I have another question. I just finished putting my blocks together and now need to cut the cornerstones. Are these supposed to be scrappy? I'm just wondering what everyone did. Thanks!

SunlitenSmiles 02-01-2015 02:59 PM

the grand illusion cornerstones were the four that we made in clue part 5

baronreads 02-01-2015 06:10 PM

I'm talking about the 3.5" squares from aqua in the finale, she calls these cornerstones. They go between the green/white sashings.

OIC well I had several different aquas in my Grand Illusion but I cut those all of the same aqua, because it was my favorite. Sorry I misunderstood. here is the picture again, in case that would help.

joe'smom 02-01-2015 08:20 PM

Of the photos I've looked at, people with scrappy quilts have gone both ways with the cornerstones -- constant and scrappy. It looks nice either way. I've been picturing something less bright than my block aquas for the cornerstones and am still considering what fabric to use.

baronreads 02-01-2015 08:20 PM

Thank you and I love your backing!

Yes, I cut mine scrappy, just like all of the other aquas in my quilt.

I owe Bonnie a big apology. This is my third BH mystery quilt and they all put me way out of my comfort zone but I always learn something. I too was disappointed at the reveal. It was way too busy for me. Then I realized I put the green and black block strips together wrong. I also had decided to use solid yellow as a replacement for the center square. Finally I simplified the boarders. I did this because I was under a time constrant to get it done!
This quilt is a prayer quilt. I prayed for my friends while I worked on it. He battled leukemia and finally, after 2 stem-cell replacement attempts, passed away just before the reveal. They lived in PR and were in NYC since April for the treament. She has now returned to PR and I am sending this out tomorrow.
Oh, reason for the apology? It has become my favorite quilt! (Even though I have spotted one block done wrong!) Sorry, can't get picture to post.

sewbizgirl 02-02-2015 08:35 PM

I'm so sorry about your friend, Terry... Hope the quilt is a big comfort to his wife. You can always make another one for yourself!

joe'smom 02-03-2015 07:24 AM

Terry, I'm very sorry to hear about your friend. I wish we could have seen that special quilt.

This is what my quilt will look like. It was so exciting to finally start putting pieces on the wall! I'm thrilled with it, even though I don't love the effect the heavier gold has on the pattern. I think the on-point black grid will still be obvious. I was going to make the 4-patch centers, to compare with these, but these seem to have good movement, so I think I will just proceed as is.

My shoulders slumped every time I thought of doing the full size, so my plan is to go with the 4x4. My sewing room is very small, so it was hard to get far enough away to get all of the blocks in the photo. Bottom photo shows the backing fabric I bought, which I'm not totally loving compared to others I've seen. I'm thinking I will piece something simple to bring in some pink and gold, so the effect isn't so overwhelmingly blue-green-y.

Great progress, Joe's Mom!

baronreads 02-03-2015 07:42 PM

I love your colors AND your back! Great job!

Emma S 02-04-2015 06:52 AM

JM: Great job, bet it feels good to see the pattern appear. Like your choice of backing. Part of the fun of viewing everyone's quilts is the choice of backing. Congrats on your progress!

thimblebug6000 02-04-2015 04:51 PM

Looking good everyone! joe'smom... I don't think you could find a more perfect backing fabric... it's lovely and draws in the checkerboard colours.

hi, finally got the last borders on and took a picture :-). Did the quarter size, and since I didn't have enough border units to go right round, so just added them top and bottom to lengthen the top just a tad. Quite pleased with the end result :D.

Siodach, love your celtic name. I think your quilt is lovely and love your idea of lengthening as I am doing the same size.

sewbizgirl 02-05-2015 05:45 AM

Siodach, yours turned out lovely!

It's fresh off the quilting frame. Used the pantograph "Field of Flowers" by Keryn Emerson Now to get it bound this afternoon (picked one of the aquas) after I take it to my long arm group to share. Almost there! :) Then it's off to it's new home in Iowa w/my Mom

QultingaddictUK 02-05-2015 09:22 AM

Joe'smom love your center your backing fabric is very pretty!

Siodach your turned our great too great idea about the border units so you did not have to make more.

Hopefully my longarm lady will have mine back to me on the 16th :)

joe'smom 02-05-2015 05:29 PM

Siodach, your quilt is both beautiful and interesting. I like all the unique touches you added.

Great job, auntjo! What a happy find that backing was.

quiltsRfun 02-08-2015 11:09 AM

How do you like my backing?

I found it on the sale table at Hancock Fabrics. The blue doesn't quite match but I think it's close enough. I've finished my blocks but the top is on hold right now due to a few more urgent projects.

Just the right colors for it!

QuiltsRFun ... I love the backing fabric, and I love the square-in-square you did for the center!! Makes me want to go back and re-do all my centers!

I agree and I think those square-in-square are a stroke of genius.

It's actually raw edge appliqué. I had done the centers plain pink, then saw a version with the square-in-square and decided to add the blue. The bright yellow in the 4-patches was too much for me. I also don't know if I'll use the green checked sashing. I like it in other quilts I've seen but not when I see mine on the design wall.

Wish I could take credit for that stroke of genius.

Here are two other options I found for backing at Joann. Any comments? Preferences? Thanks!

I love them both but I think the pirate one has more pizazz but it is who it is for would be the deciding factor!

Emma S 02-09-2015 06:48 AM

Julie: I like the owl one the best, I think the lighter background is more in keeping with the "feel" of the quilt. Whichever you choose both will work well, just my opinion.

Pam H 02-09-2015 12:08 PM

I'm not a huge fan of sculls so I would choose the owls. The colors of both match really well, though.

I love the owls! I'm not a big fan of 'Day of the Dead' stuff, tho the colors are a match.
