It's beautiful, sunlitensmiles. Love your backing and binding.

SunlitenSmiles 01-29-2015 09:30 AM

Thank You, quiltsRfun, the flooring at the hotel (pictures, by Bonnie) reminded me of the B&W check in my 'stash' for a few years!

sewbizgirl 01-29-2015 11:05 AM

Beautiful block, Julie!

And beautiful finished quilt, SunlightenSmiles! Your backing and binding are great compliments to it.

Windblown 01-29-2015 11:09 AM

sunlitensmiles that is truly beautiful and a great idea to use the black and white check.
I had to take a brief break form mine,to think about a plan for my boarders but I will be back at it soon.

SunlitenSmiles 01-29-2015 11:56 AM

if anyone decides to use the B&W checkerboard, I recommend a larger print than what I had in my stash. I saw a larger one this weekend at "Road to California" and think the proportions would have been better. Thank You for the wonderful comments "you make my day".

QultingaddictUK 01-29-2015 12:01 PM

Luv it, luv it, luv it, luv it, luv it, I think you may have guessed, I like your quilt Sunlitensmiles, and you made my day by posting your pic. Who is it going to be for?

Your quilt is beautiful!

I love that you didn't "tamper" with the centers and let it swirl the way it's intended.

costumegirl 01-29-2015 01:44 PM

Sunlitensmiles - Great job!! I really like your binding!! Nice pic in the park setting!!

frustratedquilter40 01-29-2015 01:51 PM

SunlienSmiles your quilt looks amazing absolutely love the black and white checkerboard fabric you used for the binding. Great backing fabric too!

Sophie2 01-29-2015 02:30 PM

SunlienSmiles - thanks for sharing your beautiful quilt in a beautiful park setting. It reminded me of what grass looks like! LOL I am only looking at lots of snow in the yard and more blowing around.

joe'smom 01-29-2015 03:23 PM

Julie, you have such interesting fabrics! Can't wait to see the whole quilt together. (If you post photos by scrolling down to 'Go Advanced' and using the 'Manage Attachments' tab, rather than using the tree icon, you won't get the double photos.)

Sunlitensmiles, that is so beautiful, and such a lovely setting for the photo! Quilts look wonderful photographed outside. I'm another fan of that checked binding! Well done! Thank you both for posting photos!

Emma S 01-29-2015 04:48 PM

Well count me as another one who thinks that binding is incredible. I never would have considered it but its perfect, the size is perfect too. If it was larger I think you might loose some of the impact. Oh and did I mention the backing, just super. You hit a home run!

SunlitenSmiles 01-29-2015 05:02 PM

LOL @ home run, yes that is a baseball diamond and that is Burbanks' Bob Hope Airport in the distance about an air mile away and downhill. I plan to send it to my DDIL in Illinois where there is snow and hope it feels like sunshine and springtime for her.

lfstamper 01-29-2015 05:11 PM

Beautiful quilt sunlitensmiles! Love your binding and back too.

thimblebug6000 01-29-2015 05:29 PM

More beautiful quilts. Sunliten... what quilting design did you use when you quilted yours? Did you use a DSM?

Podunk Princess 01-29-2015 05:40 PM

Love your version of the Grand Illusion SunlitenSmiles! The checks in the border and binding are terrific. It really pops all the other colors and adds a lot of interest to the design.

I am uncertain which block center design to use. My inclination is for smaller bits of color there, but does it work? (square in a square in a square)

SunlitenSmiles 01-29-2015 06:35 PM

quilted with an allover medium stipple using my SINGER 301A , thank you for asking (forgot to take a close-up).

My computer has been down all week...took to Geek squad at Staples...up & running again! Here is my finished quilttop & runner; neither are quilted yet. I will find backing soon, but the binding will be the flower fabric that is in the centers & was my inspiration for the colors; probably use it on the back too, but will have to add other fabric to make it big enough. I am really pleased with how I was able to use extras for top & bottom to make longer. I actually am quite happy with the finished results; thought I would not be!

quiltsRfun 01-29-2015 10:54 PM

Nice work, Vicki. I like the shade of green you've used.

Emma S 01-30-2015 07:36 AM

JM: I like the way the square within a square looks. Somehow it lends itself to the airiness of the quilt.

Vicki: Your quilt is so vibrant. Whenever I see that greyish green, I try to figure out why it does such a nice thing to the design. Never came to a conclusion, just know it does.

mimiknoxtaylor 01-31-2015 03:27 AM

Sunlitensmiles, love how yours finished. Just beautiful. We'll be in Palm Springs mid-February to visit one of our sons. Are you close to there? Know any great LQS in area?
VickiM, yous is lovely too. Like that gray-green, seems to calm down the wattage.
Joesmom- I like both ways. So I'm no help.

SunlitenSmiles 01-31-2015 05:48 AM

I know that Palm Springs looks close to Burbank on a map but it is actually more that 100 miles. California is about a 6 hour drive coast to coast (east coast is the Colorado River) and more than a 14 hour drive from U.S. National border to the Oregon border, even on freeways! There were 2 LQS last time I was there but your best bet would be to check the Southern California Quilt Run web site because so many LQS have closed or moved. Some stores have limited store hours, so best to call or check their web sites. Hope this helps :sew:

I LOVE this fabric! What a great find.

Thank you Tweety, it is cheerful 1

joe'smom 01-31-2015 08:02 PM

Emma and mimiknoxtaylor, thanks for your feedback! After considering, I think the square in a square doesn't give the block enough of a focal point, so I will move on with the 4-patch (at least, that's how I'm feeling tonight, lol).

QultingaddictUK 02-01-2015 01:50 AM

http://quiltville.blogspot.co.uk/201...+%26amp;+Snips!!) An absolutely fantabulous range of Grand Illusions, make a cup of coffee and enjoy :)

Emma S 02-01-2015 07:22 AM

JM: I know, design decisions can be so difficult. Whatever you choose to do, its going to be beautiful.

BerninaGirl 02-01-2015 07:26 AM

Thanks for the link with all the mystery quilts

costumegirl 02-01-2015 08:57 AM

Are most of you quilting your GI with stippling or have some of you used a different design? I like to choose a quilting pattern that enhances the blocks but since these have lots of pieces and are very busy in their 'movement' with no 'pauses' in between, I'm debating on what to choose .....

Opinions please! I've been looking for a backing for my BHMQ for awhile now. I want novelty but not a "what was she thinking?!" novelty fabric. How do you feel about the scooters? I love the black and white check binding someone posted and want to use that idea with this fabric. Is this too "out there"? Thanks!

http://theinboxjaunt.com/2014/08/19/...uilt-tutorial/ I have just started using this pattern, not on the Grand Illusion but another one and am loving it, so easy and forgiving.

http://theinboxjaunt.com/quilt/free-...ing-tutorials/ As you can see she has a lot more really lovely designs, I am thinking of trying out the "Ribbon candy" because I think it may be quite good on the GL with all the strips to follow, just an idea at present. :)

And of course there is always Leah Days but I think most may be a but fussy http://www.leahday.com/project1/

costumegirl 02-01-2015 09:54 AM

Thanks QuiltingaddictUK for the links to Lori Kennedy's site :) She has great ideas!

sewbizgirl 02-01-2015 10:01 AM

I love that scooter fabric, Baronreads! Great find!

SunlitenSmiles 02-01-2015 10:09 AM

if scooters are on the island..... sure.... know bicycles are there.....bet scooters are

my checkerboard was a Moda fabric and did not 'run' at all....that is always a consideration with B&W fabrics.

joe'smom 02-01-2015 10:33 AM

Julie, the scooters are cute, but it looks like a very cool pink. It would help to see it beside one of your blocks.
