Giant Scrappy Swoon Quilt Along
I have seen these quilts online for quite some time andhave been absolutely infatuated with them.I have been so inspired I thought, let’s all get together and do anonline Quilt-Along QB style and see how many wonderful scrappy Swoon quilts wecan create together. The really coolpart about doing a quilt along is there is no mailing, no swapping, and nofuss.Heck! Not really even deadlines unless, of courseyou choose to keep up with the group. Ihope you do but that’s up to you!
I’m a huge proponent of giving credit where credit is dueand this quilt along was originally offered online by Jennifer Harrison ofHopeful Homemaker in 2013 and she was inspired by Camille Roskelley’s Swoonpattern. I plan on posting new steps and instructions monthly forfive months so we should be finished by the end of September. The finished quilt will measure 72” x72”.

I would be interested in joining!

Woo Hoo! Jump in! It's going to be great. I encourage you to check out pics online to get some ideas. The possibilities are endless.

Oh I think I want too, but I will need to get a pattern from somewhere, I have never actually seen the pattern in stores in my area, although I have seen lovely quilts posted. When does this start, and do we just post to this thread or is there a group somewhere?
fatquarters - no pattern needed. It's not the smaller size. We'll be making sections using squares and HST's over the course of 5 months. I'll post the instructions here. Will post pics here too.
I'll probably start posting next week. Jane |
Here are some examples:

In the meantime, start figuring out which color you want in which spot. The background does not have to be white or light colors. Or decide on a theme, i.e., 30's, Civil War reproduction, Christmas, etc.

Sorry Jane, I misunderstood, and thought you were making the real swoon quilt, These are kind of pretty too.
I've been wanting to do a Swoon quilt, so I think I'll jump in with both feet.....it may not be too scrappy though, as my scrap pieces are so small right now......I've used all the larger pieces on another scrappy quilt that I'm trying to finish now.
Jane -- I've never heard of this pattern before, but looks like fun! I like the idea of using scraps -- scrappy quilts are my very favorite. And not needing a pattern is a plus, too! I will check out my stash & see what colors I can pull together. Hope I can keep up! Thanks for the invite!
Oh, I think I'll join!
Yeah!!!
For reference, please feel free to check out Jennifer's site: http://hopefulhomemaker.com/ The pieces will be 3 1/2" squares and 3 1/2" HST's if that helps. Hope everyone is choosing their color layouts! I'm think of doing 'chocolate covered cherries' - - - pinks and browns on an off-white/lighter background. Jane |
I am hoping to join. I am in the middle of work, its tax season here. I will try and do what I can.
Looks beautiful! I'm in.
I am also planning on joining; new to quilting but looking forward to learning:)
sounds like fun....so its all 3.5 squares and 3.5 hst i'll have to check my stash and see what I can come up with
I am interested in joining along too and will check out the tutorials.
I was wondering when you will be posting the 1st instructions? So I can try to follow along, or at least lurk from the side lines. Depending on when you decide to start this quilt. I love the project. I'm undecided on what scrappy fabric to use and what colors. I copied the pattern instructions for the project. I'm thinking you will be using her instructions. Or are we doing a different pattern?
I will be following along also.
Thanks for starting this thread. Connie |
I will start posting instructions next week - maybe sooner. We will be following Jennifer's concept and I will post my instructions AND we will have the fun of working on this project together!
I was also thinking, in keeping with the idea of 'scrappy' that we might do some swapping along the way. Thoughts? Jane |
I've changed my mind about my color choices. I have a boatload of black & whites so that will be my background. Now I'm thinking reds for my primary color and maybe pinks for the secondary color.
What is everyone else considering? Jane |
I was considering the same thing -- I have a ton of black-on-white fabric & thought about reds, too -- only I made that quilt already for one daughter's memory quilt (2010), which is why I have so much b&w leftover! But I couldn't think of a third color myself. My other choice would be Christmas, since I always wanted a Christmas quilt -- & there's no point in waiting until November to start that one. But I don't think I have enough reds for either, anyway. So I'm still thinking!
I'm thinking batiks fabric, with purple, blue, green and off white on white or cream on cream for background. I haven't pulled the colors yet. Or use Christmas fabric reds, greens, blue and white fabric with snow flakes. I finally decide after I full my fabric.
I think mine will be cream background, with teals and rose colors....or maybe not.....too much stash to choose from!
I am also thinking about using red, black and some other color:)
I was considering pink and navy similar to the photo, but after you mentioned pink and browns, I'm debating that combination. So many people do not like brown (I'm not one of them) in a quilt that I have a lot of brown stash. Seems it is prominent on the sale racks so I buy it for who-knows-what!! LOL!! I'm excited to get started on this new project; not that I don't have gobs of UFO's.

Sounds like fun! I am in :)
OK everyone! Here we go! Keep in mind this whole quilt is made of 3 1/2" squares and 3 1/2" HST's in various color combinations.
STEP ONE: Please piece together 36 -3 1/2" squares from your PRIMARY color which will be the center of our star. This section should measure 18 1/2" square unfinished. Go get 'em!!! Jane Here is the first step: |
Hope to have this done soon, remodeling our master bath is taking precedence.
Hi jane, I think I'll jump in here but mine will be totally scrappy and I'll use some of my thousands of 2 1/2 inch squares. Should be a lot of fun!
I'm going to lurk along if that is ok?
Of course! Maybe you'll be inspired by what others are doing - - -
Also, if you're interested, check out the link on the first page; save or print out. Jane |
OMG Jane you have me hooked again. Going to start with the black and whites for the center and then I'll decide. Pic looks awesome and I'm not even a scrappy quilter. Thinking I can go lots of options this way....hopefully :)
I,m in . I have lots of scraps to use up.
Center done! I have it easy with all my precut squares. Will just have to make the hsts and that'll go fast.
Yeah!!! Welcome!!! I finished my center the other day. Will post pics soon. I might tweak it a little bit though. I'm using blacks & whites for my background and reds for my primary color. Haven't quite decided on my secondary color yet - - -
Jane |
I love this quilt! I had to go back and look at the time frame. So glad it's over months, I can definitely do this! I might not be able to start for another week or two, but will catch up quickly. Thanks for organizing this!
