and I fell in love! Flash forward, two days later Green Fairy Quilts offered a sale on all FQ bundles including this new collection...I just couldn’t resist. (Sigh)

Hey all, I just posted a pic of my February Color Block quilt in the pics section:
https://www.quiltingboard.com/pictur...ml#post8466950 It's all from scraps except for the backing which was yardage, but all came from my stash- Yay! Take a look if you get a chance. Thanks, Rob |
Conchalea, what a great project!
Rob, your quilt looks great and the quilting is wonderful. I signed up to download the color block patterns, but I've found the website kind of confusing. |
Joe's Mom- Thanks. The patterns are on the left side of the screen when you sign in. In order to download the patterns, you have to click on the pattern on the left side of the screen, that will bring up the pattern on the right, then you need to go all the way to the bottom of the pattern and click on the link that says download, otherwise it will download what you see on the screen and when you go to print you'll end up with the stuff on the left instead of just the pattern. Hope that helps.

looks modern. nice

Conchalea: An awesome project! I look forward to pictures as K and you finish each pattern.
jmoore: I saw that fabric line on GeDesigns Tipsy Tuesday tonight. 🙂. Pretty! Rob: Absolutely beautiful! Your quilting is wonderful. joe’smom: The Color Blocks patterns are fun. |
After x years of downsizing, the shelves have some space. So while waiting for a friend, started emptying boxes and putting on the shelves. Found flannel lg enough for a back. So pulled black/white/yellow to match. It's just a little space on the top of the shelves getting emptied but it makes it feel like it fits into the plan, rather than overwhelming the system. Each one feels like I'm getting somewhere.

Lovely color block quilt, Rob. I like the concept of these quilts but you took it to a more "planned" scrappy making your quilt out of the ordinary. Quilting is of course exquisite.
|
Two apron panels were found in the boxes. A soft canvas was found easily for one of them, and it's nearly finished. The second just wasn't playing happily with anything found so far. Dug through another box and, yes!, found a match. So they'll both be finished by tonight. Also made an 18" wide pass on LA that's 104" long. I think 4 more will finish that. What a grand feeling!

Finished the 2 aprons. They're both reversible and pockets on one side. Pictured is the most interesting side. Since daughter has problems with neck with halter type straps they cross in the back.
Attachment 632166 One says Paris Forever. The apron is folded back to fit into the picture. The words are not cut off. The other is Christmas Greetings. She's as tall as I am, so I think the length will be fine. |
petthefabric: You are making awesome progress! I like those aprons.
|
Thanks everyone!
petthefabric- those aprons look great! Rob |
K & I have put together 3 wheelchair lap quilt tops, all from stash! Each was made from the string blocks we've been making in between other projects. I'm almost finished with a 4th, also with string blocks. Yep, we had that many string blocks. I think there are enough of them for a 5th top! It's good we found a way to use them that will help others. I'm sure K has enough fabric for backs for any tops we make. She has a ton of fabric.

Well my 2020 temperature quilt is finished, 366 flying geese blocks all made from scraps, sashing/ border all stash ( Jinny Beyer border print) and even the backing from stash ( just barely made it with the backing- 3 1/2 yards of 108” wide backing fabric.
I also today quilted a kids quilt with stash fabric backing and used the last of my 40 yard roll of batting today. there is ( breathing room) on my shelves as I continue using what I have. Between the moratorium and the UFO challenge I’m making great progress this year. the kitten LOVES the temperature quilt! It is Huge! 108” x 118” - I really didn’t expect it to get so big. Couldn’t get good pictures today |
ckcowl; your inspector is fabulous. Love the quilt.
|
Conchalea: That is a lot of string blocks! A great project and I’m sure very welcomed by the residents.
ckcowl: Wow! Lots of Flying Geese! Congratulations on finishing it. Your kitty is adorable. |

My son has been sewing a lot and yesterday remembered he missed one of the ( nieces) for a quilt, so he came up with a plan - I asked if he was running low on any colors—- and packaged up 2 new boxes of fabric for him- about 15 more yards GONE from my shelves., yea!
he also mentioned he was looking at a 10* wedge ruler and thinks he wants one— well, ok- I happen to have one, and the circle quilts book and a couple other patterns that use it, all still brand new- the ruler has never been out of its package and I bought it about 4 years ago- time for it to find a ( useful home) so another package on the way and a space emptied on the book shelf he had to send me a picture of his ( new safety gear) after breaking a needle that flew toward his face. he is really enjoying this creative journey |

This is Ben’s plan for the new quilt- for an 8 year old who loves unicorns. He free hand drew the unicorn then sent me the picture in a text asking if it looked enough like one— he amazes me!
|
ckowl; he amazes me too. Sometimes people who are new to the descipline can be very creative.

right, because they aren’t listening to the ( quilt police rules) they dive in and do what appeals to them. He loves playing with illusions and is always trying new things. |
Coffee mug and t-shirt for us:

ckcowl: Awesome quilts and designs by your son! Great way to reduce your stash also.
Julienm1: Those are cute mugs and shirts. |
What fun to share artistic talents with the next generation!
|
Ckcowl- wow! Love all the quilts he’s done. So cool that you can share quilting and your fabric stash with him!
Rob |
Your son is doing great work, ckcowl. How wonderful that you can share the love of quilting with him!

Four lap quilts were delivered to the nursing home yesterday, and 2 more were completed today. That's at least 12 yards out of our stash! We added to it today by purchasing many sheets at a thrift store, but I see most of them going into these lap quilts.

Conchalea: K and you have been doing a great job of using your stash.
I jumped off the train a couple of times recently. 11.4 yards. I wanted some plain navy but my LQS only had a couple bolts of dark navy grunge type. I bought the rest of both bolts and then decided I liked one better than the other for a current project and was able to order more from one of the LQS’s other locations. It’s so hard to find a nice navy but they are great blenders. Thankfully, I pre-washed the first purchase because 3 loads later, 6 Color Catchers, and 2 extra rinses, the Odor Catchers were finally a light gray. |

I have been tempted so badly today to purchase some unneeded fabrics. I went to 2 different sites and I could 'smell' the fresh fabrics in my mind. Instead I went into my stash and found one fabric that will work for what I want to do for now. I have bought only WOW that I needed for staple for just about every quilt I make. I purchased 15 yards and that should last the rest of the year, maybe longer.

oksewglad: Yes to pre-washing.
juliasb: Here’s a hand up. We need those fabric staples. I finished my Color Block Quilt Along top but made it longer. It’s 60” by 80” and will be finished by my church group. Everything was found in my stash. . |
retired; nice.
|
That looks great, Connie. Good use of stash.
juliasb- I keep looking at fabrics on-line, too. I am in need of WOW and can always use black fabric for my stash, and also wide backing. I may break down and buy some WOW for the next colorblock quilt unless I find enough of something in stash that will work for the background. I’ve promised myself a trip to my LQS 2 weeks after my 2nd vaccination so I’m going to wait on blacks until the 3rd week of April. But, I also plan to visit their remnant bins since they always have lots of batiks- I think I’m going to have to claim a Covid exemption when I visit my LQS! Rob |
Rob, thank you for the smile this morning. 😆
Connie, nice finish on your March color block quilt...another great use of your stash. With all of the Spring collections being released it is difficult to avoid purchasing some of these beautiful new fabrics.😏 |
Well done, Connie. I'm enjoying seeing what you are all doing with DB block inspirations.
My next big mini project is the OhMyGosh quilt which I will pull from my sized bins. https://www.generations-quilt-patter...osh-quilt.html I have all the light 2' squares cut out and am working on cutting also from 2" the HST/square needed for the Shoofly part of the block. I am sewing with 1" strips to create the 4P and 9P blocks. I did some quick figuring and discovered that I will be using 9+ yards in the blocks. If I am lucky I can get the borders/biinding from my stash as well which would be another 1.66 yards..more if I make outer border a little wider. Inch by inch my quilt will grow... |
Went to my go-to-fabric shops on line today...sigh...looked, pretended to fondle...and clicked off without buying. sigh
|
Rob: Maybe my recent purchases should be under COVID celebrations also. 🙂. Premature purchases since my second dose isn’t until the 30th. 🤷♀️
oksewglad: That’s a lot of small blocks but will be a great use of yardage. julienm1: 🙂 I have 3 more long seams on a top to sew on a project started a year ago tomorrow. At least, I kept it out of UFO land since I got it this far. This is one that I will finish for myself once I get my machine back from the machine doctor. |
