As I read the clues this year, my thought was that Bonnie is trying too hard to cover all the possibilities. Which makes reading the clues more confusing. Perhaps if she were to post the clue with what needs to be made then attach links for various methods? I don't know how best to do it, but I know she really does not like people complaining about it and as a result, she maybe has over compensated.

Linda your units are beautiful.
How were you able to post your pictures? I clicked on the image but it asks for a URL. I just want to post from my desktop. Thanks in advance for any help.

Vagabond, you have a good point. I like to make my FG units 4 at a time, but managed to change for these geese. Glad I did, because some of the geese do not have the same fabric in the triangle units. Also, keeping track of the two different types of sets was a trifle tedious. I only managed that by reading carefully, more than once, clues 7 and 8, combining those for the pinwheels, then just combined those left. Must have counted ten times—need X pinwheel sets and Y non pinwheel sets. Everyone, just remember that you din’t need to finish on any time line.

Non scrappy would have been much easier this time!

When in the window to type your post, scroll down to the box below that says Additional Options. Scroll past Miscellaneous Options to the Attach Files section. Click the box that says Manage Attachments.
This will open a new window that lets you attach multiple photos from your computer. Select your photos and then scroll left to right on the bar at the bottom and it will show a bar to click on that will attach your files.
Return to the typing window and click Submit Reply. Ta Daaaaa... your photos should be attached. You might have a problem if your file is too large. I always edit my photos to a smaller size when saving them.
If the photo is from my phone, if it was able to send it via e-mail, it is already resized.

Taking a break from Clue 8. I do not like FG made this way at all. I think my strips may have been just 2.5", where a thread or two beyond might have been better. As a result, the seam allowance above the goose nose is not quite 1/4" on quite a few. I'm calling them good enough. Well, those that are done.

In a minute, I need to get back to them so I can start fresh with tomorrow's clue. We were away over the weekend for our grandson's 4th birthday. Monday morning, I woke up with a stomach bug that was awful. Side effects of hanging out with little ones. :(

My guess for tomorrow is some string piecing of neutrals. We've barely used them! I've appreciated this year's slower pace, it's given me the chance to stay caught up and to do some other things that I have committed to as well. While some have struggled with groups/sets/matching, by looking at the pictures that go with the instructions, I've been okay. At least I think I have...

I haven't taken a single picture of my progress this year. Maybe tomorrow will be bright enough to get a good shot or two. Today was dark, windy and snowy. We've had almost no snow and temps above freezing since before Christmas, so I will try not to complain about winter's return. It does make good weather for sewing!

Reveal and final clue is up, love it!

https://quiltville.blogspot.com/2020...-9-reveal.html

KalamaQuilts 01-17-2020 04:46 AM

my colors will surely change the look of mine! And finally...we know what that funny 2 color long strip is for...was that clue 2?

Iceblossom 01-17-2020 04:56 AM

Oh my goodness, I had some things right but did not picture that!

I think my fabric will be lovely, weird color shifts or not.

It's going to take some time to digest the reveal and the directions but I just sat down with a fresh cup of coffee so it's a good time.

AlvaStitcher 01-17-2020 05:31 AM

Oh boy! Looks like a doozy to put together. It appears that I will have to remake more of my units to match. It is very pretty though.

happylab 01-17-2020 06:18 AM

I have a question, after looking at the final directions, do we only have one place with the green in the flying geese pieces?

armybandvet 01-17-2020 06:26 AM

I am a glutton for punishment and will be making mine to fit my king size bed. I absolutely love the reveal!

If I'm reading correctly the blue geese are the only place where green was used. I think neutrals are the only thing we still need to cut.

ETA, my bad, we are cutting blues too. I'm reading for expanding my quilt, not yet for comprehension lol

SusieQOH 01-17-2020 06:30 AM

happylab, I believe yes.

I looked at the reveal first thing this morning and it looked incredibly daunting!
I need to really look at it. Need more coffee lol

Since my pinwheels and FG don't match I have some work to do. Glad I have the fabric.

QuiltingNinaSue 01-17-2020 06:39 AM

The Reveal: wow. Colorful. Cannot wait to see everyone's quilt put together. I will tag along at the end and reveal my 3 quilts all made with different fabric. Exciting news, like Christmas is coming!

joe'smom 01-17-2020 06:54 AM

QNinaSue, I didn't realize you were making 3 versions!

Since I went looking for guess layouts on instagram, I was prepared for the star block, which I think is lovely with the matched sets. (This is where I thought people who have a darker aqua might not be pleased.) But who on earth could have figured out the rest, LOL.

Maybe those wanting more green could make some more HSTs for the border? We're bound to see many interesting variations taking shape in the days to come!

This 'clue' is going to take forever to digest so I'm going to feed the dogs and come back and print it out later

happylab 01-17-2020 07:06 AM

Woke up to freezing precipitation. Was suppose to get snow first, but if we did it was barely anything. This should last until about 3pm. Then hopefully it all turns to rain and our roads improve. I received a message stating KCI had a plane slide on the runway. Haven’t heard nothing on the news. So I guess this is a great day to work on Frolic.

Thank-you armybandvet for answering and double checking my green question. I may have enough fabric to do that step in one fabric color of green.

I really like the reveal. I love the colors and the pattern. Thank-you Bonnie you did a great job, (if you ever read this).

One last question. I recently saw directions showing us how to make flying geese with 3 different colors. Does anyone remember or know how to do that. It’s the method where you complete 4 flying geese at a time? No waste of fabric, until we trim.

Happy sewing everyone!!!!!

Happy lab,
wouldn't you use two different colours for the small squares that go onthe one large square for the no waste FG method?

Iceblossom 01-17-2020 08:00 AM

Okay, I've had more coffee and I've stared at the directions and reveal photo and I'm going to do this exactly as she says, one step/one set of fabrics at a time. First will be cutting all my neutrals (or yellow in my case), I'm off to a good start because I have a bunch of squares from when I had one of my imaginary numbers in my head and cut too many in a previous step. They will have to be trimmed down but I've had them sitting to one side of the cutting board ever since I over cut them. Also have a lot of little strips that are within the size range and good for scrappy since they don't have to be in sets.

Realistically, getting my neutrals together is as much as I feel like doing today. Maybe actually turn on the sewing machine/maybe not.

I was entirely wrong in my head on how I thought we'd be using those neutral/framboise rectangles. That's why it's a mystery!

I’m thinking I’m going to be a rebel and not put the blocks on point. I like the look of it better staying square

Macybaby 01-17-2020 08:11 AM

I finally got my computer hooked up in our new home - just in time to download all the parts so I can make this in the future. I've so missed playing along this year, but my machines are still packed up! The weather isn't nice enough to make the trip to the old place for cleaning and such, so maybe I'll have a bit more time to organize things at the new place!

I am so ready to be sewing again.

SusieQOH 01-17-2020 08:17 AM

JanieW- your blocks look beautiful!!!

Carol in WI 01-17-2020 08:40 AM

Janie, I love your color choices and am so anxious to see the finished products on all of these; you do beautiful work; I may go with straight rows too and will try to set up at least 4 blocks today.

MacyBaby.... I think that is an understatement! They’ve shut down the courthouses so I’m having an adult snow day! So far I’ve cleaned the kitchen and read through all the instructions. I’m just going to go step by step.

i am not a fan of the border. For me I need a thicker border to offset how busy everything else is. I may have to play with the fabric I have left after I finish to see what I can come up with.

wildyard 01-17-2020 09:37 AM

Wow, I am overwhelmed by the final clue and reveal. I feel like there are multiple clues all crammed into one. It's kind of like when you read a long mystery book only to have all the outstanding dangling threads all tied up in one crazy final chapter and you are left hanging over a chasm rather than gently led to a safe and secure ending!!!
I am sure I will be able to get thru this, but right now it leaves me not even wanting to try to complete the clues and quilt. I just want to cry out ?!?!?! This may well be my first, and last, BH mystery quilt. Perhaps my foggy brain is just not meant for such things. LOL
I won't cry for help yet, as I haven't even begun to get my head in a starting place on clue 9. Maybe tomorrow...... one can hope.

PamelaOry 01-17-2020 09:43 AM

I am in a really similar place. I’m feeling like this is just beyond my abilities. I’m also noticing how all the really experienced quilters here are saying they are going to have to take a step at a time. Is this an intermediate quilt or is it advanced?

Wow, this quilt is busy!
I'm not sure if I like the border. Busy bordering busy.

ScubaK 01-17-2020 10:03 AM

Wow! I think the reveal is lovely! I love how Bonnies' mystery always takes me out of my comfort zones on colors and techniques.
I just have to remember to take it one step at a time and it shouldn't be too hard since we now can see the end result. I certainly don't have to finish it today! HaHa!
If you are confused like I am/have been then reach out here for some help. There are several who have helped me figure things out.

Belfrybat 01-17-2020 10:12 AM

I.love.this.reveal. I wouldn't have imagined this layout in a thousand years! Since the HSTs are used for the border I'm going to have to do a bucket load more or go with something else. But I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

Wildyard -- those of us who have done Bonnie's quilts in the past are prepared for this and more -- like a clue a day for several days before the reveal. My first was Easy Street and it took me a year to get the assembly done and I was only doing a 1/3rd size. My brain doesn't do puzzles well, and these often seem like puzzles to me. But I've learned to take it one step at a time and follow her directions to a "T". But I've found if I work on it for a day or two, then come back to it a few days later, I don't get as frustrated. And it is always worth the satisfaction of doing a quilt I would never do on my own.

It is not beyond your ability at all. Just go slowly and take one part at a time. As to complexity, I'd say intermediate as the pieces are all square. Adding in curves would make it advanced, in my mind.

QuiltingLawyer 01-17-2020 10:16 AM

For those that are confused just take it one chunk at a time.

Start by making the main blocks. You have almost all the parts ready to go for those. Just start there. Once you have those blocks done add the sashings.

Just take it one piece at a time. This step is not as complicated as it seems... it’s just really long because of the setting triangles.

joe'smom 01-17-2020 10:57 AM

JanieW, I want to make sure you know that your aqua/blue HSTs are turned the opposite way from Bonnie's.

As to the question of whether this is intermediate or advanced, none of Bonnie's units are especially difficult; I think they would be labeled as beginning or intermediate. I think her quilts seem more difficult because of the numbers of units involved, and then the huge amount of info that is released with the last clue.

I would encourage everyone to realize that you can break up this last 'clue' into many smaller ones, and just deal with one a week if that suits. We have until next Halloween to put this together, LOL.

Krisb 01-17-2020 11:18 AM

Yes, this clue is long. You will be 1). Making corner 4 patches for the blocks. 2.) pairing up the geese units 3) assembling the blocks 4) assembling the setting triangles AKA half blocks 4). Assembling the corner units AKA corner quarter blocks. All your blocks are now done—on to the sashing!

5). Those raspberry neutral odd rectangles need to be longer to match the size of the blocks Join one of those oddities to each end of a neutral 1.5” x 4.5” .

I am going to cut each step as I need it, to avoid panicking at the thought that some previously cut pieces have gone walkabout.

The rows go together just as Bonnie does them. I literally set my blocks on the design wall on point—with one corner on the top. That way the rows go across, and I don’t get a crick in neck tilting my head sideways to look at them.

This quilt is not so much difficult as it is complicated, and keeping straight which pieces belong together is a rather tedious task. Just go slowly—one step at a time. You can do it, one block at a time.

JanieW 01-17-2020 11:35 AM

Thanks , joe’smom. I hadn’t noticed. I’ll change them to the right way and see what looks good. I may leave them that way as I’m not going to put the blocks on point and I like how it looks. Appreciate the heads up.

I changed the hsts and I like Bonnie’s way better. Good thing you saw my error before I started putting blocks together, joe’smom. Thank you

Iceblossom 01-17-2020 12:28 PM

We can do this folks, I think I would have had us do it in two steps, but we can take those steps together. I don't really like having to go a block at a time, usually I design my projects so I can avoid it, but this isn't my project and it's sort of what my fabrics demand in addition to how it was designed. Again, it is Bonnie Hunter's Frolic Mystery and I'm letting the designer do their part. As with each of the steps, by the time I get to the end I get a rhythm and it gets better.

I'm just being a slacker today and not feeling overly motivated to do anything... except maybe make some lunch.

For those that don't like the double sawtooth border, I was expecting pinwheels and you can make those from the same HST, either alternating colors or two colors each.

toverly 01-17-2020 12:32 PM

Cheers to all of y'all that are ready for the reveal. It's a great quilt, I dropped out about halfway. It's time for me to copy the plans I've printed and go line by line with a highlighter to make certain I've got it all done. Carry on y'all, looking forward to seeing all your great finishes.

joe'smom 01-17-2020 01:48 PM

JanieW, that is one gorgeous block!

I finally finished printing out the clue (I prefer to re-size the pictures in a word document so it takes a while).

Now to decide what to do about the quilt I put up on the wall while waiting for today to arrive. Should I continue putting that together until the center is a unit, or strip the rows off the wall and get to frolicking?

KalamaQuilts 01-17-2020 02:00 PM

Seeing the quilt on point, on the fence at the top of the Facebook page, I prefer the units straight rather than on point too, that said I’ve been knee deep kitting up blocks for another project ... after gallbladder surgery next Tuesday I don’t know if I’ll feel like sitting at a machine or standing up sorting the mystery. Either way I’ll be ready!

armybandvet 01-17-2020 02:48 PM

I'm echoing everyone that says this is a totally do-able quilt. My brain is pretty chaotic but some of those clues were information overload! I think it's a combination of trying to explain thoroughly for those who need it (she's a teacher, that's what she does), trying to explain a few alternate methods when possible, trying to keep the mystery, and trying to keep a wide range of people challenged along the way. The reveal could have been broken down into at least a couple more weekly clues, but it wasn't. Of course this is not my quilt, not my blog, not my circus, so I'll happily deal with what we've been given without complaining!

For me, given how my brain works and the kinds of quilts I tend to make, the toughest part has been keeping the matching sets matching all along the way. I don't think any of the individual parts are beyond the abilities of a determined beginner.

This is the third Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt I've sewn. I have a few others cut and ready to go, but I have those in clue form also. I can't speak to what the mystery instructions look like when unscrambled and written as a regular pattern, but this one might be worth waiting to purchase if you love the quilt but found the clues to be too confusing.

LyndaOH 01-17-2020 04:16 PM

I have not been sewing week by week because I've done that in the past with Bonnie's mysteries and been very disappointed at the end. In one case, I just didn't like the design, but in the other it was because the quilt was actually so much easier to make than the way she made it.

For all of you who have worked on the quilt clues each week, congratulations! I can't wait to see all your reveals and all the different fabrics you've chosen.

I did order fabric for the quilt and I will be making a version of it. It's essentially a LeMoyne Star with an alternating block that I designed to have the blue triangles to complete the wavy look of the quilt, and a thin "X" across the block. My blocks are the same orientation as Bonnie's, but the quilt is not set on point so no pesky half and quarter blocks and no bias edges, and no sashing. I will also do a thin border in neutrals (finishing at 2") and a second border that I haven't decided about. I'm thinking maybe four patches set diagonally. Now that I have both a plan and a snowstorm coming, I'll get started this weekend.

Just a word about the LeMoyne Stars in Bonnie's quilt. Does anyone have any idea why she would have us make the stars out of double the number of patches? Do you think it was to avoid the Y seam? I could see that, because it's hard to teach Y seams online, although once you've done a few they are easy. My other thought was that it helped her keep the mystery. Thoughts?

Looking forward to seeing blocks and then quilt tops!

Best of luck with the gallbladder surgery on Tuesday! I saw one performed on TV recently and it was done with two tiny incisions and the patient went home the same day. I hope yours can be done that way! I'll keep a good thought for you.
