Bonnie Hunter's 2018-19 Mystery Quilt "Good Fortune"

It is here! Time for Bonnie's New Mystery Quilt, titled "Good Fortune". Her chosen colors were inspired by her trip to China. For all of the fun details, please visit her website:

www.quiltville.blogspot.com/2018/10/good-fortunea-quiltville-mystery.html

She has posted her introduction information today. The clues for this quilt will start on Friday, Nov. 23rd. Additional clues will follow every Friday, until the mystery is finished.
Remember to print or save each clue as it is released. All clues will be retired from the blog on Feb. 1, 2019. Then will be available to purchase in the digital downloads section of the Quiltville store.
*This mystery is for your personal use only.*

Let's chat, share pictures, ideas, and fabric choices, etc. This mystery is a great opportunity to learn some new tips, hints and methods while sewing. Have fun, relax, and stitch up a few units along the way!

Copyright Reminder:Please do not re-post copies of any clues for the mystery quilt and/or photos of work that is not your own. Thanks!

Stopped at neighborhood Lowes yesterday to get paint chips. Not an easy job. The colors are scattered over all the color palettes. Nice bright colors. Think I will really like this color combo. Excited to pull my bins of fabric and start gathering choices.

Mkotch 11-01-2018 03:33 AM

I'm shopping my stash for this one, and I hope I will have enough of the lighter orange (peach?). I'm assuming the neutrals will be OK with white, cream, and some shirting. Hope so, anyway! I have only done one other BH mystery and, although I didn't like it at first, I love the finished quilt now.

jmoore 11-01-2018 03:52 AM

I’m excited about the colors...I didn’t have any plans on doing this year’s mystery but I may have just been sucked in by the variety of colors. LOL

NZquilter 11-01-2018 03:56 AM

Thanks for starting up the new challenge thread, Mariposa! I'll be downloading each clue and watching from the fence, cheering you all on! I have way too many UFOs and WIP at the moment.

JENNR8R 11-01-2018 04:58 AM

I'm tempted...

Macybaby 11-01-2018 05:06 AM

I'm looking forward to this challenge - thanks for getting the thread up and running!

Even though Bonnie's got two oranges, it's to give you an idea of the range of orange to use (from light to dark) but you don't need both light and dark separately. I think the main goal is to not have any red/orange as you need distinction from the reds.

I'm not going to make the 60 mile trip to look for paint chips so this is what I'm going with as I pick from my stash. Again - this is what I'm going to use to help me pull from my stash - I do need discipline or everything will be aqua or peachy LOL!!

True blue shades, light and dark, avoid those going to purple or green.
Green - light dark going towards the mint shade, but away from aqua/blue - they look a bit more subdued and not the bright greens.
Reds - again more "true reds" so not towards purple and specifically not towards orange
Oranges - light to dark, can go toward yellow a bit, but not towards the red. ( I happen to have a good selection of oranges in my stash - not sure why . . .)
Neutrals - I'm going to avoid any that are leaning towards yellow, and try to stay with those more towards the taupe spectrum.

luvstoquilt301 11-01-2018 05:43 AM

I was thinking patriotic to donate. I can figure neutrals, red, blue, gold but I think I need one other color. It may have to be brown which is not my favortie,

joe'smom 11-01-2018 06:12 AM

Thank you, Mariposa, for getting this thread started!

After some thought, I had also decided that the lighter orange wouldn't function as a separate color, since Bonnie gave yardage for 'oranges.'

I love how these bright colors look together, so I will probably go with yardage rather than the duller-colored FQ bundle I had in my stash, even though I am curious to see how those busy FQ prints would work with this mystery.

Anyone who has seen the paint chips in person, do they come across accurately in Bonnie's photos? I'm thinking I won't bother getting them this year.

QuiltingVagabond 11-01-2018 06:16 AM

Let me confess to you how crazy I am! This weekend I will be putting final borders on Jamestown Landing (Bonnie Hunter design);
Next weekend I am taking a class with Bonnie for her Midnight Flight quilt;
I plan to do Good Fortune as it comes out;
I have a Wild and Goosey that I plan to make into a table runner which I take to my weekly sew-in;
I am currently quilting On Ringo Lake from last year's mystery;
And I am taking another class with Bonnie in March for Wonky Wishes!!!!!

Obviously I am demented and a huge BH fan! LOL

Cheesehead 11-01-2018 06:31 AM

I ran to Lowe's yesterday for my paint chips. The colors she shows are spot on with the exception of the neutral "oyster bar" which has a faint tint of green compared to the "marshmallow" and "choice cream". Walking up to the paint chip display is was real easy to pick out the bright colors and fairly easy to find marshmallow and cream.

AngeliaNR 11-01-2018 06:33 AM

Thanks for the thread!

I'm going to change orange for yellow/gold. My ORL corals last year pushed towards orange, and I'd like to use something different this time. Yellow and gold are both auspicious colors in the Chinese culture.

sewbizgirl 11-01-2018 06:39 AM

Thanks, Mariposa!

It's tempting to get the chips and pull fabrics from my scrap bins to match... but that's the fun and easy part. Then there's all the cutting and making and putting together... not sure I'm up for it this year, but will watch and cheer you all on as I collect clues. I love seeing the fabrics you put together!

joe'smom 11-01-2018 07:00 AM

Thank you for that info, Cheesehead!

I'd suggest using black~

I agree. These colors are going to be quite interesting together. I'm also interested in seeing what other colorways folks choose. :)

joe'smom 11-01-2018 07:16 AM

Since I'm considering using yardage for the first time in a Bonnie quilt, the comment of Bonnie's from the mystery intro has me a little concerned.

Does she mean, not commit to single fabrics for each color? Do you think 'why not just follow along all the way' means, why not go scrappy?

Macybaby 11-01-2018 07:41 AM

I think in the past Bonnie's had too many people comment "if I'd have known that, I'd have chosen differently" so if you are that type of person, it may be best to wait a bit. I think people confuse a "mystery" with a "sew along". The clues come fast enough a lot of us are way behind by the final reveal, so if someone else waits and then starts sewing, they will still have lots of people to "sew along" with as they complete it.

I'll be honest and say that I don't usually like Bonnie's color choices, but that is a personal thing. However each and every one of her mystery quilts that I've made has found a home with someone that was just amazed at how it wonderful it looked.

I also think that if you are person that does not like "scrappy" then you may want more control of the final results so waiting is good. if you are totally comfortable with the unpredictable of going "scrappy" then you probably will not end up disappointed no matter what, whether you go scrappy or not. I myself love using 6-7 different fabrics, so not really scrappy but not all one either.

It's all about deciding where your comfort zone is - or if you can deal with going completely outside of it for a while.

Lisa, I found that statement to be totally confusing and contradictory, as well! So I just blow it off... :D Basically your choices are 1) wait til late in the clues to figure out what's going on and what colors you want to use, or 2) forge ahead using the colors you want and live with the results. Either way is really going to work out fine. As Macybaby said, someone is going to love your resulting quilt. If you pick fabrics/colors you really like, then you should end up liking your quilt. If not, it can be given away.

I ended up selling my En Provence in my Etsy shop, because I had tried to talk myself into liking Bonnie's colors. In the end, I hated purple, yellow and green (MardiGras colors!) and couldn't stand to look at it. But someone snapped it right up!

joe'smom 11-01-2018 08:10 AM

Thanks, guys. (I'll probably cave anyway, and buy fabric for a scrappy, LOL.)

Terry in the ADK 11-01-2018 08:22 AM

Went to China several years ago and so will try to replicate Bonnie’s colors which were certainly prevalent in Beijing !
Here’s my question: I “justified “ buying an Accuquilt Go Big because I do these mystery quilts every year! Good excuse don’t you think😉! Anyway the dies are on sale,20% off, right now. What ones will she use! Does she give any clues? I have the very basic I think but would like to get what else I need while on sale.
BTW most LQS who carry them honor the sale so you don’t pay shipping!

sewbizgirl 11-01-2018 08:51 AM

Terry, Bonnie has said she will not give Accuquilt die info, because it reveals too much about the design mystery. But... based on other clues she has given, I'd "think small".

QuiltingVagabond 11-01-2018 08:56 AM

Terry, there is no way to know for sure but often 1 1/2" strips and 2" strips are used. Maybe 2 1/2" squares? or
2 1/2" strips? For HSTs she pairs 2 strips right sides together and cuts with the Essential Triangle ruler or the Easy Angle ruler rather than make them from individual squares.

Sync 11-01-2018 11:19 AM

Mariposa, thanks for starting this thread. I have already started to shop my stash. Blues, greens, reds ........... all high up on my favorite colors list. Hmmmmmmmmmm ............ just stuck some blues in a project box for a "future" quilt, might have to rethink that one. Well, back to finishing ORL.

Mumto2 11-01-2018 11:22 AM

I have never done a mystery quilt before but think I want to give this one a try. The colours do concern me but I should probably get the paint chips before I shine too much!

toverly 11-01-2018 11:59 AM

Just picked up my paint chips. It's very basic primary colors.Bet it will make a great Boy Quilt. I think if you went with a red, green, blue and orange crayon you would have the colors close enough for those who don't want to pick up paint chips. Outgoing orange is a deep peach. Marshmallow is a soft white and Oyster Bar to me looks like a light beige. Of course we could all meet up at Epcot's China to see the colors. Wouldn't that be a blast.

ILoveToQuilt 11-01-2018 12:47 PM

Hopefully will get my paint chips by early next week. I get my chips, but then I wait for ALL the clues to come out before I decide to make the quilt. Started one years ago (hot pink, aqua, white and black...don't remember the name of the quilt), but stopped making it because I didn't like it. I've since just printed the clues for each successive mystery and have them filed away with their color chips. This is just the way I do it and it works for me.

I absolutely LOVE to see everyone's progress and how different everyone's quilts turn out.

Thank you, Mariposa, for starting this thread.

SooBDo 11-01-2018 01:25 PM

Thank you Mariposa for leading us this year!

As with some of you, I've done quite a number of Bonnie's mysteries, and I have four Bonnie quilts (2 of them mysteries) in baggies. Oh boy! So, I think I'll sit on the sideline for awhile.

We in Alaska are a little challenged by distance to get to Lowe's to find the Sherwin Williams paint chips. I know crayons would work, and in the past there has been embroidery floss used to match those colors. Would anyone have color number for embroidery floss?

This is always a fun thread to follow, because everyone is so upbeat and so very helpful to each other. Such a wonderful place to exchange our progress and ideas.

Ready for the fun to begin!

Kassaundra 11-01-2018 02:24 PM

If you do an image search on the FB Quiltville group someone posted a pic w/ the embroidery floss colors, in the comments on that thread the numbers are listed.

Oh man....these colors are right up my alley... Unable to sew along but will download clues and watch your creations some to to life... Have fun!!

audsgirl 11-01-2018 03:40 PM

I don't like primary colors and I really don't like red, so this will be the first Bonnie Hunter mystery where I will not follow her color choices. It will probably take me a couple of weeks to figure out just what my palette will be.

Leslie

SooBDo 11-01-2018 05:46 PM

Thanks Kassaundra, I’ll try that. I also saw someone use m&m’s on the paint chips that match perfectly. Only trouble is consuming the clues

joe'smom 11-01-2018 06:23 PM

I've accepted the fact that the prints in that fat quarter bundle are too big for a Bonnie quilt, so I ran out to pick up the paint chips tonight. I really love how these colors look together. I've rarely worked with primary colors, so it will be something different!

retiredteacher09 11-01-2018 07:16 PM

Thanks for starting this thread, Mariposa.

I am following along but, at this time, will probably just save the clues.

frustratedquilter40 11-01-2018 07:34 PM

Thanks for starting this thread. I will be playing along. I may stick with the colors Bonnie has chosen this year not my usually my greens and that dark blue are depleted in my stash so we will see. I need to dig through my scrap saver system that Bonnie goes by and see if I feel I have enough in those colors to work. Still have till the day the clues start being released to make a final decision ;)

I was an hour away from home, and didn't know that there was a Sherwin Williams store there. I stopped in, and got most of the paint chips. I was going by memory since I'd left my list at home. Missed the lighter orange, and a couple of the neautrals. Easy fix. :)

Battle Axe 11-02-2018 02:28 AM

Thanks so much for the floss and chips information. Was at the fabric store yesterday and thought I'd remember but of course I got the green wrong. Oh well, I'll use it somewhere.

Kaye 11-02-2018 03:47 AM

I've done the last two so I plan to join in on this one, too. I have to admit it's been fun seeing On Ringo Lake at the top of Bonnie's blog all year and knowing I have a match on my guest room bed! I'm almost finished with Wonky Wishes and Star Struck from classes I took with Bonnie in the spring. These should be finished by Thanksgiving....perfect timing!

Looking forward to seeing pictures of everyone's fabric choices! I think that's my favorite part of this Board!

Rhonda Lee 11-02-2018 05:27 AM

I'm an avid fan of Bonnie Hunter. I read her blog daily and am always amazed at her energy and what she accomplishes. I've done two mysteries. Mostly I'm pleased with the reveal but once in a while not so much. However, if I don't like it as much as others that does not take away the talent this wonderful woman has. It's only my own opinion. I'll follow along with this one, save the clues, and see at the end if it's something I want to do. I have a lot of Christmas projects this year and a large number of UFO's I've decided to complete in the coming year. Good luck everyone and have fun with this adventure.
