Everose...a reversible quilt! That really turned out great.
|
I hope to get caught up soon. I've been out of town for a couple of weeks and will be back in a couple of days. Everyone is doing a super job. Hopefully, I will be able to post some pics soon. Before I left, I did manage to get 12 blocks together using Jenny's QAYG method...w/o any problems!
|
Everose, your quilt turned out so well! I love it! The rich blues with grays and prints are wonderful! Thank you for sharing with us! Gets me excited for sure!
|
Everose that quilt turned out great! I am so happy with this method. I can at last quilt. I quilted hearts on my rose blocks and it looks good. Now I'm going to attempt some larger blocks. No fear!
|
Jenniky, While straightening my quilt book shelves, I discovered I have Beth Donaldson's book "Block by Block", she uses a lot of the same techiques you have shared with us...funny I had forgotten I had this book..between your tutes and this book I should be able to complete a quilting using these methods... Thanks for your inspiration.

I've been following along with this thread to see what everyone is doing. All the blocks are wonderful.
Here's some information on how to tell which is the scrim side of Warm & Natural: http://www.warmcompany.com/faq.html |

Wow Jenniky, you just had a great weekend! All kinds of new things. Good for you, what fun!!!
|
Jenniky, Don't be racing around in that new car! Lead feet cause big tickets!~ LOL We have missed you, good to see you back. I am quilting on my Boom 7 blocks and I am so excited. First though I have to do a quilt for a paying customer, and I am using QAYG. It has simplified my life, I can't thank you enough!!

I have 12 blocks together using the QAYG method, which I have really enjoyed learning. Thanks again, Jenniky!:o

Surfergirl...great looking quilt!!! I like them all... Really can't wait to start my grandson's graduation T-shirt quilt using fleece on the back & no batting...but it will have to wait till Dec. Heading to N.C. in the a.m., will be there for 3 weeks; then have 6 craftshows the next 2 months. Things should slow down some after Xmas. Will hopefully have access to a computer so I can check in on more of the wondeerful quilts. And keep up with Jenniky...:)
|
Surfergirl, love the quilt. Colors really pop and the quilting - wow. I'm working on a "huge" quilt for daughter right now. Blocks are 16 1/2" and there are lots of them. Also working on a Christmas throw for me.
But at the moment I'm making salsa and my house smells so good I can't stand it. So will let it cool a little to "taste it" and then put it in jars. The garden is "producing" big time. My father is still in hospital. He will have a procedure tomorrow where they take a scope down into his lung/lungs to see what it looks like and also take samples. Then they will determine if everything is okay. He's UPSET because he's still in the hospital and because we found out he is there. Life.... |
Surfergirl, your quilt is so pretty. Great job on your sashing.
|
JeanieG and Charlottemarie - Yes, I had an awesome weekend and I promise no lead feet here. :D
Surfergirl - What a wonderful job on your QAYG project. Are you planning to add borders or are you going to bind it as is.? VickiM - Wow... sounds like you are going to be very very busy next four months. Make sure to take care of you and have a hot cup of herbal tea or glass of wine with your feet up and a fun quilting magazine along the way. :p Everose - My best thoughts are with you and your Dad, hopefully he will be able to return home soon. Fresh Salsa sounds yummy; I'll be right over with a bag of Tostidos. |
Surfergirl--what a pretty quilt! The quilting just finishes it off. A block at a time would be a great way for me to practice meandering...I'll have to keep that in mind for next time!

*** Teaser***Here are the first few pictures as a teaser for the next QAYG tutorial. :D
Step #1 I made four quilt block sandwiches using the same spray basting method as before. Step #2 I quilted the square and I also anchor stitched all the way around the blocks edges. Step #3 Trimmed and squared up the blocks evenly. There is your teaser... be back later with more. :D |
Love your quilt Surfergirl!
Jenniky, hmmm...let me guess...you're doing a halloween quilt perhaps? LOL! To be continued... :) |
Oh Jenniky, that would make a fabulous table runner! I just love that fabric!
|
Looking good SurferGirl.... Isn't it nice to know that as you put your blocks together, your quilt is getting closer and closer to being finished? And it's fun to see the back sides too. Love the nice contrast of your connecting strips.
I've been side-lined with a broken hot water tank (yuck) and had to empty a lot of my cutting room so nothing gets wet. Luckily my sewing machine is in a different room. Then today, I'm dealing with a major muscle spasm in my shoulder area from my fibro.... |

Ronda and JeanieG, Actually this QAYG project is a reversible holiday table topper. :)
Step #4 I cut two front sashings 5 inches wide by the center length of my squares. I then cut a third longer sashing strip 5 inches wide by 20 inches long. (You will need to adjust these measurements to fit your squares. Im using 9" Squares for my project. Step #5 I then cut my back sashing pieces 9 inches wide by the center length of my squares. I then cut a third longer back sashing strip 9 inches wide by 20 inches long. (You will need to adjust these measurements to fit your squares. The Christmas blue backside sashing is then folded and ironed in half as we did in the first project/  Click on my blog link in my signature to find the first project tutorial to refer back to. Just as we did with our first QAYG you are going to sew these wider sashing strips to your squares. Pinning them front and back and sewing all three sections together with one seam. The seam is always "1/4 inch with unless stated otherwise. Pictures of front and back sides pinned and ready for sewing. BBL with more. |
Jenniky, I have been working on my Stars Quilt while waiting for some fabric to come for my baby quilt border. I had a devil of a time trying to figure out what size the back sashing should be. The front was 2 1/2", and trial and error found that about 4 1/4" worked pretty well, but really should be a little larger. Is there a formula you found or that you have figured out that works for the back sashing? I'm sure this would help a lot of us.

Now Im ready to sew on the opposite blocks to the top sashing. Before sewing them together I trimmed and squared end edges. Then I went to the sewing machine and sewed right sides together the front of the yellow top sashing to the right side of the halloween top material. I then turned it over and laid the flap down making sure that the edge of the flap lined up with the front seam. More to follow in next post set. :) |

Once I am sure my sashing lines up accurately. I then measured the width from the edge of one seam of batting to the opposite. In this case it turned out to be an even 4 inches. I cut a 4 x 9 1/4 piece of batting giving my self a little more than necessary on the length to be trimmed later. Laying the batting in the sashing canal. I make sure there is no bunching of the batting. It needs to lay nicely in as if it were a puzzle piece. I then take large basting stitches down both sides to hold the batting from sliding. Now I place a very thin line of glue on the edge of my material to hold my flap in place. I seem to have not taken a picture sewing the seam. I used my open foot so that I could clearly see where I was sewing and I sewed from the front down the ditch line. When I turned it over I had a perfect machine seam.. Ah Ha... I must of done it right. :) :)More Steps to follow in the next post. |

With Blue as my top thread and Yellow in the Bobbin, I did a large meander around the poinsettia shapes on the bottom sashing. I made sure I didnt come to close or connect with the side seams. Once finshed I flip it over to admire the resulting design on the front sashing. Another view of the back sashing quilted. Front Panels Back Panels I will be using the previous steps to attach these two units together tomorrow with a long piece of vertical sashing. Now Im going to try and write out the mathematical formula I used to figure my sashing on paper. So I can answer JeanieG's question. :) BBL |
Awesome, Jenni! I never would have thought ta put the battin' in after the front sashin' was sewed on. It makes total sense.
The control valve went out on my hot water heater last night. DH is replacin' the whole hot water heater tanight. We will never buy a Whirlpool (sp?) again. This is the second one in 2 years. :( At least it didn't burst! :) |
Good grief dublb - what bad luck. I'm glad it didn't leak all over!

Jenniky - this is an interesting method but I think I'm a bit confused (my brain - not your instructions). Let me see if I understand .....
These connecting strips / sashing are wider than a typical sashing (say more than inch or so). Because of this, I need to "create" a quilt sandwich section. I attach the front sashing and the back sashing like the 1st method. Where I got confused -- is the back piece folded like the 1st method than stitched down? if so, is the folding really necessary? or can I just fold over a small section to create the finished edge. After that, I do the quilting on that small sashing section? I'll have to try this on a scrap and see if I'm understanding it but my brain just isn't processing it. That's the problem with fibro - it messes with the processing center of the brain. Learning something new is VERY hard but once I've learned it, I never forget. Weird, huh? |
dublib - sorry to hear of your heater issue. We are dealing with the same thing. Ours started leaking (apparently for a while) but didn't realize it until a couple days ago. Now, we're dealing with the moisture people, plumber, carpenter (to replace the rotted board (which is why we think it had been leaking a while), AND the insurance adjuster.
Feel for ya !! Wish hubby was still healthy (has severe COPD) so he could do the job and save us a ton of money. And, like you, we went through this 5 years ago this month. Thought we wouldn't have to deal with this problem so soon. |
Ok, I copied the instructions into Word so I can print out and keep in a binder. While going through it again, it made more sense. But I'm still curious about folding the back sashing piece in half and if it is really necessary.
I need to find one of those little glue bottles. |
Well, I have not worked on my sister's surprise in a couple of days, but it is better than half done and I have 3 months until Christmas so there is no problem. I have actually been making Christmas bags, and reading Nancy Drew. Since I am going through my second childhood, I figure I can get away with it.

Hello Ladies, I finished up the reversible table topper this morning. Hubby just finished cleaning the garage so we are going out for a late lunch. I will post the last part of the tutorial when I come back. Vicki in answer to your question. Yes you do not have to use a complete fold if you would like to save on material. The way I did it was based on the formula I am using to figure out my sashing size and its just a whole lot easier for me. I dont have to mess with perfecting my fold under seams.. Thats just me. :) Other than the basting I did everything on the machine. Including both sides of the binding. Here are the finished pictures... bbl after lunch with the tute.

Pin the front sashing onto the front side with right sides together. Pin the back folded sashing to the back side raw edges together. Then sew a 1/4" seam. Sew the second section to the front sashing only. right sides together. Measure your sashing ditch. As you did on the vertical sashings. Cut your batting piece to fit in the canal. Make sure there is no bunching and then baste down both sides of batting to keep it from sliding in the canal. Conclusion in the next post. |
Jenniky...I'm going to add borders...I want to learn that part, also. Thanks again!
|
Thanks, Vicki...Sorry you're having problems. I, also, have fibro and know how it feels. I've really enjoyed learning this QAYG method. I've just been so busy and have a lot to catch up on. Hope you feel better.

As we did with the vertical sashings we now run a thin line of glue to hold the back sashing flap in place while we flip it over and sew it closed from the front side sashing . Below is the finished front side and Back side of the Topper. Formula for figuring your front and back sashings. (This is only if you are using the folding method. ) [ Final width of Sashing ] + [ 1/2"] = Width of top Sashing. [ Final width of Top Sashing * 2 ] + [ 3/4"] = Width to cut back Sashing. |
