Another Challenge - caution, aggressive!

I just saw another virtual quilting weekend being offered, to get us going on our UFO's. Great idea! I am suggesting another challenge. You know all of those blocks we tag, and bookmark and post-a-note in a book or magazine? Let's make a sampler quilt (lap or what ever size you need - depending on MANY you have put on your to do list - haha) out of those tags. Most of the blocks I have tagged are finished at 12 inches. I bet I have at least 45-50 blocks on my to do list. By using a color pallet of - oh,say no more than 8 fabrics - I bet that I can get an exceptionally nice quilt out of it. Even if the blocks are larger or smaller, I am pretty good at making adjustments to make it a 12 inch block. I do encourage posting of pics, even though I am so very challenged at this. Maybe my friend GagaSmith can help me with that. What do you say? The challenge will be to get your steam on and actually MAKE all those blocks you have been promising to do!

sewbizgirl 02-13-2015 06:25 AM

This sounds like a great idea. I can't wait to see what you come up with!

GingerK 02-13-2015 06:33 AM

I had to smile a bit when I read your post. I am about to attach the final piece of border to a sampler quilt that I have been working on for waaaaaay to long. It just kept getting pushed aside. It is king size with 56 unique 12 inch blocks and a paper pieced border (that took much too much time but looks fabulous). I don't think I want to do another sampler quilt right now (or you could say that I was the first to finish!) This puppy is BIG and I need help to get a proper pic so can't post one right now.

You have a great idea tho. I had a lot of fun, choosing the block designs and trying new techniques. Hope you get a bunch of people interested.

Homespun 02-13-2015 06:37 AM

Sounds good to me!

HillCountryGal 02-13-2015 06:41 AM

GingerK, I agree, you are the first to finish. :o

musicaljan 02-13-2015 11:10 AM

I've had this exact same idea! Then I would have a quilt of all the blocks I loved! Now I just need to start. =D

happylab 02-14-2015 01:59 AM

I'm in, I have a sampler quilt I need to finish doing 8-12 blocks and put together. Would this count?

Deb watkins 02-14-2015 05:21 AM

It will! I am starting my own today - last night looked at the block patterns to see which one(s) I want to start this weekend. The problem I can see already is .......I am going to keep this or give it as a gift to a co-worker who is retiring!

meanmom 02-14-2015 06:27 AM

Sounds like a good idea. I keep thinking I should do something with all the patterns I have pinned on Pinterest. Unfortunately I have several projects that I need to get finished quickly. I decided a few days ago to make a wall hanging for my DH for his birthday which is in a week. He has always loved Mail Pouch tobacco barns. I gave him a picture 30 years ago. During a remodel of his shop it got thrown away. Yesterday while we were in the car he was telling me he needs a new one. I have most of it pieced and fused. I am still working out the details and need borders and quilting. I will follow this thread to see all of the pretty projects.

Please tell us about the Mail Pouch tobacco barns. Pictures?

Great idea....I have 12 months of UFO planned for 2015 (even finished January's on Feb 2nd and am well on way for Fenruary) I will put an "*" on the list that says. Start new UFO making the blocks you mentioned --- kind of like a BOM of new blocks.

Great idea, thanks :)

Deb watkins 02-15-2015 01:31 PM

Great thought Judy, a NEW block of the month with YOUR OWN blocks! I guess the challenge would be to do one or two a week. Think of doing them on the weekend when there may be a bit more time (haha)

gramquilter2 02-16-2015 04:52 PM

This is such a good idea will be waiting for pictures of everyone's blocks and finished quilt. I have mine started because I do make a block that I like when I see it. Guess mine will end up a scrappy quilt.

ontheriver 02-16-2015 05:31 PM

Great idea, I'm in, but since I'm still trying to use up scraps, that's what I'll be using.

ontheriver 02-16-2015 05:37 PM

I forgot to add that for those of us who collect the Quiltmakers 100 quilt block series this is a good opportunity to try many of the blocks. If memory serves they are all 12 inch.

AngeliaNR 02-16-2015 07:13 PM

Sounds like fun--I'll try to fit it in. I have so many I'd like to try that my quilt might cover my state!

bee3 02-18-2015 10:23 AM

I love this idea! I was just thinking of doing something like this too! Thanks for bringing up the challenge!

I started a sampler quilt in January, choosing blocks from the book Bella Bella Sampler Quilts by Norah McMeeking. THis is my first time doing serious paper piecing and I have ripped out a lot of seams! Here is the latest one, a hexagon star block along with the other 4 blocks I've done. Hope this fits with the spirit of the challenge since several of these have been skills building for me!

givio 02-21-2015 04:51 PM

RebeccaS, that's going to be reeeally cool.

lynnie 02-21-2015 04:58 PM

love those stars and the shades of gold

retiredteacher09 02-22-2015 11:21 AM

Great idea! I was planning to go through more of my bookmarked patterns in a few weeks. This would give me a purpose to organize them. I only have a few magazines but lots of things marked on my computer.

Thanks for the challenge!

Connie

This is going to be pretty

happylab 03-15-2015 04:39 PM

Almost had this top together, (wrong). I managed to mix up the blocks. So I took 1/2 of it out and repositioned the blocks correctely. Then I decided I did not like 2 of the blocks, so will do 2 more blocks and put it back together. Today I decided to work on another project, (to give me thinking time for the other quilt). At least I'm making progress on something.

kathryn7887 04-17-2015 03:00 PM

Rebecca so pretty. can't wait to see them all done.

What a great idea. I would have to live forever to make all the quilts I have saved patterns for. Going to start really sorting through them and start a sampler quilt.

judy363905 06-24-2015 01:49 PM

Just wondering if anyone has made a "new to you" block pattern. I look at various block patterns.. Complicated one to me...but have not taken up the challenge yet. :). Would love to see photos of any new block made

I'm working on a lightening Block quilt for a friend and a Jacob's ladder block for another quilt. Both are 1/2 done. I'll post pic as I progress.

45 or 50 blocks? Let's figure 48, which is 6 blocks by 8 blocks. If they are 12" finished, with no sashing, you'll have a quilt 72" BY 96". Add borders, and YES, that is a reasonable sized quilt!!! But I like to set off sampler blocks with a unifying sashing, so maybe I'll end up with another monster...did someone whisper UFO?

Quilting Cat...your math skills show through...please post photos for us to see your progress.

Checking in on my progress --- I finished the rectangle cornerstones, have half of the leaf rectangles completed...this has been fun learning to construct these units. I plan to use a medium grey for the sashing strips. The designer is Mary J. Burns and it is called Shakespeare's Leaves :)

happylab 07-25-2015 03:14 PM

Judy, I like the leaf layout.

I have completed my 3 quilt tops I was working on. My orange and tourquise has come back from the quilter's. She did a outstanding job. I just need to complete the binding and I will post pics. I exchange and gave her my two other quilts. Jacob ladder in Kansas Trouble fabric and ______ lightening block in blue and pink and white fabric. I'm looking forward to all projects being done. All projects will go out to three different friends. So close.

Now I'm going to start on a doll quilt for my sister and work on Sue

You are doing a great job of finishing up things! I have several things almost done - but I am so bad at posting pictures. Keep up the good work!

Great quilt. I have always liked tans and navy and the splash of red. I had not check this link for a while. My Shakespears Leaves top is ready to be sandwiches. I was going along quite well and on Aug 20th it was 115 degrees here in Phoenix and I found my self in the hospital with pneumonia. I am having a slow recovery and my sister and brother-in- laws anniversary quilt will not be finished by September 20. :(. My target is Before Halloween, have to see how thing progress
