Thanks, OkSewGlad. The house blocks finish at 10 inches. I used 10x18 inch pieces of fabric and cut out 6 at a time. This is a Marti Michell pattern using her templates. It was a class assignment and one I resisted because I hadn't seen a houses quilt that I really liked but by the time I sewed the first 6 together, I was hooked. I had used the most horrible fabric that I had and the pattern transformed them into something I really liked. She suggests how to spread the colors out so the houses are pretty well balanced with the different prints. This is my second house quilt and I still used some pretty horrible prints in the darker houses but it all balances out.

I got my blocks all quilted and cropped to 9". It was so much fun quilting these separate little squares! I mainly STID, but did a design in the middle of the larger bigger squares. I like to take a photo and study it a little while to see if they look okay side by side. Got my sashing pieces cut and the 1 3/4" strips pressed in half. Can't wait to try the next step.

Great blocks, Jeanie! I agree it's fun to quilt the little squares.

Here is one row (front and back) of my QAYG Baby Quilt. I'm so excited about how easy this was, I just hope that they line up okay when I do the rows. I tried pinning the pieces, as Jenniky did, but I found it much easier to just put tiny dots of school glue along the edges and press it. This made it much easier to sew. I used my 1/4" foot for the edges, then changed to my SITD foot for machine sewing the final seam. I do not do hand stitching if I don't have to.

Hey you both might like to try this stitch Anael has done instead of SID. I use it all the time, but a little closer together on my smaller quilts. This is a serpentine stitch, also called 3 point zigzag set at a width and length of 2 on my Bernina.

Boston - Wow your stitches are lovely. If yaou want ta see how the wool quilts ya could buy a small piece & try a few stitches.
GG - I love both o' your quilts. Just stunnin'! OK - Thanks for postin' Anael's thread, her jelly roll race quilt is lovely! I just got back from Brady & had a busy weekend. The lake is so low that Islands are appearing ta pop up everywhere! |
Gardner, I love your projects! What pretties!
Jeanie, your blocks are turning out sooo pretty! Boston, I agree your stitches are great! Obviously the batting didn't keep you from producing a great product and since I usually only machine quilt anymore, I still use and love my warm and natural...or rather my warm and white. :) |
Hi everyone, I have been following your class, just waiting to get a few things done so I can be free to start these lessons.
I used fleece for the back of my great granddaughter's quilt and it turned out great. Plus it was so easy to quilt. The only problem I can see is that it is so warm. Certainly not a summer quilt! |
Gardnergal - Your quilts are beautiful. :) Great job  Your talent in quilting is very apparent in the quality of your workmanship.

JeanieG - Like you, I am hoping fervently that my rows line up with each other. I believe I am going to check them closely before I start pinning. If they are off a bit, I might slice off a smidgen.

Sorry Dublb, I cannot work with wool as I am allergic. That's okay though, I love the Warm and Natural. |

I finished my test of this process. I made 8 blocks pretty nondescript just to see if I could do this (fairly easily). My first 2 blocks were set wrong so I just changed the whole layout as wasn't worth ripping. So my test piece is not very pretty... I have a set of sun bonnet sue type blocks that are for a quilt for one of my DIL. I need a QAYG method to join them and was not happy with where I was headed. I believe this will work nicely so I am going to get those all squared up and ready to finish.

Well, I have six of the blocks put together. They look okay from a distance, but when you get a bit closer, you can see that they could have lined up a bit better. I hope my sister will not be too critical when she sees it.
|
Anne, no one will notice this unless they are an avid quilter! I think they are just fine, and it is your first time trying this. I have one more row to do and I'll have mine together too! I love your Christmas prints, so cute!

Anyone have the answer on how we can tell which side of the W & N is the scrim side, and whether we put that to the backing or towards the top of our quilt???
|
The quilts are all beautiful. I have a problem . I wanted to add more blocks to the center that we started in QAYG. My blocks were 9" square. So, I had smaller blocks and I have carefully measured each block to be 9" squares. I have done everything step by step as I first did. They have been quilted and the sashing has been added. Now when I try to align the sashings, the center blocks are smaller and the sashings do not match. What can I do? HELP, PLEASE!!!!!
|
Just a thought, did you abutt those blocks with the sashing sewed on top. I had trouble too until I realized that and it was much easier to get the sashings to line up. I don't know why I didn't realize that at first. I hope that helps.

Here are my examples of what I'm saying:
Abutt the two blocks. Put binding strip on right block right side to right side and sew down with 1/4" seam. Then roll your strip over to the left block and fold your seam in a 1/4" and you are ready to sew down the left side. Once you do this trim your strip even with the blocks. I do hope this helps, this is just how I do it. Charlottemarie |
Charlottemarie , thank you. There is a separation between the blocks. I used a decorative stitch to secure the sashing. I will have to see if I can use the seam ripper to take them apart.
|
FYI all...Hancocks of Paducha has a 20% off sale this labor day weekend. Joanne's also. A good time to stock up on batting. Dubib...several size of wool which looks like a good buy.
I also researched Hobb's batting and they are made in Waco, TX. They talk about scrim but don't mention which side should be up. |

Charlottemarie My goal is to have the next tutorial methods posted by the beginning of next week. At the same time I'm working on another QAYG method to get a good handle on it before sharing it. :) |
charlottemarie - I also am not quite understanding but my mind doesn't process information like it used to (part of the fibro).
ssnare - if there is a gap between the blocks, that means your sashing isn't tight enough. If your stitching a tight 1/4", it could cause this. I hope this makes sense. I went through this many times until I got it right. |
Hi Jenn, no I do one sashing at a time. After I fix the top sashing I turn it over and do the back. I do the same for the sashing on the back. Then when I finish a row that way, I do the strip the same way except then I have 4 or more blocks and it is just a longer strip that i am working with. I don't know if I did it right, but that is how I did my Halloween wallhanging a few days ago. I haven't got caught up enough with my boom to be back on this. I am going to finish it up and then I will be back online. I'm reading all the posts everyday to stay in touch.

VickiG, my thinking is different too. I may be doing this all wrong, but it just works for me. My husband says I am always on another planet. LOL
Ssnare, glad I could help out. I just have to do things the way I understand. This now is a whole different critter from the bigger borders but I think it will work on those too. |

Hi everyone...I'm back from Wisconsin...good trip...coming back was stressful (left a day early--didn't want to be stuck in Atlanta for a couple days with the hurricane coming). I have caught up on the reading & am impressed with the quilts posted...great job, everyone!
|
Everyone's quilts are looking great! I just now had some time to start quilting my blocks. I am using my Calendar BOM squares and got the Jan. and Feb. blocks quilted. Just some echo quilting and SITD. It is so much easier to quilt a block rather than the whole quilt at once! I am still not sure I understand how to do the sashing, but will go back through this tute when I am ready for that step. I will post pics as soon as I get my camera back.

Hello everyone.. I regret my absence from the board these couple of days It was necessary for me to focus all my attention on personal happenings. It's good now and other than several errands I have to attend to today I can refocus back on what I love doing Quilting  My dgs will be visiting with us for a couple of days while my dd and her hubby go to a concert out of town. Obviously sewing slows down to a crawl when there is a 3 year old toddler around. So Im shooting for Monday to be back on track. That gives everyone more time hopefully to finish up on what they are working on before I introduce the next tutorial.:thumbup:
|
'gads, better chain myself to the SINGER today.........sew much to do still
|
you do realize that Monday is Labour Day and you migth have your dgs around a little longer {giggle}
|
Jenni, take your time. We'll wait! :)

I finally finished the Transportation D9P QAYG project. Only a couple "design changes" - won't make those again - hopefully. But I really like how this turned out, so am going to start another D9P for a close friends daughter.
Have a great weekend everyone!!! |
Everose, that is terrific! The rich blue really sets it off. You did a wonderful job.
|
Everose - Wow!! Such a boy quilt. It came out wonderful!
|
Everose--I really like this quilt! The border/backing fabric works perfect, great movement.
|
Everose...a reversible quilt! That really turned out neat.
