Yes!!! I was wishing today was "make 48 blocks and be done"... I was sadly disappointed... ha

lora3677 12-07-2018 11:31 AM

quiltsRfun: They aren't my fave either... so I've decided to cut myself some slack and let them just be "okay" and not strive for "fantastic!"... It's only part 3 and I'm already questioning what I have signed up for... hoping the next 2 weeks are a bit easier.. lots of holiday "stuff" going on.

After 3 years I finally finished putting my Allietare blocks together into a top. I did two more Bonnie mysteries after that one and completed them. Just couldn't seem to get my interest up to finish the Allietare. I so hate doing on point setting, especially with a quilt that big. My design wall isn't big enough so I ran into all kinds of trouble. It's always confusing! But today it's a Top. Hooray!

gosh I just love looking at everyone's neutrals! I did my Allietare as a long twin. I did the centers in strings and wasn't mad about how they came out. The journey is always fun though.

I've got 20 chevrons and 38 bonus squares finished. One year we had more chevrons only going the other way for one of the clues.

wishfulthinking 12-07-2018 02:18 PM

It took me three practice chevron units to get one going in the right direction. Gonna be a long week!

Happiness is knowing you have the described tools somewhere and finding them before you start the clue!!!!

betthequilter 12-07-2018 02:34 PM

I just started following Bonnie Hunter about 6 months ago and I know I will never make one of her mystery quilts even though I admire anyone who would. In an earlier post lora3677 mentioned "lots of holiday stuff going on". My question is: why does Bonnie Hunter start a mystery quilt this time of year? It seems to me that January would be a great time.

betthequilter - Bonnie starts this now because many people don't have family and spend the holidays alone. This gives them something to look forward to. A lot of people also only make 1/2 or 1/4 of the clues so they end up with a small quilt or table topper. In Bonnie's video with Holly from String & Story she mentioned if it's too hectic to do all the units just do 12 each week. That gives you an idea of what your block will look like after the reveal and give you practice making the units.

Sewbizgirl, your Allietare is beautiful!

So - Clue #3 is similar to the sashing unit in On Ringo Lake but no mirror image - wasn't a fan of that sashing so I'm wondering how and where these Half Chevrons will be used. I am debating skipping this clue and seeing if, after the reveal, I can figure out a way to make them with less seams.
I might go ahead & make the Bonus units - those are really, really small. :(

Does anyone else think this will be another "on point" setting?

Sounds like me. Allietare is my favorite mystery but the top is still not complete. I’ve also done two more BH mysteries (finished the tops) but decided to watch this one from the sidelines.

joe'smom 12-07-2018 03:24 PM

sewbizgirl, you did it! Congratulations! It's beautiful, as always. Allietare was my favorite mystery.

I haven't gotten any sewing in today, things keep coming up. Looking forward to starting this clue -- I'm using gold for green.

Sync 12-07-2018 04:10 PM

sewbizgirl, congrats on getting Allietare to the flimsy stage. Allietare was my first BH mystery and it took me 2 years to complete it ............ lol ......

I haven't tackled clue 3 yet .............. finishing up clue 1 and 2 first.

Congratulations!! Allietare is one that is on my bucket list.

ScubaK 12-08-2018 12:22 AM

Sewbizgirl....Allietare is my most favorite BH mystery quilt. I love them all...
I also like that she does this on the Friday after Thanksgiving. I like that it gives me something to focus on for myself during this busy time...
It's like a meditation time. I might not finish the quilt on time, but I have the clues and I make a few units as I can...then I usually finish by May...
Up until yesterday, I didn't, but I kinda do now
My logic is as follows :o

The finished size of top is to be 72" x 72".

This size happily lends itself to a 6 x 6 grid of 12" blocks (6x12=72). Total of 36 blocks.

I want to make a smaller top, so decided to do a 4 x 4 grid instead - totalling 16 blocks.

So for clues 1 and 2, I took the number of units to be made, divided this by 36 and then times by 16, and this gave me my number of units to make. Perfect.

Clue 3 this doesn't work. 100 does not (divide and times) into a whole number! I'd have to make 44.5 units, and that's not logical.

So my theory of 12" straight blocks in a 6x6 grid is hit on the head with clue 3.....

So the alternatives are either on point or sashed.

Time will tell..... And that's the fun of mysteries. :D

Cheers, K

Siodach, You are so clever! I would not have thought any of that through like you did. Math has never been my strong point. So glad you are doing this with us this year! I will get an email off to you soon. X Sandra

Battle Axe 12-08-2018 05:06 AM

My recipe for on point is for 18 blocks. How does that fit into the math? I'm having a moment.... but there are those of us that love on point with sashing and cornerstones.

tallchick 12-08-2018 05:22 AM

That is stunning Sewbiz! This is also on my bucket list, maybe I need to move it up a notch!

I just love seeing everyone’s progress and living vicariously through you all, such beautiful interpretations of color choices!

Great job, Sewbizgirl! Love your yellows and how they work. Does anyone remember if Bonnie mentions when you are "done" with a color? I too am wondering if her green yardage estimate included making HST's separate. I may just sneak off to the store today for more green. I'm working with yardage for the first time and didn't figure this into my planning.

Kassaundra 12-08-2018 06:59 AM

I came up w/ a piecing idea for clue 3 no putzing w/ tiny pieces no line drawing. Using wof strips and cutting. Not sure how to explain it or even if I could w/o being deleted, hope I can remember it when I start this quilt.

Kassaundra 12-08-2018 07:01 AM

If I remember right it is about 50/50, she mostly does when lots and lots of people start worrying about no more of a specific color in what they are using.

Macybaby 12-08-2018 07:15 AM

I've got most of my clue 3 cut and ready to sew. I wasn't sure about using green, but I had a lot of scraps so went ahead with it. I'm doing them separately - and I had a large quantity of neutral HST that I'd miscut for a mystery a few years back - and they are just the right size for the HST we are doing here.

joe'smom 12-08-2018 08:04 AM

I hope to make good progress on clue 3 today!

(I deleted my previous thought about the on-point setting, as I realized it couldn't be right.)

Impressive, Cheesehead. I found my folded corner ruler and successfully made one chevron.

sewbizgirl 12-08-2018 10:20 AM

Beautiful little units, Cheesehead. You've been dilligent!

I Love your green!

joe'smom 12-08-2018 10:42 AM

I love your fabrics, Cheesehead! Your units look great together.

toverly 12-08-2018 10:56 AM

Looking Great Cheesehead.

Thanks Kassaundra, I thought I remembered but wasnt' certain.

betthequilter, dive right in. The beauty of her patterns is that they contain simple units that make up to complicated blocks.

Siodach - I was thinking the bonus HST wouldn't play nicely with the other sizes we've been making but then I realized when sew into the quilt, 3 bonus HST = 2 of the other units so maybe the HST are part of some sashing.

Cheesehead - your units look great!

I re-read Clue #3 a few times then tried 3 methods - none of which included bonus triangles. I'll make those separately.
1) drawing a line, flipping the corner
2) taking the green rectangle, trimming the diagonal corners off then sewing a half triangle to each end
3) making parallelograms from a green strip then sewing a half triangle to each end

All 3 units came out the correct size so I'm going with method 3. I can use the beginning and ending triangle for the bonus HSTs, I won't have to draw any lines, and I will have almost no wasted fabric.

I can’t understand how I can start a rectangle 4.5” x 2.5” then cut off to get the angle and still get a 2” HST so that both the chevron unit and the 2” HST have a 1/4 “ seam. Does my question make sense? I have finished 2 units but neither the chevron or HST have 1/4” seams.

Sandra-P 12-08-2018 01:56 PM

Alva I believe Bonnie explained it and said that unit size is what matters and not the seam allowance. I like your greens!

toverly 12-08-2018 01:59 PM

Didn't work for me either AlvaStitcher. I think it's the same for others on this board that are making their bonus HST's separate. I could sometimes make it work if I had about an 1/8 of an inch seam. But then I wouldn't want that in a quilt. Sometimes theory is better than reality.

Kassaundra 12-08-2018 02:15 PM

Many people on FB are all saying b/c it is on the bias it won't fray and the seam will hold. I've never done such a tiny seam allowance so can't speak from experience, maybe it will, but I will not be putting those tiny seam allowances in my quilt

KalamaQuilts 12-08-2018 02:39 PM

I girded my loins and tried the method with the bonus triangles. I like it. Yes the seam allowance is sparse, but I just bumped my stitch setting down to 1.8 and on the bias it will be fine. My normal stitch length is 2.1

Sync 12-08-2018 04:26 PM

AlvaStitcher and toverly, I'm with you ................ I tried making 1 unit Bonnie's way with the bonus triangles ..... just didn't work, those slim seams just make me nervous so I'll do those HSTs separate.

joe'smom 12-08-2018 04:29 PM

I cut my green yardage for my second quilt, and it was just barely enough for the half chevrons and the extra HSTs (when not using the first method with the bonus units). However, checking my receipt I see that I bought 1 3/8 yd., whereas 1 1/4 yd. was specified in the intro, so those having just 1 1/4 yd. of green may come up a bit short if making the extra HSTs.

Cheesehead loving your fabrics. AmyBible your greens made me smile.

Finished my clue 3, whew, that was a lot of work.

retiredteacher09 12-08-2018 07:06 PM

Lovely units being shown.

I tried a couple with the rectangle/squares and then a parallogram and correct size triangles with my die cutter. Usually, my die cutter is the way I would go but my chevron was slightly narrower than the rectangle/squares so I decided I would go with the latter. I had quite a few green and white triangles already cut by my die cutter so I think I will cut the rest of the bonus ones that way and use the rectangle/square bonus ones as centers for log cabin type of blocks.

I am still working on clues 1 and 2. I have all of the squares cut for clue 3 and am working on getting the rectangles cut.

Mariposa 12-08-2018 07:35 PM

SBG~ beautiful Allietare!

Great pieces/units here. Nice to hear everyone's take on sewing to achieve the right size of units.

I'm still working on a few units from steps 1 & 2~

happylab 12-09-2018 07:41 AM

I like seeing everyone’s progress so far.

Sewbizgirl, your Allietare is beautiful. Doesn’t it feel good to have it done. I think I have the fabric for that mystery in a box, but not started. Too many other projects ahead.

I have all of my steps cut out. I used my Accuquilt to cut out all of step #3. I have marked all of step 3, just need to finish marking step #2 and the rest of the week is devoted to sew, sew, sew. I’m not using the ruler methods. I just use my old tried and true methods. As for step #3 I just cut the green fabric to size and cut the small sqs to her measurements and marked the sqs and now to sewing. I also decided to make a throw quilt for myself. I’m still undecided.

Happy sewing everyone.
